Genuinely interested in what people think of him and his presidency thus far. It’s a truth universally acknowledged that Trump was considered lower than a worm’s privates on Mumsnet but there seems to be little or no excitement about JB, is he really that meh?

I'm just relieved at how boring things have become over in the US.

However he has done one thing that few governments in the English speaking world have done - he put the poor, and working class front and center of aid for Covid relief. For the first time in decades actual money has come in to those families every week (or month?) for a year. The poor, and struggling got a break, could count on definite income, and could have a small break from worry.

Yes - the advance Child Tax Credit payments just started going out. $300 a month for children under 6 and $250 a month for children 6-17. We got our first cheque last week.

There are more stimulus cheques going out any minute now too.

@CarpeVitam

He later apologised for his tone so.... 🤷‍♀️
PR exercise.
NiceGerbil · 23/07/2021 19:44

For me personally trump was a big deal because USA exports cultural ideas and they have massive armed forces and do act unilaterally etc and he was bonkers.

Now he's gone I'm back to being not any more interested than other countries a long way away which are so different.

eightlivesdown · 23/07/2021 20:35

Biden is given a soft ride by the media and should be subject to more scrutiny / challenge, as the job is US President is too big / important for "not being Trump" to be good enough.

Yes - I understand when Americans say they're Irish-American or Scottish-American or Italian-American, but I do roll my eyes when they say they're Irish or Scottish or Italian.

eightlivesdown · 23/07/2021 21:23

I'd wager that most "Irish"-Americans have never set foot in Ireland and half of them would struggle to find it on a map.

DrManhattan · 23/07/2021 21:34

Total prick

Nonetheless, the Congressional Irish caucus is strong. It’s unwise to dismiss how important Irish sentiment is in US politics, whether you agree with/approve of it or not.
teawamutu · 23/07/2021 21:48

@Cazzovuoi

He’s helped erase women’s sports in the US and puts men’s feelings above the safety of women and girls.

Tells me all I need to know Angry

Yup, same here.

Same old shit, slightly more acceptable packaging IMO.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 23/07/2021 21:48

@JaneJeffer

How is this man president of the USA? He also told someone in the audience they won't get Covid if they are vaccinated.
Jesus. This is terrifying.

I just assume he’s not actually making any decisions or doing any of the real work behind the scenes.
He’s just got a friendly, white, male face to front it all.

Sn0tnose · 23/07/2021 21:52

I think he is no better than Trump. He just manages to hide his contempt for women behind a more acceptable facade.

Megasausagehead · 23/07/2021 21:58

Imho nobody could be worse than Trump, BUT that doesn't mean Biden is good.

When are countries, including UK going to start putting forward credible leaders, instead of muppets. Sick of picking the least bad option, rather than the best.

Truthseeker34 · 23/07/2021 22:00

@VeryQuaintIrene

As a US resident, he's a real relief after that tosser Trump. No, he's not perfect or especially charismatic, but he's also not deceitful, anti-science, sexist and incompetent, so there's that. It's been lovely not to see that nasty little orange face and hear that vile barking every night on the news.
Was trump incompetent though...or did the media just portray that. When I started looking into what he actually did , he seemed to introduce some good policies. The border , ( we are now seeing the horrendous crimes being committed by criminal gangs , trafficking laws and crucially, his middle Eastern policies. He also had began to make America energy efficient, I don't get it ?! Have we all been brainwashed and manipulated by the media ?
ZZTopGuitarSolo · 23/07/2021 22:12

I'm interested to read more about how he was making America energy efficient. My impression was that he was focusing on making America energy dominant, which isn't the same thing.

Justcallmebebes · 23/07/2021 22:57

He's thrown the Afghans to the wolves as Trump did with the Kurds. He's done women in sport no favours and sometimes he barely knows what day of the week it is and when he does he's not too bright

TigersandTeddybears · 23/07/2021 23:02

Until I just read this thread it had been nearly a week since I thought about American politics at all. It used to be multiple times a day. I feel like he must be doing what he was voted in for them, really. Just quietly keeping things going, not really rocking the boat for anyone. A time of quiet after the hell of trump?

borntobequiet · 23/07/2021 23:04

I’m British but interested in American politics. I know that my knowledge is limited and that there’s no direct equivalence between the UK and the USA in many respects. This makes me wary of drawing conclusions about Biden’s stance on a number of issues based on how those issues are perceived here. I think this isn’t properly understood by some commentators, and is exploited deliberately by others to discredit him. Both political systems here and in the US are deeply flawed, but that seems to suit many who seek to exploit those flaws to undermine the societies they are supposed to serve.

Severncity · 24/07/2021 01:26

All those stimulus cheques are being paid for from where? I do worry about this phenomenon of pulling money from nowhere. If nations are just creating money then how do they repay debt to other countries. I dislike Biden for his decimation of women's rights. He said he was going to do this before comimg to power though so it shouldn't have been a surprise.
Trump is an awful person but, like a previous poster said, if you try to find evidence of terrible policies he put in place..well I struggle to find tangible evidence. At least you knew what you were getting with Trump. I don't trust Biden at all.

Mockolate · 24/07/2021 01:52

He’s helped erase women’s sports in the US and puts men’s feelings above the safety of women and girls.

Also translates as he is inclusive of trans people, but, yay, let's completely gloss over that and dismiss as "men's feelings" Hmm
I'm female, white, straight, not trans, but a million times would rather Biden be in office than Trump and his discriminating shite anyday.
