Is it race, religion, status or lifestyle? In my experience it’s how one parents. What’s your experience?

@EspressoDoubleShot

Oh do stop all the faux naïveté. Posting What’s class?who am I? It’s Tiresome and contrived I note you mentioned “professional qualifications and earn six figures” why? If you’re classless why’s that matter? Unless you’re suggesting class ascendency
You’re absolutely obsessed with class. Get rid of that chip.
MarcusRashford · 25/07/2021 09:26

I have two examples where the class argument is proved in my opinion.

The area I now live is home to some exceptionally wealthy people, in homes worth circa £15m +. I am not one of them! I clean for them. They educate their children at Eton and think nothing of throwing 6 figures on a party. They are truly horrible people, they believe they ‘own’ their staff and they believe we are not free to be employed elsewhere. One former employee was bullied to almost breaking point because they resigned - she worked her notice because she believed it to be the right thing but I’m not sure how she did it. They believe they are a higher form of human!

Another example is a former colleague. He was from a working class background. He got a good job that enabled him to buy a Jag on PCP and get a new kitchen on HP. He now tells everyone he’s middle class.

I hate the class in our society but anyone who says it doesn’t exist is deluding themselves. It’s mostly around money.

humadum · 25/07/2021 09:28

This country's obsession with class often amuses me, until I realise again that there are deep-seated inequalities based on social stratification.

In fact, recently, I completed that old BBC 'What Class Are You?' quiz. I trusted that it would be relatively unbiased and quite reliable, because it was from the BBC. I filled it in (reasonably accurately) and came out as a 'Pleb'! '

'What the F*!' sorry, 'Oh Dickens!' I thought, 'How can this be?'. So, I did it again, but just altered the earnings category (because I identify as being rich, and I should respect that). I came out as 'Elite'.

Obviously, the quiz is nonsensical, but according to recent reports, Britain is the fifth most unequal country in Europe (in terms of economic equality), and in a Capitalist society, money if the commodity that can get us all those things upon which we may be 'judged' (private dentistry for great teeth; lovely clothes to flatter our body shape, top class education, property and so on). So perhaps, indirectly, all our judgements are made on the basis of perceived and possible wealth.

CatsArePeople · 25/07/2021 09:39

However, the faux baffled what is”a class” it’s really disingenuous

I am not from UK orginally. I'm often puzzled by what people think they are NOT ALLOWED to do because of their class. I.e. if you're "working class", going to a classical music concert seriously raises eyebrows. Or "middle class" people are too embarrased to admit they sometimes (!) shop in Aldi. Come on, seriously???

As for judgement - political position. Left wing is trendy. Conservative is ick. Being left wing but disagreeing with the most popular movements, like BLM or climate change, or gender spectrum - you're a literal nazi.

StrangeToSee · 25/07/2021 09:39

Interesting thread.

I hardly notice accents, unless I can’t understand the person (eg I couldn’t understand my Scottish colleague for ages but it didn’t click she had a Scottish accent at first, I just thought she talked a lot!)

Race is misleading because you’d be judging on appearance/accent and they may well be British citizens!

Class barriers are impossible to cross. I don't think people always do it consciously, but they stick together by class and background more than anything else.

See whenever people say stuff like this I'm just baffled. I don't have a "class". It's like some weird religion I don't believe in, I really don't understand it and am happy for others to believe in it of course like any other faith but this idea that people categorise themselves and others like this is totally alien and wierd to me.

Just because you dont believe. in it, doesn't make it false. There has been much research into class and it's by far the greatest determinant in terms of life chances / opportunity and advancement.

Aside from class, I believe people judge others based on weight.

TheBullfinch · 25/07/2021 09:43

ffs ... the previous two quotes should have been in bold.

TheBullfinch · 25/07/2021 09:45

True.

Also, men who live alone. People always think there must be something wrong with 'the loner.'

pleasedonttextmyman · 25/07/2021 09:48

See whenever people say stuff like this I'm just baffled. I don't have a "class".

you might disagree with the concept, but you still belong to one (class). Everybody does.

You belong to a certain culture too.

That baffles me how it is seen as a bad thing for single people. It is actually pretty practical. Saves money, you help each other out when needed. Why leave your parents with an empty room and pay somebody else's mortgage?

pleasedonttextmyman · 25/07/2021 09:52

Wrong example.

Unless you start downing a can of beer and eat crisps in the middle of the performance, classical concert doesn't raise any eyebrows at all, it's people explaining how embarrassed or out of place they feel.
Also seen on threads about expensive restaurants.

Aldi is very fashionable and even the most wealthy laugh at the hilarious prices. Everybody goes to Aldi.
And pretty much all teens go to Primark!

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/07/2021 09:52

“Adults still living at home“

Think that was true a few years ago, not so much now though.

pleasedonttextmyman · 25/07/2021 09:53

Of course appearance!

Body weight
make-up
choice of clothes (not label as such)

then manners in the widest sense.
Hear "alright darling" and you have judged.

CatsArePeople · 25/07/2021 10:07

Wrong example.

just the most general examples. i have experienced many more, which i do find rather strange, given that money/affordability isn't the actual issue.

pleasedonttextmyman · 25/07/2021 10:13

The UK being a Monarchy and believing in class from birth is especially bad, but I can't think of any country where there's no such thing as a "social class"of some kind.

JungleBeats · 25/07/2021 10:16

I never feel judged. I'm sure I am regularly, I just never feel it.

Same here. Either I’m very thick skinned or more likely just don’t care 😁

The UK being a Monarchy and believing in class from birth is especially bad, but I can't think of any country where there's no such thing as a "social class"of some kind.

Other countries have had revolutions and other events that kind of erased/re-invented the class markers, like money earned being more important than birth.

pleasedonttextmyman · 25/07/2021 10:30

so one way or another, you get judged by society, that's the point.

Savannahnanana · 25/07/2021 10:42

Whether they wear a mask or not. The judgement is monumental.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 25/07/2021 10:45

@EmeraldShamrock

If I was to use MN as a guide then probably a lot. I'm happy living my life so don't care much for how others judge me. I can't change their mindset, I'm not harmful to anyone.
Same. I find this place a bit of a nonsense sometimes, not at all representative of real life.

The worst for me is that here is mainly women judging other women for absolutely anything... as if we don't have enough challenges already. It's sad really.

I know! "Such a MC thing to do ha". Confused It's like "this is your bracket, don't fuck it up by doing other things". I remember reading here ghat olives were quite MC. WtAf.

If someone tells someone often enough that they cannot do something because of their class, they will eventually start believing it.

pleasedonttextmyman · 25/07/2021 13:12

Same. I find this place a bit of a nonsense sometimes, not at all representative of real life.

It gets even more obvious when you have children, so I'd say it's more than representative of real life.

Onlinedilema · 27/07/2021 04:17

I think men with tatooes and piercings are judged too. If I had a choice of approaching a stranger I would choose a man in a suit with clean, smart shoes, hair and a good looking over a heavily tatooed, pierced bald headed tracksuit wearing man any day.
As humans we have to make snap decisions. Once you get to know someone this may change.
