Why do people put these stickers on their car?

I was just following a car that had two stickers on the back - one saying "kiss my arse" and a Betty Boop cartoon with her bum exposed, and the other saying "you've just been overtaken by a girl". (See attached pics if interested).

Is it just me, or is this incredibly tacky? I mean, the "baby on board" stuff doesn't bother me. But why oh why does anyone need to announce that they are female for the benefit of the car they have overtaken? Doesn't this just perpetuate silly gender stereotypes about women drivers? And why tell a random stranger behind you to "kiss your arse"? Is that really necessary?

Do you have such slogans on your car? If so, please could you explain why, so that I can put this issue to bed and move on with my day. Grin

(I've been disproportionately irritated by this today - can you tell...?)Grin

Oh boy! My aviation enthusiast FIL gave DH one that says "My other vehicle is a Vulcan" (meaning the military aircraft) and DH, who is the least sticker-ish person ever, put it in the rear window! I suspect he's forgotten it's there, to be honest.

Ideally, I would like some stickers/magnets that say "Autistic driver: Please be patient." Namely to let other road users know why we might be travelling at a slower speed and why we might not move off from stationary as quickly as they'd like (we're being hyper-vigilant and checking for hidden hazards!).

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar
My Fiat 500 was the only one that I really enjoyed, it always improved my mood to drive it, so perhaps that's why I wanted to decorate it.

Your car makes me so happy!

I loathe bumper stickers as a rule, especially the stick figure families and the "My kid is an honor student" ones. [puke] However, I love it when folks decorate their cars for Christmas with lights and wreaths.

Gingefringe · 30/07/2021 18:03

I remember an old Alexi Sayle sketch which was a car driving through a massive puddle and soaking a load of pedestrians - the driver had a 'Bastard on Board' sticker.

I still think of that when I see 'Baby of Board'.

BadgeronaMoped · 30/07/2021 18:10

I drive past a bit of an old banger on my way to work, its bumper sticker says "certified shit waggon", and always makes me smile.

@ShadowInVain

My husband saw a caravan with a sticker saying 'If this van's a-rocking, don't come a-knocking' and found it hilarious enough not only to point out to me but to quote several times afterwards. Confused

Thank goodness, we don't have a caravan or he'd probably buy one.

These are fairly common in the US, so the sticker probably came from here.
DrSbaitso · 30/07/2021 18:12

I like the "How's my driving? Good? Call XXX and report this vehicle stolen."

ShadowInVain · 30/07/2021 18:13

It might well have done, thinking about it, because it was when we were down in Cornwall and there are often US tourists there.

I'd never seen one before.

I really think that you would find that this only makes people more impatient and aggressive, if my experience of P plates, shortly after I passed, is anything to go by.

It's stupid, but I think many people are put out by what they see as someone asking for special consideration on the roads.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 30/07/2021 18:18

I have one similar to the baby on board design which I put up when I am delivering a wedding cake. It very creatively says "wedding cake on board".
I hope it explains to the drivers behind why I'm Driving Miss Daisy....

I saw a septic-tank-emptying tanker (iyswim) with 'This is full of political promises ' painted in gigantic letters on the sides.

Butchyrestingface · 30/07/2021 18:33

Not if they are tied in properly and do you seriously think ambulance men go round reading the artwork on your car

I know someone who was ejected from vehicle as a baby - don't know if they were secured or not but force of impact ripped doors off car and out they went. However, ambulance personnel still managed to locate them, sans 'baby on board' sign and in the dark. Smile

toastfiend · 30/07/2021 18:39

I always assume that they're the same kind of people who have those "live, laugh, love" /"in this house we're powered by laughter" /"prosecco" /"boss bitch" (generally when their actually career doesn't remotely resemble that of a "boss bitch" signs up all over their houses. They're always inordinately proud of those, too, like it makes them super unique or something.

Anyway, long-winded way of saying I have absolutely no idea what possesses people to purchase and display this kind of shit. It always makes me a bit embarrassed for them.

2 of the absolute worst of the worst stickers I've ever seen to date are:

  • "no fat chicks..... car will scrape"
  • that horrific hand gesture of the first 2 fingers and pinky".... I'll attach a pic to show what I mean.

Usually found on the most chav tastic sheds on wheels... aka my ex boyfriend!

Why do people put these stickers on their car?
JudgeJ · 30/07/2021 18:41

@KupoNutCoffee

Can we add 'powered by fairy dust' / powered by bitch dust' written in pink Disney font, into the cringe fest?

Combined with eyelashes on headlights?

Just no need. I dislike any stickers on cars. Except the one on a thread few months back that had the pope in the backseat.

Can I add a pink, naturally, Princess on Board? I never understood the Baby on Board either, they were common in Germany long before the UK, 'Oh, I've decided not to ram into the back of you because you have a bay in there!'
ReginaaPhalange · 30/07/2021 18:41

Aka my ex boyfriends car.... not just him walking about with stickers on 😂

Oh I recall journeys like that when my late Mother made wedding cakes, total nightmare! My brother once broke a hand-made corner piece when we were waiting for collection and he disappeared for the rest of the day! Luckily she always took spares to the venue.
HTH1 · 30/07/2021 18:45

@Floralnomad

YANBU , but then I don’t get all the baby on board , princess on board rubbish either .
I read the ‘baby on board’ signs as saying ‘I am a sh*t driver’ as IME that’s always the case.
PopAyetheSailorMam · 30/07/2021 18:46

The last time I saw the stick figure family decals Daddy had been peeled off one side of the rear window … moved to the other side, next to a ‘knocked up’ stick figure. In his old place was a ‘situation vacant, currently interviewing candidates” home made sticker.

JudgeJ · 30/07/2021 18:47

One of our teachers was the NUT rep and had a bumper sticker declaring 'If you can read this thank a teacher'. We encouraged every reprobate in the school to ask him What does your bumper sticker say Sir? He wasn't pleased.

momager1 · 30/07/2021 18:47

two close to my home. 1. Ass Grass or Cash, nobody rides for free and 2) Kill your local pedophile and just while we are at it... have seen this one a few times too!!..

TheTallOakTrees · 30/07/2021 18:55

@Cooper88

I have car stickers, I also have tattoos and piercings. I like to decorate my body, my car my home my workspace. I like to be an individual and I like to express that in various forms. TBH I don't give a flying monkey if anyone else likes it as its not there car, body, home, workspace etc.
🤣
ShitPoetryClub · 30/07/2021 18:56

In Wigan (locals known as "pie eaters")
A van with the sticker "No pies are left in this vehicle overnight".
