It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

I think I would have quite liked it pre-DC. I always sleep better to the sound of rain and the idea of being curled up on the sofa - and someone else’s sofa to boot! - with wine and a film while it chucks it down outside is quite appealing. I don’t mind the rain really and will happily dash outside to the shops mid downpour anyway.
With young DC I think the novelty of being in a different home would have worn off after a day or two.

Oh give over....people who bang on about the weather in the UK during the summer drive me bonkers! It's raining. It's sunny. It's raining again. It's what we do. You'd think that, after the last 18 months of pretty much all small & local businesses taking a massive hit, people would want to get out and support them just a smidge. Change your plans...do indoor stuff when its raining. Do outdoor stuff when it's not.

Boredmotherofone · 10/08/2021 19:06

Glorious sunshine here!! So anyone due to visit North Yorkshire needn't give up hope yet!

@youlookingatme

We had years of camping holidays in the UK, some sunny some wet. One year everything in the tent got wet we spent all day at the launderette washing and drying everything including the sleeping bags. But funnily enough this was the holiday we all look back on as one of our best UK holidays as we had to find things to do. We spent another wet camping holiday in Switzerland, that really was challenging as there was nothing at all to do. At least we cater for bad weather over here.
That’s lovely. I remember vividly being caught in the heaviest downpour I can ever remember with DH (before he was DH) while we were supposed to be in the middle of a long walk and I don’t think I’d remember the walk even half as fondly were it not for that, scary as it kind of was at the time.

Anyway, what I wanted to ask was - what happens to the the tent for it to get wet inside? Does it eventually soak through or is it up through the floor?

Echobelly · 10/08/2021 19:11

It looks like it'll be the usual 'meh' camping weather when we go soon, the same weather we almost always have for it - 19-20C, cloudy, chance of showers. So not hot enough to break out the really summery clothes, not dry enough that you don't have to take with all the rain things just in case. Still at least camping's just 3 nights, then we're at an airbnb. Shame that the main things to do are coastal (all the English Heritage etc is wrong side of county) as paddling/being on beaches needs to be 23C+ really, or else you just get a bit damp and chilly. Ho hum.

AppleKatie · 10/08/2021 19:12

Just come back from a fab British week away. Mostly it was dry and warm a couple of days it was a bit showery (ok full disclosure on one of those days those showers were heavy- but even then it wasn’t cold).

We just did fun museums when it rained and made the most of the sunshine. It didn’t spoil the holiday at all- if your enjoyment of a holiday entirely rests on blue skies and sunshine you are always going to be disappointed in the U.K.

TooTrusting · 10/08/2021 19:15

Another one here from Gower. We were forecast mostly rain this week but it's been much better than predicted. Today was glorious. I have made an air bnb in my annex and so far nobody has had all rainy days. There's loads to do in the not so great weather and I have it all in my info pack to help guests with ideas and am happy to lend board games.
I was amazed when I did my research how much there is to do around here, it's really opened my eyes.

Coyoacan · 10/08/2021 19:15

If it's any consolation, it's lashing here in Mexico.

AppleKatie · 10/08/2021 19:15

what happens to the the tent for it to get wet inside?

8/10 user error. (Leaving door open/leaving kit against the side, leaning against the side in rain or the tent is poorly pitched with no gap between the inner and outer tents)

1/10 the tent is ripped/needs rewaterproofing.

1/10 heavy sideways rain and high winds on a tent not designed for such conditions.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 10/08/2021 19:16

Most recent holiday I had that was memorable mostly for its shit weather, was near Limoges in late July/August. So cold that we had to go to Decathlon and buy more long sleeved items and some jumpers.

Lovemusic33 · 10/08/2021 19:17

We always holiday in the uk, some of us can’t afford to go abroad. We have had some lovely sunny holidays and some really wet holidays but we make the most of what’s available where ever we are staying.

It seems most people head to Cornwall or Devon expecting nice days out on the lovely beaches (and they are lovely) but they don’t research ‘things to do when it rains’ and tbh there’s not much to do in Cornwall when the weather is bad. I’m lucky I love in the SW so when the weather is nice we can be at the beach in less than a hour. So we now holiday in non sea side destinations, there’s less people and there’s more to do when the weather isn’t great. Yes it can be a bit annoying if it rains all week but it’s not the end of the world. The weather in the uk has been pretty awful this year but it’s not like that every year. We are off to north Wales in a couple weeks and will be packing for all weather conditions but hoping for some sun.

TwitterTwatterofTinyMinds · 10/08/2021 19:18

Just had the most glorious day walking the North Norfolk coastline. No need to feel sorry for us!

We've had rainy days, sunny days, and days with both and lots of weather in between. It hasn't stopped us getting out, having fun and spending time together with family and friends.

If the weather puts some people off so the places we visit are quieter, all the better!

VinceBitMe · 10/08/2021 19:22

It’s gorgeous and sunny here in Pembrokeshire where I live 😍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿☀️

Bertiebiscuit · 10/08/2021 19:24

It's been beyond vile in London - wet, cold, windy, beyond depressing - I feel so sorry for people trying to holiday here with kids or even trying to have a nice day out - YANBU -

SimonJT · 10/08/2021 19:24

We’re in the cairngorms at the minute, its lovely, we’ve been out walking today and had a picnic in the woods. We’ve walked so far my husband is having a danger nap right now.

The weather has been brilliant, nice, but cool enough not to get hot or uncomfortable, we were going to try the hot tub out tonight, but I think it might be too hot for it.

appyday · 10/08/2021 19:24

On holiday in Kent, days out all over, rain forecast but been a no show where we have been, and a fair amount of sunshine. Having a fantastic week, thanks.

Muncher75 · 10/08/2021 19:32

Absolutely gorgeous weather here in Cornwall this week!

welshbaby2009 · 10/08/2021 19:40

We will be going camping come what may with the weather. We have learnt to deal with it and enjoy what we can.
Slight issue this year as husband hadn’t realised the lack of facilities at our campsite! We have compost toilets and a shed for a shop. I hadn’t realised until I went to book some sessions in the pool...... that doesn’t exist!!! Wish us luck x

Morgysmum · 10/08/2021 19:46

It is tough holiday in the UK,
We had a holiday in the Lake District, however the weather was awful, blowing a gale, for about 3 days and a driving rain. We had rain gear with us, but these got soaked through on the trio from the car to the apartment, the weather was that shocking.
We did do stuff, but it was all indoors, being the school holidays, ment been charged eye watering prices. We didn't get to see much of views, as you couldn't see the top of the hills due to the driving rain. We got a bit a day with out rain, but only a couple, before the holiday ended. It was October, but only a short while layer, the area got badly flooded, it didn't seem to have dried out since we visited. Let's just say we have had more wet holidays than dry. We were saving for a holiday abroad, before covid hit, but our savings got blitzed, so we definitely cannot go this year, which I think is a good thing, as I have heard of some eye watering prices, even to camp in a tent.

@Ifeelsuchafool

I feel sorry for people who can't seem to have fun unless they have perfect weather. [Hmm] I haven't been abroad for more than 10 years. I want the world to still be here for my grandchildren's grandchildren. I stay local, I eat locally produced food as much as possible. I don't want gas guzzling aeroplanes to ferry me around or ferry my dinner in. I do my best to focus on what I have, not on what I have not. The furthest I'm going this year is around 250 miles in the UK to see my new born granddaughter. I don't understand people who will moan one minute about climate change and the next minute board an aeroplane for no other reason than pure pleasure. Rant over.
Oh seriously. Sorry Mrs perfect but some of us NEED the sunshine. Maybe the world will still be here for your grandchildren a grandchildren but with your outlook they'll all be bored shitless and mentally scarred from being berated for damaging the planet continuously.

Some of us need a bit of what makes us happy to actually you know, live.

Spanglybangles · 10/08/2021 19:53

We have just come back from the Western Isles and the weather was amazing. Luskentyre beach at the weekend was blazing sunshine and 23c. We went expecting rain all week, but was the total opposite. As soon as we got back to the mainland though, the rain started. Usually the other way round out there!!

Currently Motor homing in the New Forest watching the sun go down with a bottle of Chianti, absolutely blissful

hels71 · 10/08/2021 19:55

We are in Yorkshire and have spent the last two days in the beach. The weather is great! When it rains we put in waterproofs an d walk

TiddleTaddleTat · 10/08/2021 19:55

On a U.K. break here. Rain but intermittent and not cold, thankfully. We've done camping in torrential rain/storms and ended up going home halfway through before. It's a lot harder work than being somewhere with guaranteed sunshine. Covid makes it harder, when you don't want to be rammed indoors with loads of others due to poor weather.
