Why do people put these stickers on their car?

I was just following a car that had two stickers on the back - one saying "kiss my arse" and a Betty Boop cartoon with her bum exposed, and the other saying "you've just been overtaken by a girl". (See attached pics if interested).

Is it just me, or is this incredibly tacky? I mean, the "baby on board" stuff doesn't bother me. But why oh why does anyone need to announce that they are female for the benefit of the car they have overtaken? Doesn't this just perpetuate silly gender stereotypes about women drivers? And why tell a random stranger behind you to "kiss your arse"? Is that really necessary?

Do you have such slogans on your car? If so, please could you explain why, so that I can put this issue to bed and move on with my day. Grin

(I've been disproportionately irritated by this today - can you tell...?)Grin

I thought the "Baby on Board" ones meant that everyone else should drive more carefully because of the "precious cargo". Used in a half-joking way, but still fairly obnoxious, because of course dangerous drivers notice and care who's in the other vehicles around them while they drive dangerously.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 30/07/2021 16:53

I had stickers on my car once. I'm not remotely the type usually but I generally consider cars as simply a method of getting from A to B and don't have any emotion attachment. My Fiat 500 was the only one that I really enjoyed, it always improved my mood to drive it, so perhaps that's why I wanted to decorate it.

Very tacky. Just why.

Spudlet · 30/07/2021 16:54

There’s a car that parks on the roadside in a village near us, that we pass pretty often. It has a bumper sticker that says: ‘My brakes are good. How’s your insurance? Back off’

I can’t say it makes me feel particularly positive about them, tbh. Talk about chippy!

Thats what I thought too!

My husband saw a caravan with a sticker saying 'If this van's a-rocking, don't come a-knocking' and found it hilarious enough not only to point out to me but to quote several times afterwards. Confused

Thank goodness, we don't have a caravan or he'd probably buy one.

feelingmehtoday · 30/07/2021 16:55

And "if you can read this, you're too close". Nope. I just have exceptionally good eyesight. Grin

Cringey. I hate bumper stickers, though they can be amusing on a long drive. In the US people use them to tell you their who life, from what school their lids are in, which sports team to hobbies and political affilations. Like anyone gives a stuff!

Fluffmonkey82 · 30/07/2021 17:00

One near me has "King (and then the child's name)on board". Sorry but just so tacky in my opinion..

DoylyCarte · 30/07/2021 17:01

I saw a bumper sticker once saying something along the lines of “I’m driving like a maniac… because I need a big poo” alongside a cartoon grinning turd 💩 Confused

Not exactly something to proudly advertise to all road users on every journey imo (even if it’s true)!

See also: "Little Princess Chardonnay on Board". Just no.

I’m generally not a fan of stickers and certainly not the type pictured by OP but we have this small one on our rear window because I love it.

I may also have a tea towel and beach towel with the same design. Perhaps I’m over-invested. 😄

I particularly dislike the cartoon families with all the DCs names on.

IHateCoronavirus · 30/07/2021 17:04

I never gave them much thought until my inquisitive DC started to read! Blush He likes to collect words! I had a bit of explaining to do with his reception teacher when he proudly said “arse” to the child sitting behind him during carpet time! One weekend away and he turned into a mini Father Jack Hackett!

Tacky but I’m not going to lose sleep over it.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 30/07/2021 17:07

@Ileflottante

I think the ‘Baby on Board’ ones are ludicrous too. They serve no purpose at all, apart from overly-enthused new parent attention seeking. Worse still, “Little Princess/Prince on board.” Pathetic.
They made my stepdad much more relaxed when DS1 was in the car, as he thought the drivers behind him would be more careful.

I don’t think that anyone was suggesting that you should?
ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 30/07/2021 17:10

Each to their own but this is cringe, embarrassing and unnecessary but obviously a reflection of the driver and her (bad) taste.

I have seen a few of those family stickers with mum and dad a child or two and dog etc. That is possibly less tacky as presumably for the benefit of the infant and on the rear window of a family estate car or sports utility vehicle etc but most after market stickers are in poor taste and unnecessary as it spoils the originality of a car. Also see quite a few more sporty models with a small Nürburgring Nordschleife (North Loop) which is acceptable for car enthusiasts if discrete if not in normally a non discrete supercar compete without engine revs delimiter or soft limiter removed and so unnecessary extra loud pops and bangs from the sports tuned exhaust etc. For years I never understood the ichthys fish symbol but that is fine for all good Christians as a sign of the peace. Spotted a few NHS rainbow graphics on car windows which again is fine and perfectly acceptable and indeed much appreciated and appreciation for the frontline NHS in this unprecedented pandemic.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 30/07/2021 17:11

Saw one on a white van. "Have you ever been shunted?"

Battleofwhocouldcareless · 30/07/2021 17:11

I hate car stickers of any kind, including the baby on board ones. Why obscure your vision by putting things on the window if your children are so precious? I do appreciate the black van parked near us though that looks like the A Team van.

CuteOrangeElephant · 30/07/2021 17:11

There used to be a car parked near my home with a Betty Boob sticker and the text "if you are riding this close at least pull my hair".

Unsurprisingly the owner was vile, after we found out after she backed into our car and drove off.

'Powered by fairy dust' is so cringe Confused

I bet they have pictures in their home saying LIVE LOVE LAUGH... and BE CALM... AND GO SHOPPING...... etc etc etc...

But yeah @feelingmehtoday the stickers you have posted, are really naff.

I also dislike eyelashes on headlights, and 'little princess/little prince on board...' signs.

I don't hate ALL signs though. I saw one some 25 years ago, that still makes me chuckle today.......

'IF YOU CAN READ THIS...... I'VE LOST MY CARAVAN...' Grin
