To lock the jackass in (parking thread)

I live in a rural location which is very popular with walkers / bikers / horse riders etc. It's heaving today for some unknown reason as the weather is rubbish!

We have 2 driveways. One which was with the original cottage then a small bit of garden then a second which leads to the additional land we have. The second driveway the forestry commission have a ROW over as the track continues up into the forest. Next to that driveway is a footpath. Both driveways have gates at either end and both say private property/dogs running loose. (Diagram attached - not to scale!)

I have just had a straw delivery and so opened the second driveway gates to let the farmer in and trundled round the back to show him where to put them. He's unloaded and driven off and I've gone to lock the gates back up. Literally as he's driven off and I'm walking down a guy has pulled in the gates and parked up and 3 kids have jumped out and he started unloading their bikes.

I politely ask him to move as he's on private land and he says there are no signs he thought it was a parking spot. I say they are on the gate and it's clearly an enclosed piece of land that is not a parking space and he says he couldn't see them as the gates were open but he'll only be a few minutes. No problem, I say, I'll pop back and shut the gates in 5. Off I toddle.

I have returned and his car is still there and he has gone. He has left a note on the windscreen which says "had to park here no other spaces". I mean WTF?!

WIBU to shut the gates, padlock the fucker in, block the gates with my truck AND then disappear for at least 48 hours?

Shame the OP’s had to leave to catch her holiday flight, isn’t it?

He has no idea of the situation. He forfeited any rights to reasonableness when he chose to leave the car there when he knew it was a private garden and he had no right to be there.

SixesAndEights · 31/07/2021 13:21

If you do have cctv then yes I'd fuck off for the day. If you don't have cctv I'd worry that he'd cause criminal damage, not just to your gates, if he realises there's no one about.

I still wouldn't actually let him out though. And since he's now gone off again then I'd increase the time you keep him shut in.

Jocasta2018 · 31/07/2021 13:21

This is presuming the OP to be a woman but I wonder if the CF parking prat would've left his car there if he'd been accosted by a man....
I don't know why but I have a feeling he would've parked elsewhere.

Bigtruth · 31/07/2021 13:21

I think you should stream your security cameras so we can all watch along.

Can we petition Mumsnet HQ for this functionality to be added but in the meantime get it up on YouTube live or something?

TSSDNCOP · 31/07/2021 13:21

So he's even egged one of the kids on to jump the closed gate?

Absolutely time to go for a looooooong walk.

NowWeAreSuckingDieselFella · 31/07/2021 13:22

Can you go out and turn your truck so it's facing the other way?

TokyoSushi · 31/07/2021 13:23

Well done OP. No mixed feelings here either, she (I assume) is totally in control, keep the gate locked, have a confrontation with the car owner and make her point. Or open the gate, the CF will likely just drive off, but he's been inconvenienced sufficiently that he'll likely think twice about parking like that again.

FenceSplinters · 31/07/2021 13:23

Can you put the dogs where his car is?

emwithme · 31/07/2021 13:23

Oooh yes, this.

Of course we are - it's a parking thread!
viques · 31/07/2021 13:23

Well if he didn’t see your private land no parking sign. You didn’t see his car.

You should both go to spec savers!!!!!! Grin

Can you go out and turn your truck so it's facing the other way?
Yes! Make him think he's missed an opportunity to leave whilst you've been out!
Puzzledandpissedoff · 31/07/2021 13:25

Obviously cycled off to buy you flowers and chocolates by way of apology for being massive twats, do we think????

It's not even my driveway, but it would make my day if someone did that

And pigs might fly ...

This man was politely told that he was parked on private land and that he'd need to move. He said he'd just be a few minutes so the OP kindly said she'd pop back in 5 to lock her gates.

He stayed for well over an hour and left an entitled little not saying he had to park there, on private land, as there was no where else. Despite there being other places.

He is an entitled arse who won't learn if people* let h8m get away with it.

  • by people I mean women because I bet he would have moved it if a man had told him it was private land.

that wouldn't be kind to the dogs
custardbear · 31/07/2021 13:25

bloody entitlement of the CF's

Tbf not locking the gate wasn't an option. I've got loads of really expensive stuff up in the yard my insurance stipulates it must be behind locker barriers. The tack is in a locked tack room obviously but the quads and plant are just parked up and the gate is the locked barrier. I do usually park behind it overnight or if we are out because during lockdown we actually had some yobs smash through the gate. Luckily they had just been joyriding through the forest in the snow and hadn't stolen anything but my god the feelings when I heard the kerfuffle and went out and thought we'd been robbed are not something I want to repeat.

fundamentally, the car parked there was never an actual inconvenience to her

Yes it was. She needed to shut and lock her gates.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 31/07/2021 13:27

I think it’s more CFery as well, he’s hoping you’ll crack.

Entitled people often make the mistake of assuming that everybody else views them as importantly as they view themselves. We don't know for sure, but he might be hoping to ramp up the severity of the 'crime' that OP has 'committed' against him, so that she will feel terrible when she realises just how much her actions have inconvenienced him for an extended time.

If he pulls that one, it is OP's civic duty to do her very best slack-jawed Lauren Cooper impression. "Is it that you is unable to understand what a private drive is, though? Even when you has been educated by a smart person? Does you know what five minutes is, right? Did your mum never teach you to tell the time, though? Does you even know what a clock is? Look at my face? Am I bovvered....?"

lastcall · 31/07/2021 13:28

shame you can't find out where he lives via his reg plates and go park a tractor on his drive ... say you thought you were trading parking spaces for the week.

atlastifoundit · 31/07/2021 13:29

Go and put a note under the windscreen wiper on the truck saying 'Private Property No Parking' and when he comes back say "Whose truck is that?".

Billybagpuss · 31/07/2021 13:29

@yeOldeTrout

I've got mixed feelings about this thread.

I agree parker was unreasonable, I know OP can validly do all she's done, but fundamentally, the car parked there was never an actual inconvenience to her. Moreover, OP now has the huge inconvenience of how does she want to get out of this situation. Sounds like OP is trapped in her home.

Fun fantasy but reality of execution not so appealing.

Of course he’s inconvenienced OP she needs to secure her land, she’s just had a hay delivery, further in she may have livestock and I’m sure she is not in the habit of leaving the gate unlocked. Not least as it allows access to illegal campers which can cause no end of damage.

Your comment should have ended at your first comma.

The CF was unreasonable and therefore has to deal with the consequence of their actions.

Regardless of whether the car is an inconvenience to the OP or not, the CF was told he was on private property, given 5 minutes grace to pack up and fuck off and instead he totally ignored the OP.

The OP doesn't have any inconvenience nor js she trapped in her home - she can continue about her day as she chooses. She has no obligation to make herself available to the CF, it is his responsibility to make contact with the OP and arrange to remove his car when is convenient for her, not himself. He got himself into the situation so it is his problem to address.

The gate is locked so her property is secure, she has cameras just in case the CF tries to cause damage and she has his car details (make/model/reg) to pass on to the police if he does cause damage and she needs to get the police to trace him.

billy1966 · 31/07/2021 13:30

I think it’s more CFery as well, he’s hoping you’ll crack. Go out now, for several hours. Leave a note saying there is CCTV and you wont hesitate to call the police if needed.
Take a photo of his reg.

Head out.

Any damage will be down to him.

bluejeansredshirt · 31/07/2021 13:31

Please stand your ground and don't move the car for now! When it is time to move it, if you sense any aggression at all, please do call the police/neighbour etc to be with you.

You're doing every victim of cheeky fucker parking, justice right now!
