To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now

It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

We've just returned from a fabulous week in Northumberland and it's currently sunny in Yorkshire and the forecast is good for the rest of the week.

The weather is unpredictable in the UK, we all know that- don't plan for good weather as you might be disappointed, plan for rain and you will be really pleased if it's then nice! Holidays don't need to be about sunshine!

SouthernMamma · 10/08/2021 18:27

Yeah it can be miserable but we've had 2 great days on the beach this week so far in Cornwall and it's made up for the less good days. Just be prepared for the lack of staffing when eating out!

Dobbyafreeelf · 10/08/2021 18:27

YABU I don't feel sorry for anyone who has the luxury of going on holiday. Some of us have worked flat out in essential roles keeping the country running and still cannot afford to take time off let alone have a holiday!

SouthernMamma · 10/08/2021 18:28

No quarantine in U.K. tho!

NanooCov · 10/08/2021 18:29

We've been away from home in Scotland since 26th July (mix of visiting my family on east coast and are currently in Aviemore for a couple of nights and it's not stopped us doing anything we wanted to do.

Zotter · 10/08/2021 18:29

@ArabellaScott

I mean, aim for the East Coast if you want to get the best chance of dry weather. It's a bit colder, but less wet.
Whenever I look at the weather map Norfolk and Suffolk seem to have the most warm days.
pinkstripeycat · 10/08/2021 18:31

Nah suck it up. Lots of us having been going on uk holidays for years and the weather is all part of the fun

Mesoavocado · 10/08/2021 18:31

Ha just spent a week in East Neuk of Fife and was glorious weather. Days out on the beach, great food and drink plus time with family. Had an amazing holiday

Plumtree391 · 10/08/2021 18:34

We enjoyed many good family holidays there too, Zotter and Arabella. I love East Anglia, so much is unspoiled and as well as the beaches, there are many interesting nooks and crannies. I feel quite nostalgic thinking about it.

notoldjustpastyoung · 10/08/2021 18:39

The answer is go out and enjoy getting wet. Especially with children, how many puddles can they jump in. One of my good memories of a holiday in Bridport I think it was - on holiday with partner and 4 children.
Driving slowly down the little road to the beach we couldn't understand why all the cars were leaving the other way. When we got down there, a non commercial beach, lovely, there was a sandstorm, with waves crashing, sand blasting and wind blowing. Chidlren didn't want to know but I stripped and went to the edge of the sea, and let the waves and the sand do the worst. It was the most exhilarating thrill ever. Some countries are TOO hot, and some are not the warmest like ours, but there's always fun to be had. If we live in England we surely should be able to adapt to the weather.

Anjo2011 · 10/08/2021 18:40

Norfolk coast is normally pretty decent , it’s never that cold but I totally I understand how the weather can make or break a holiday.

SnacksRLife · 10/08/2021 18:41

Depends what you want to do on your holiday I suppose. All I want to do is relax with my family, not so much, eat some nice food and maybe go out for a meal or two. Depends what you've booked also. We are going to Cornwall in 5 weeks and have a house with a pool and games room booked.

Xenia · 10/08/2021 18:47

It can still be a nice change for people. I remember a very very very wet summer holiday in a rather primitive Scottish cottage near Stoer, Lochinver with my parents in my teens (when I also had a really nasty flu or other germ) and tried to learn Gaelic from a book in the cottage. Even so I am glad we went and have fond memories of the beautiful lochs and beaches but not the midges.

ancientgran · 10/08/2021 18:48

I'm in South Devon, it is lovely here this evening. I've got a fan on as it's too hot for me.

loopylindi · 10/08/2021 18:49

Here in the south west we have wall to wall tourists and it's lovely. Yes we've had a couple of cloudy days of late but generally, being on the coast we have micro-climates so we don't always get the rain that is forecast for the rest of the county.

People who live in Juneau (Alaska's capital) call rain 'liquid sunshine' and they mean it!!! It's so wet there, if you stand still you grow moss.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/08/2021 18:49

Touch wood, dd and family plus friends are having good weather camping near the Dorset coast. Sent some stunning beach pics today - you could easily mistake it for the Caribbean! 🤞it lasts. Gdcs are having a lovely time.

Amillionnc · 10/08/2021 18:51

@PuppyMonkey

No such thing as bad weather just poor clothing choices as they say.
What’s the appropriate clothing for gale winds and extremely heavy rain??
speakout · 10/08/2021 18:52

Sounds like my world 24/7. I live surrounded by woodland, near unspoilt coastline. Mountains within a short drive, city centre 20 minutes away.
I have had a number of cabin/woodland holidays, but I live in muddy puddle land.
Give me Kos anyday.

fussyhousewife · 10/08/2021 18:52

My son and his family are currently in Wales. They do not care what the weather - they are getting a break and as he said "holidays are what you make of them"

Shamoo · 10/08/2021 18:53

In Cornwall and had a lovely day on the beach today! It’s been decent overall 😀

Karenaki · 10/08/2021 18:56

We arrived at Butlins in Bognor yesterday. Not had a drop of rain yet, and forecast good for the week. But yes, I feel for the people who were here last week!

Boredmotherofone · 10/08/2021 18:57

It's been glorious here in North Yorkshire for months! I think we've had ONE day of rain in about 3 months and even that day it brightened up later on and the skies turned blue again. I'm looking at the sky now and there's not a cloud to be seen. Builders over the rod are topless which is as good a sign as any!

Buttercup1954 · 10/08/2021 19:00

It's not been wall to wall rain in Scotland. I live there. Maybe some parts. Will depend where you were going.

youlookingatme · 10/08/2021 19:05

We had years of camping holidays in the UK, some sunny some wet. One year everything in the tent got wet we spent all day at the launderette washing and drying everything including the sleeping bags. But funnily enough this was the holiday we all look back on as one of our best UK holidays as we had to find things to do. We spent another wet camping holiday in Switzerland, that really was challenging as there was nothing at all to do. At least we cater for bad weather over here.
