Why do people put these stickers on their car?

feelingmehtoday · 30/07/2021 15:49

I was just following a car that had two stickers on the back - one saying "kiss my arse" and a Betty Boop cartoon with her bum exposed, and the other saying "you've just been overtaken by a girl". (See attached pics if interested).

Is it just me, or is this incredibly tacky? I mean, the "baby on board" stuff doesn't bother me. But why oh why does anyone need to announce that they are female for the benefit of the car they have overtaken? Doesn't this just perpetuate silly gender stereotypes about women drivers? And why tell a random stranger behind you to "kiss your arse"? Is that really necessary?

Do you have such slogans on your car? If so, please could you explain why, so that I can put this issue to bed and move on with my day. Grin

(I've been disproportionately irritated by this today - can you tell...?)Grin

@dreamersdown

‘Baby on Board’ signs aren’t at all the same thing. Parents have them to signal to the emergency services that there is a baby travelling in the vehicle, as they can be thrown from the vehicle during accidents.
This is a myth.

Tacckkyyyyy

FreeSpirits · 30/07/2021 16:28

@takingmytimeonmyride it was probably a joke.. like most of them are. Different sense of humour to you i guess 🤦

lazyarse123 · 30/07/2021 16:29

@FreeSpirits

Biscuit
I'm guessing you've got one or both of these. You're not wrong op. Tacky.
atlastifoundit · 30/07/2021 16:30

I once saw a Rolls Royce with a sticker in the back window which read: "My other car is a Porsche".

Because they are thick and think it shows them to be something, no idea what though, but it isn't anything good.

TheBullfinch · 30/07/2021 16:32

Tacky but not as bad as those claiming to be "powered by fairy dust!"

FreeSpirits · 30/07/2021 16:32

@lazyarse123 lol no I don't drive Wink

NigellaSeed · 30/07/2021 16:35

I have a baby on board sticker to let people know I will be driving at or below the speed limit. Still get wankers driving up my butt though.

Agree that OP stickers are awful. Like they are some kind of self-misogny

@Pellewsmate

Nothing in or on my car identifies my sex. I choose not to make myself a target to men who don't appreciate being overtaken by a 'girl' or any pervs hanging around dark carparks at night. I realise that this is a sad way to view the world.

I wouldn't want to identify my sex on my car either. I can't think of any good reason to do this.

Oh no. All these years I have got the baby on board ones wrong.
I thought it was an instruction to other car drivers. Please sound your horn, to wake up little Jimmy, so he can can scream and I know his lungs are still working.
I feel so silly now!
(Lighthearted, just in case anyone thinks I am serious)

ShadowInVain · 30/07/2021 16:40

Slightly off-topic, but I've never understood the appeal of Betty Boop at all. Well, I could understand male appeal as she's based on a 30s sex-symbol, but I've often seen women with Betty Boop merchandise.

They used to show Betty Boop cartoons on TV when I was a child and they were boring as fuck as well.

3scape · 30/07/2021 16:41

I'm not a fan of stickers. If I was in charge the irritating habit some certain neighbour has of lining up a whole row of National Trust badges. We have one, we replace it. This guy appears to have committed a proper sin as he has moved them from at least one previous car that we've seen.

You like days out. Well done.

My father told me this, @dreamersdown, but apparently it is an urban myth - I’ve seen it debunked on here several times.

Oh, goodness, we're guilty of this with English Heritage badges. We've got about 5 on our car I think. Blush. We just CBA to remove them.
Ileflottante · 30/07/2021 16:44

I think the ‘Baby on Board’ ones are ludicrous too. They serve no purpose at all, apart from overly-enthused new parent attention seeking. Worse still, “Little Princess/Prince on board.” Pathetic.

Ifixfastjets · 30/07/2021 16:45

On a more serious note, I thought they were there to alert other drivers that the driver of the vehicle with the sign might be distracted from their driving.
If the baby suddenly wakes up/gets wind/poops/ screams it head off for whatever reason.
Just be kind and give them a little extra space?

ShadowInVain · 30/07/2021 16:46

I can't imagine that anyone thinks 'Oh, that car's got a 'Baby on Board' sticker so I'll wait for a different one to crash into.'

But surely you should be giving appropriate space to all cars?
TheTallOakTrees · 30/07/2021 16:49

Not so bad but also feeble are the stickers saying

Living my best life

Boss girl

Chief executive at (insert ant mlm scheme) unique, Avon, blah blah blah. Grin

Heartofglass12345 · 30/07/2021 16:51

Oh my god they're awful! I hate baby on board ones too though lol

feelingmehtoday · 30/07/2021 16:51

With the baby on board ones, I always thought they might make tailgating idiots think twice if they saw it on the back - maybe it would prick their conscience and they'd back off a little? I don't know. Maybe I'm naive Grin

No different to people having tacky pictures all over their bodies and I assume they are a lot cheaper and don’t hurt.
People just like different things.
(No I don’t have stickers or tattoos)

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/07/2021 16:52

Oh the baby on board stickers are pointless. Concentrate on the road before you cause an accident.

Grinch48 · 30/07/2021 16:52

Years ago I bought a car that had the sticker
f…k work let’s party in the back window

I must admit I did like that sticker and didn’t get rid of it
