Rosé wine is awful.

Please give your opinions, all welcome...

I've yet to find a Rosé wine that doesn't give me an instant dull headache, tried lots of different blends/price points and still believe that it tasted just crap.

It is a decisive opinion I know, but AIBU if I've tried so many over the years and STILL get an instant headache after one sip(slurp)?

I am soo not a wine snob, drink most red and white, regions/price and blends irrespective.

Whispering Angel Provence Rose but £££.
The Pink - Waitrose - £11.
Esprit De Burgunay - Waitrose - delicious. Usually £13 but on special offer for £9 sometimes.
Cote Du Varois - M and S £11 but Aldi also do a very nice Cote Varois for £6.49.

All from the Provence region of France and unlikely to get a decent bottle for under £10 although the Aldi one is mikes better than others at the same price point.

I've also had really nice roses from the Basque region of Spain.

I agree with a pp that people need to widen their tastes. Roses don't quite offer the variety and range of reds and whites but there are some amazing bottles out there and a cold, good rose is perfect for summer entertaining. I'm lucky to live in London where even a bog standard pub offers a decent Provence rose these days. Unfortunately there are still too many places around the country that only offer horrible stuff like Zinfandels or Mateus (shudder).

@justasking111 might have to try that one

ronconcoke · 10/08/2021 23:16

Love rosé! But it has to be drunk ice-cold, on a boiling hot day, it has to be pale and it has to be from Provence. Grin

This is my favourite rosé. I thought I didn't like rosé either but got this in a mixed case and have been converted.

Ah well, OP, happy to leave you in ignorance of my favourite wine, a rosé that is one of the great wines of France. They don’t export it much and for that reason it’s expensive and only available from very good wine merchants.

middleager · 10/08/2021 23:34

In laws came over with a bottle of wine - Mateus Rose. I dread them bringing wine as the love the stuff i hate - Riesling, Black Tower, Blue Nun. It's an 80s fest basically.

I didn't know what Mateus Rose was. They brought the bottle over, said they'd kept this wine for 10 years for a "special occasion". I thought, finally a nice wine.

DH poured it out. Tasted like cough syrup. Looked like Devil's piss. That's when I discovered it was a Rose - about a decade past its shelf life.

shellstarbarley · 10/08/2021 23:34

Any cote de provence is good and also love the kylie one. Oriel is another good both usually £9 a bottle but can get them for £7 sometimes. I agree the darker roses are vile but the pale ones are lovely.

bleachblondemom · 10/08/2021 23:36

@middleager Jesus Christ black tower 😂 I used to drink that… why oh why 😂

FrankButchersDickieBow · 10/08/2021 23:44

The nicest rose I have ever had is a sauvignon blanc rose.

Fiveletters · 10/08/2021 23:48

Aldi’s Fleurs de Prairie Côtes de Provence that someone else mentioned is lovely. I’m so happy when it’s in stock, DH knows to stock up whenever he sees it!

I tried the 19 crimes rosé at the weekend - was very pleasantly surprised.

10 years ago I thought Gallo or Blossom Hill were the only types of rosé - god we drank so much of that stuff!!

Summerbreeze4 · 10/08/2021 23:53

@ShrikeAttack

On a hot day only a very chilled rosè will do! Try this if you think you don't like it, dry, delicious, full of summer fruit flavours and low acidity. Perfect for hot days in the garden.
This gets my vote too!
Summerbreeze4 · 10/08/2021 23:57

Sorry can’t copy the pic!

mrsnoodle55 · 10/08/2021 23:59

I have a tendency to drink far too much wine, which I know, and recognise it as something that I am addressing. But even I can’t drink rose.

My Mum hardly ever drinks but on the rare occasion she does, it‘s got to be one small glass of Blossom Hill White Zinfandel. I literally cannot drink this, it tastes to me like gone off vimto mixed with artificial sweeteners and battery acid.

I wonder what others taste as to me it’s gut renchingly awful?

Summerbreeze4 · 11/08/2021 00:01

@PotteringAlong where do you buy that one from please and cost?

Dasher789 · 11/08/2021 00:33

Agreed, hate Rose

dreamingbohemian · 11/08/2021 00:38

OP if you've tried some really pale dry rosés from Provence and hated them, then yes you can give up on rose

If not there's your answer!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/08/2021 00:42

Some rose is awful, some is absolutely lovely.
I'm just having a happy memory of my last holiday as a 19yo in the Loire valley, we brought back some gorgeous rose. The smell and taste of summer.Smile

So YANBU OP.

Welshmaenad · 11/08/2021 00:44

Asda's Extra Special Cotes De Provence is LOVELY.

lotstolose1 · 11/08/2021 00:46

All wine is awful Envy

5foot5 · 11/08/2021 00:47

Well it is context sensitive isn't it. In the South of France under a clear blue sky it is perfect.
I find the same is true of pastis. Lovely on holiday in France (ah me, when will that be) but a bit bleh back home

Wingedharpy · 11/08/2021 00:52

@middleager : please send your IL's to me. I think I'd get on well with them.
I know zilch about wine but I know what I like the taste of, and none of it would come under "crisp and dry".Wink
