Have just been to toddlers where one of the mothers was moaning that her DS had been up all night coughing. He was stood there with green snot all down his face poor little mite. He should have been indoors. Now its going to be passed round all the kids

Can't stand that. I stayed away from our group for 3 weeks as I had a cold and didn't want to pass to the little ones.

belgo · 26/11/2007 15:22

That's a sure way for her to alienate herself from other mothers. Some of the mothers I know get really annoyed if they think their child has been exposed to an illness.

yurt1 · 26/11/2007 15:27

you can't stay in for every cold though or you'd never go out. I keep mine in if they have temperatures otherwise they go off to school/nursery/activities. They get exposed by siblings/people in shops anyway. Always think its best to get as many colds as possible during pre-school years or they end up taking half of reception off.

3missyshohoho · 26/11/2007 15:28

See your point but on the other hand kids catch colds from anywhere these days and you can't keep them locked up in the house forever....

harleyd · 26/11/2007 15:28

i have 4 kids and if i didnt go out every time one of them had a cold i wouldnt have left the house for the last 6 weeks

tullytwo · 26/11/2007 15:29

elliemac are you from NI? had never heard that phrase until I moved here so was just wondering!

bossykate · 26/11/2007 15:30

YABU sorry. why not keep them in all the time - just in case they are incubating something and are infectious without displaying any symptoms.

yurt1 · 26/11/2007 15:30

I say it! (in Devon although married to an Ulsterman for 10 years so.... hmmm who knows)

elliemac · 26/11/2007 15:31

I just wouldn't take my DD anywhere like that if she had a bad cold. The LO was really miserable for heavens sake!

say what?

yurt1 · 26/11/2007 15:32

wait until you've got 3 and have to get to work, or 3 and 2 others who want to go out- really unless they have a temperature you won't be staying in.

elliemac · 26/11/2007 15:33

Sorry - what phrase are we talking about? Bit slow this aft. Am tired

OP posts:
harleyd · 26/11/2007 15:34

full of the cold

belgo · 26/11/2007 15:34

'full of the cold' presumably?

NineUnlikelyTales · 26/11/2007 15:35

If the child was miserable then that is not on but otherwise, I don't see why they shouldn't go. On Friday almost every child had a runny nose - there would only have been about 3 children if they had all stayed at home! It is good for their immune systems to catch colds now whilst they are young.

elliemac · 26/11/2007 15:36

Gotta go - sorry! LO was having a nap but i can hear Muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmm coming from the cot. Time to get the toys out

saw that myself, some woman took a toddler streaming green snot to toddlers despite knowing my dd would be there and is severely disabled and at huge risk of repiratory issues. Colds can kill, same as measles. They also make anyone feel crappy for a week so why share?
I have 4 kids and have never taken them out at the temp/green snot stage.

bossybritches · 26/11/2007 15:39

There is a difference between being full of cold & just "snotty" & being ill with it. If the child had been up all night he wouldn't be at his best (or the mum!!) & more liable to pick up some other bug so it was selfish of the mother on two counts!

We had a little lad who would bounce through the door every morning green nose pouring & happy as Larry all winter-better out than in!

belgo · 26/11/2007 15:40

no I wouldn't take out my kids if they have a temp/green snot/ have been up all night coughing.

I know colds are normal, but don't really like them passed around.

A snotty nose is normal though for some childen, even if they are not ill.

hayCHingleBells · 26/11/2007 15:41

YABU
I also agree, colds are unavoidable, whether its caught at a toddler group or in Tescos.

You cant keep them off from school when they start with every cough and cold, so why bother when they are toddlers.

If you are a working mum as i am now that mine are both at school, it is not an option to keep them off school with every single illness. Of course if really poorly then i would take a day off, but not for a snotty nose and a cough.

LoveAngelGabriel · 26/11/2007 15:43

YAB a bit U. My son had a bad cold last week and we stayed away from toddler group, but that was only because it was really nasty and he wasn't well enough to play- if he had just had the sniffles, iIwould have gone along as normal. You can't isolate a child just because they're coldy. If they're well enough to run around and play, what's the harm? Kids get colds in the winter - it's not the end of the world.

SoupDragon · 26/11/2007 15:43

If I stopped going anywhere when BabyDragon has a snotty nose I'd never leave the house.

As for mothers who get annoyed if they think their child has been exposed to an illness, they really need to get a grip in so far as a cold is concerned.

Stomach bugs OTOH are a different matter.

S1ur · 26/11/2007 15:47

YABU IMO Colds are so common in winter, if you're really bothered about your dcs not being exposed to any illnesses then there are other things you could do, feed them up with vitamins, garlic etc, not take them to large shops with air conditioning or schools/toddler groups. I would take mine out if there were snotty, but not if they were feeling crappy and tired because they'd have a miserable time.

Colds are just part of the 'health of the herd' aren't they? Yucky tummy bugs are a bit different as are chicken pox etc...

SoupDragon · 26/11/2007 15:47

She has a snotty nose and a hacking cough right now in fact and yes, I will be taking her to toddlers tomorrow.

belgo · 26/11/2007 15:48

but would you still take her if she has a high temperature?
