I live in a rural location which is very popular with walkers / bikers / horse riders etc. It's heaving today for some unknown reason as the weather is rubbish!

We have 2 driveways. One which was with the original cottage then a small bit of garden then a second which leads to the additional land we have. The second driveway the forestry commission have a ROW over as the track continues up into the forest. Next to that driveway is a footpath. Both driveways have gates at either end and both say private property/dogs running loose. (Diagram attached - not to scale!)

I have just had a straw delivery and so opened the second driveway gates to let the farmer in and trundled round the back to show him where to put them. He's unloaded and driven off and I've gone to lock the gates back up. Literally as he's driven off and I'm walking down a guy has pulled in the gates and parked up and 3 kids have jumped out and he started unloading their bikes.

I politely ask him to move as he's on private land and he says there are no signs he thought it was a parking spot. I say they are on the gate and it's clearly an enclosed piece of land that is not a parking space and he says he couldn't see them as the gates were open but he'll only be a few minutes. No problem, I say, I'll pop back and shut the gates in 5. Off I toddle.

I have returned and his car is still there and he has gone. He has left a note on the windscreen which says "had to park here no other spaces". I mean WTF?!

WIBU to shut the gates, padlock the fucker in, block the gates with my truck AND then disappear for at least 48 hours?

Yeah @PegasusReturns I totally agree - talk about adding salt to the wound! What a tit...

rosamacrose · 31/07/2021 15:17
@itsgettingwierd that would be perfect
Would certainly be great to have a conclusion before a tabloid picks up the thread and it disappears.
Been following since the start Op!
I think he's less brazen than a fool who is way out of his depth, now and hasn't a clue how to resolve his problem Grin
He has to deal with this at some point... the children will need their tea.
The thread gallops ahead so fast, though, that by the time I've typed this.... it could all have changed.

How lovely to have access to a forest track Smile

It's worth making sure you're not breaking the law by wilfully denying him access to his car. If he's a knob (well clearly he is) it may be that he'll call the police. The article below implies you're ok because there was a barrier in place (gate).

<a class="break-all" href="//actualwww.landlordsguild.com/private-land-car-parking-and-the-protection-of-freedoms-act-2012/ly" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">legal stuff

Nevertheless I'd probably enjoy watching his discomfort but leave a note with your number on his car just to put you in the righter than right side of the law and then take a veeeerrryy long 5 minutes to come back from your carvery important business to release him perhaps today maybe tomorrow.

Summersun2020 · 31/07/2021 15:18

Ha! Loving this. Cheeky sod. Don’t back down OP!

LakieLady · 31/07/2021 15:19

@DepressedDD

Do you think he realises the gate is locked? Maybe he’s just seen the truck blocking the way and hasn’t investigated further? He’s probably thinking some cheeky fucker has blocked that woman’s gate and is hoping the other motorist (who has probably gone cycling) comes back and moves their truck soon. 😂😂
Good point, @DepressedDD, it might be amusing to move the truck, so CF thinks "Great, we can get the car out now" only to find that he can't.

Those kids must be getting bored with cycling around by now.

atlastifoundit · 31/07/2021 15:19

@Ghosttile

I wonder if he’d have stayed parked if a man had told him to shift the car? Entitled bike fucker.
Yeah, if the OP had been a 6'6" burly farmer with hands like shovels saying "Gerroff my land!!", I dare say he would have parked elsewhere.
CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 31/07/2021 15:23

I love that he’s trying to brazen it out, overlooking the fact that you live there and can keep the gate shut all weekend if it strikes your fancy! What an entitled idiot.

FrippEnos · 31/07/2021 15:24

@HaveringWavering

It doesn't, the OP has a working stable and could quite easily have had something that needed to be taken to the stables from the truck.

But the truck could be parked on her other drive once unloaded.

I realise that this is entirely hypothetical but why should she bother?
Knittedfairies · 31/07/2021 15:25

Sadly I don't think the Forestry Commission guys are going to need access to the track today...

BlueEyesWhiteDragon · 31/07/2021 15:28

I'm just feeling a bit sorry for his poor kids and am tempted to just open the gates. They must either be knackered or indeed elite athletes. I suppose they could have gone to the illegal bike jump bit and just be hanging around there rather than continuously cycling round the forest but even so ....

I'm rubbish at estimating ages so the kids could be anything between 8 and late teens but still not any id want trapped outside if the weather turns because they can't get home.

Currently it's dry but quite blustery and there is some spectacular dark clouds hovering overhead.

@Resilience would it be the rural crime team that they sent out (who usually covers us with patrols) or some random one from the nearest station? Id be less worried about the rural team coming as I know them but id be a bit worried about a random one.

The solution is go out in my truck and if the police are called point out I couldn't leave it unlocked as have no way to know when / if he moved and would leave it unsecured and invalidate my insurance. What's on at the cinema 🤔

Leave a note with your contact details. He’ll pluck up courage to ring you and be totally relieved that you are so lovely about it, when you say you’ll only be 5 minutes…

How long was his 5 minutes?

Staffholidayclubrep · 31/07/2021 15:28

@atlastifoundit precisely not only he is a CF he is probably misogynistic as well. If it was a burly farmer shouting 'jog on pal' he would have moved but thought that a little lady would be a pushover.

What, all those strong agile men with their hard hats and axes and chainsaws and all...?

What a pity!

RandomMess · 31/07/2021 15:30

Seriously it's on him.

They have been back twice and neither time come and apologised and tried to resolve it. Why do you feel guilty exactly? Social conditioning?

Don't open the gates, OP! The only person to blame if they get caught in rain is their dickhead father. He could easily have sorted this if he'd a) moved when you asked him, or b)come nnovling on your door, which he's clearly avoiding. I bet he will knock if it rains, they will only get a bit wet.
Dollywilde · 31/07/2021 15:30

I really wouldn’t be opening the gate without him asking because of the insurance point.

If the kids are suffering it’s because he’s too much of a stubborn dickhead to knock on your door, and that’s entirely on him.

Dollywilde · 31/07/2021 15:31

X post with Random and Karl making the same point Grin

seconddateshithead · 31/07/2021 15:31

Think of it as doing the kids a favour. Otherwise they'll grow up learning they too like their dad can be utter selfish arses. At least this way they learn much younger and maybe there's some hope for them

I speak as someone who's just come back from a major tourist attraction where the level of cf from parents being passed down to their children was astronomical...

movingstars · 31/07/2021 15:31

I understood that trespassing is now illegal? You pointed out this is private property and he ignored and his note demonstrates wilful disregard. I would be tempted to call the police myself never mind wait for him to call them.

And don't feel sorry for the children - this is a valuable life lesson for them. Hopefully they will grown up knowing such entitled behaviour is unacceptable.

Kipperandarthur · 31/07/2021 15:32

I agree don’t unlock the gates. All he has to do is return and knock on your door but so far he is refusing to do so. He’s the one stupidly wrong and turning the day into Tour de Forest not you.

LakieLady · 31/07/2021 15:32

Quite!

Don't unlock the gate, OP.

dapsnotplimsolls · 31/07/2021 15:33

If it starts raining, they can climb the gate and sit in the car.

paddlingon · 31/07/2021 15:33

You aren't responsible for his kids OP, he is.
He needs to grow up, knock on your door, apologize and ask you to move your car and open your gate.

You are actually helping the dc because they will learning the valuable life lesson that being an entitled dick will sometimes bite you on the arse.

They are less likely to behave like this as adults and will have an easier time with more people liking them as a result.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 31/07/2021 15:34

Don't weaken, OP! You can't anyway, because of the insurance.

Getting your brother to answer the door is a great idea. He could offer to try to phone the horsey lady & ask her to come over, & then you could take your time before appearing from somewhere out of sight as though you've come from somewhere miles away.
