To think people saying "stop moaning about the weather" need to fuck off?

I'm heavily pregnant, pale, ginger and really suffering. I'm sure there are people struggling more than I am though. I'm in London where it's expected to reach 32(?) today.

Not everybody can cope well with this heat and humidity. The met office has issued extreme weather warnings yet some people think we're supposed to be grateful for it.

AIBU to think those people need to fuck off?

I'm in two minds, yes it's hot and uncomfortable but it's summer and this isn't abnormal, most years we get at least a week or two of hot weather, and it's nothing new, I remember standing outside pubs in London in sundresses in the 90's late at night.

I know the main issue is that our homes are designed to retain heat but for just a few days we can cope with heat if sensible - eg sleep downstairs which is normally cooler or even what the DD's did - in the garden on the sun loungers (since regretted as mosquitoes got them, at 20 they are old enough to know to put on jungle spray!)

pleasedonttextmyman · 21/07/2021 13:21

we had MONTHS of people moaning they could not do anything with their children or themselves because of the rain.

So many parents refuse to consider that a child would walk 2 minutes to school in the rain.

We have a bit of sun for a change, it's nice, but it won't last. Then people will moan again that rain is ruining their holidays.

As on the other thread about buildings, I do think that having shutters would make our lives easier though.

angieloumc · 21/07/2021 13:22

Poor you OP, it's awful being so uncomfortable while pregnant.
I absolutely love winter, can tolerate autumn or even spring but I can't bear the heat or bright sunshine; I'm brunette with blue eyes and so pale a milk bottle has more colour. I itch, get prickly heat, my eyes are sore with the brightness, I feel nauseated and tired, I could go on. I do moan about it but only to my 16 yo who is much the same though she has blonde hair and a combination of my and her dads red hair and even paler skin. I don't go abroad on holiday as I can't bear it, she has been to Europe with school and to Virginia US to her grandpa's in the summer and it is even worse there though he has air con. She always says when her friends are off to Ibiza after sixth firm she'll be going on a fjord cruise!
I get why a lot of people do love the hot sunny weather though, each to their own though I do internally roll my eyes when I see on social media 'catching rays' or 'getting my dose of vitamin D'

tigger1001 · 21/07/2021 13:22

I'm in central Scotland and am finding the heat difficult, so you have my sympathies op.

I struggle in the heat. Can't focus and can't sleep. Which is fine when not at work, but not so much in work.

I am off today though and the cloud is burning off so will sit outside for a while, but in the shade. It's awful when it's hot and you haven't got an outdoor space to enjoy.

I like all the seasons but not the extremes of each one.

ChrissyPlummer · 21/07/2021 13:23

@GirlAloud I have said for the last few years now, we don’t get four distinct seasons anymore. Where I am it’s usually raining and cold, occasionally raining and windy or we get a few days of decent, warm weather when it’s not actually actively unpleasant to go outside. 2018 wasn’t THAT good, June was a nice month here but nothing amazing after that.

Cottagepieandpeas · 21/07/2021 13:27

I can't stand the way there is a kind of moral judgement attached to how you feel about hot weather.
If I say I don't like it (which I don't) some people are quick to call me a misery, tell me to enjoy it etc. Good for them if they like it - but not liking it doesn't mean I am a killjoy!
I'm fine in cold weather - I don't moan about that, but I never tell people to stop moaning in January and they should be enjoying it.

Grrr

DynamoKev · 21/07/2021 13:28

@NeedingAGoodNap

32 isn’t really that hot. I guess people don’t want to hear constant complaining? If you keep going on about it maybe they are just annoyed!
32 is very hot and uncomfortable
PlanetTeaTime · 21/07/2021 13:29

I agree OP I think those people need to mind their own beeswax. I'm really not a hot weather person at all! And the countries that are used to this kind of weather also as standard have air con so it's not comparable

pleasedonttextmyman · 21/07/2021 13:31

we're not in Dubai, it's England.. that's why. It's never that hot here.
Or that cold... we do have an unbelievable low level of resilience.

Don't get me wrong, still way too hot to leave a dog in a car, walk a dog at midday or take a baby or toddler on the beach in the middle of the day, but people are stupid everywhere.

pleasedonttextmyman · 21/07/2021 13:35

each to their own though I do internally roll my eyes when I see on social media 'catching rays' or 'getting my dose of vitamin D'

It is estimated that 16% of children in the UK will be deficient in vitamin D leading to myriad signs and symptoms.

🤷

whistlers · 21/07/2021 13:36

@coogee

It is for England if you don't have air con or a pool...

I have neither. To me, it’s warm, not hot. When it starts getting towards 40, then it’s hot.

Competitive heat loving is something I like to complain about.

32 is objectively hot.

Nobody would be so judgmental about other preferences, like food. I don't like butter, but nobody has ever told me I'm being a misery for not putting it on my toast.
sloanerangerpandora · 21/07/2021 13:38

It's literally hot for 2 weeks of the year.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 21/07/2021 13:40

What kind of weirdo doesn't like butter on toast?! What a misery you must be Grin

jay55 · 21/07/2021 13:40

I'm really struggling to focus on work in the heat, and wish I was in a lovely air conditioned office. I can't even go and work in a coffee shop because I need two screens for this piece of work.

I'm totally in the complaining camp.

Katefoster · 21/07/2021 13:42

I feel you OP. I'm only 21 weeks pregnant but I'm sure if I was able to drink my way through the summer I'd be happier. I hate this weather, always have done. I'm back in work tomorrow in full PPE and it was over 40degrees in there yesterday. This weather just isn't enjoyable

Yes I understand that, and I wasn't saying that people don't need vitamin D. They don't say I they're getting their vitamin D on a mild but sunny day though.
Pedalpushers · 21/07/2021 13:44

Considering all violent crime goes up by up to 20 percent in the summer, it seems like hot sunny days and bad moods go hand in hand.

Mrstreehouse · 21/07/2021 13:48

@CaptainThe95thRifles maybe because some people are not in the same part of the U.K. as you? We haven’t had wind or thunderstorms for weeks here.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 21/07/2021 13:49

Hot weather in the UK is unpleasant. Partly because we aren't used to it and aren't set up for it but also because of the actual conditions.

I was once chatting to a native American who was born and brought up in Death Valley, the temperature was over 40c. He said it wasn't that bad, as the conversation went on he told us that he'd been in the armed forces and had served all over the world. He'd been in Afghanistan, Iraq, the jungle, the Arctic, Africa etc. But he said the most inhospitable climate he'd ever encountered was in........

........ Wales 🤣

Graphista · 21/07/2021 13:54

YANBU

Not all of us are designed for heat. I'm also a pale redhead and have eczema which turns into something else entirely when I'm sweaty and trying to stay cool. I'm also prone to headaches from heat like this even when I drink plenty

I'm in Scotland struggling with the 23°c heat I would not hope with 32°c! That said no doubt hotter in my flat I don't know how hot though.

I've 2 fans and 2 chill max pillow inserts which help a little

Some people are stuck in overheated flats with no way of cooling down (or other shit situations).

Yep! That would inc me. Victorian tenement designed for cold winters not hot summers

Equally I'm able to sympathise with those who hate cold/wet weather like my mum who's arthritis plays up horrifically when that is the case

Too many lack basic empathy.

I don't really think being pale and ginger have anything to do with it though

Those of us with Celtic genetics tend to cope better in cooler weather in a variety of ways. We tend not to have bodies good at cooling us, more prone not just to sunburn but prickly heat and other effects eg we're more likely than others to experience pain due to extremes of heat - not just through sunburn but generally our nerves over respond

In countries where these temps are more common the buildings and infrastructure is designed accordingly

In addition being pregnant means op is effectively dealing with 2 peoples body heat in one body

@Borisjohnsonshairbrush have you not got a drawstring cover thing for bathing/showering?

Justcallmebebes · 21/07/2021 13:54

I love it and agree, 32 is not that hot. We don't have the humidity so it's totally bearable. Aware not everyone agrees though but in a week's time everyone will be moaning it's cold/wet

CaptainThe95thRifles · 21/07/2021 13:55
@CaptainThe95thRifles maybe because some people are not in the same part of the U.K. as you? We haven’t had wind or thunderstorms for weeks here.
Well, no shit - but the OP is in London, which certainly had thunderstorms forecast in the last couple of days, and there were certainly storms last night within 50 miles of London.

So if posters elsewhere are having lovely, non-thundery, warm weather and saying the OP is unreasonable for finding London area weather unbearable, I think it's those posters who are unreasonable because their lovely weather is irrelevant to the OP's experience.

UrbanRambler · 21/07/2021 13:57

YANBU, 32 degrees is very hot by UK standards, and the fact that the temperature is in the 20s each night makes sleeping very difficult.

I like sunshine but you can have too much of a good thing. low 20s - lovely. 25 - bearable. 30s - yuk.

OTOH, moaning about it constantly in RL might annoy people who enjoy this heat and fall asleep instantly each night, no matter what. Sometimes people only have empathy if they have struggled with the same issue, so just don't understand, so in that case have a moan here, rather than RL.

Weather due to change on Friday, not long OP. ☺

badacorn · 21/07/2021 13:58

Nobody likes to be told to stop moaning. It’s moaning about moaning so I dunno.

The heat can fuck off though! I can’t get a tan (redhead). Bring back those dingy wet dark days I’m accustomed to. I m glad some people can enjoy it though.
