To want a baby at 36

In a stable, loving relationship and want to have a baby. Just turned 36 in July. This wasn’t really on the cards before as I’ve been so career focused.

I’m worried I’ve left it too late and everything around ‘geriatric’ pregnancy is scaring the life out of me! AIBU?

I made my last hold when I was 42. Not one person referred to me as a geriatric mother

Samanabanana · 27/07/2021 20:29

I am 36 and pregnant. Much easier pregnancy than when I was 30!

EdgeOfACoin · 27/07/2021 20:31

I'm 38 and pregnant. I've never once been described as having a 'geriatric' pregnancy, either to my face or in my notes. Not one health professional has (yet) commented on my age.

PS have you started any other threads about this topic recently? It sounds very familiar. Apologies if not.

WorriedMillie · 27/07/2021 20:31

Bollocks to “geriatric”, I had DD at 36 and I know heaps of women who had babies into their 40s. Go for it Flowers

Sweetpeasaremadeofcheese · 27/07/2021 20:31

I had my third and final baby at 36 and the birth and recovery was by far the easiest of all 3. Conceived him quicker, too.

Clymene · 27/07/2021 20:32

What I meant to say was I had my last baby when I was 42. Obviously BlushHmmGrin
CautiousOptimist11 · 27/07/2021 20:32

I had my second a while ago at 35, almost 36. I found out at these midwife appts that they had in fact changed the age of geriatric mothers to 40!! Not that a label really matters

sweetheartyparty · 27/07/2021 20:33

I was 39 and nobody mentioned anything about geriatric pregnancies. I loved being pregnant and it was fairly easy.
Being established in your career certainly helps financially and career wise too.

cookiecreampie · 27/07/2021 20:33

I don't think it's too old if you really want a baby but if you're in any doubt at all don't do it. I had completed my family by 28 and didn't want any older than that.

Inmypjsagain · 27/07/2021 20:33

I am 34 and am the youngest in my NCT group- everyone else ranges between 37-44, so not too old at all 😊

woodfort · 27/07/2021 20:36

This isn’t remotely old, at least in a lot of circles it isn’t.

I was 30 and the youngest in my NCT. I would say half of university friends had had a child by 35 with 28 or 29 or so being the absolute youngest anyone had started having children.

KurtWilde · 27/07/2021 20:37

I had my youngest at 38, easiest pregnancy and quickest recovery of all my DC!

Merryoldgoat · 27/07/2021 20:40

No one even mentioned ‘geriatric pregnancy’ to me once and I had mine at 34 & 39.

At my NCT group there were 6 of us:

33, 34, 34, 38, 39, 40

I felt like a youngster

StoneofDestiny · 27/07/2021 20:41

Definitely not too old

Taliskerskye · 27/07/2021 20:43

Is this a fucking joke

KurtWilde · 27/07/2021 20:44

No one mentioned geriatric pregnancy to me either.

ecosln · 27/07/2021 20:46

I was pregnant with dc3 at 36 when I saw on call the midwife someone called a geriatric pregnancy (maybe the dr wife the Scottish nun - midwife)

But that was set in the 1960s? Never heard geriatric used.

36 exhausted with my 3rd but no issue with #1 I'd say... or 2!

Maireas · 27/07/2021 20:46

I had mine at 36, I was never referred to as geriatric, and that was 25 years ago.
If you were 46 it would be more problematic.
You're still young!
There was a woman on here claiming to be pregnant at 53, but the thread was deleted.

Fluffingheck · 27/07/2021 20:48

I had mine at 36 and 37. Got pregnant within a month of trying both times. Had never wanted them earlier. Had no significant problems at all with pregnancy or labour, bar symphis pubis with no.2, but that was due to them being so close in age, nothing to do with my age. Go for it.

lastcall · 27/07/2021 20:49

Ignore the misogyny if you come across it. No one talks about 'geriatric fathers to be' about men in their 30s, just women of course. Nothing geriatric about it at all, frankly.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 27/07/2021 20:50

Just had a baby at 38. Nobody ever mentioned my age and I was definitely never described as geriatric.

Justcashnosweets · 27/07/2021 20:51

I had my DD at 37. Go for it!

LST · 27/07/2021 20:53

In my personal circumstances I wouldn't have a baby at 36. But that is because I have 2 kids already and I am now disabled. Lot's of people I know only started in their mid 30s

Folklore9074 · 27/07/2021 20:54

Having my first at 36. I absolutely do not feel too old and I'm still one of the first of my friends to be having a baby. People leave it later these days for all sorts of reasons. Not been referred to as 'geriatric' once.

romany4 · 27/07/2021 20:56

36 isn't old!
My SIL and brother had their first child a year ago. They're both 43!
