To feel awful at telling my 7 year old to fuck off in these circumstances?

I am a single mum to 7 year old daughter, I have recently been diagnosed with diabetes (January 2021), I'm not even 30 and it's been a struggle getting used to everything.

Yesterday I'm not sure exactly what happened, but a few hours after eating I was just getting ready in a hurry and started to feel a hypo come on, I started shaking, sweating etc went into that dream like state. However, at the time I didn't really notice it was happening, it's really hard to explain.

Anyway my daughter then came up the stairs and I said 'do your teeth please' and she started moaning about doing her teeth. This infuriated me because why would she moan about doing her teeth? It's something that she literally has to do every day, does she really think moaning is going to get her out of it? I felt this overwhelming rage and said 'oh fuck off Jess'. She looked taken aback and said 'no need to swear, I was only kidding' and then did them.

I went down stairs and checked my blood, was having a hypo so got that sorted. I just feel so bad, I don't know what came over me. I'm usually a very calm person, have a great relationship with my daughter, a very calm and peaceful house. 'Fuck off' is not how we speak to each other.

I apologised to her and explained what happened and said it was no excuse and I will do better next time. She seems fine but I feel still awful all day today about it.

@Seeleyboo either that or your children are just bare face lying to you...which I think is more likely.

berryhead2013 · 18/07/2021 22:42

This is my sign that I'm going hypo my tolerance for bullshit is zero and I become mega bitch the. I check my bloods and eat jelly babies
You will learn it's all very new to you but next time......
And you cannot be held responsible for what you say or eat during a hypo
It's gonna be ok x

berryhead2013 · 18/07/2021 22:44

And I forgot to say tell your daughter why you got angry that it was low blood sugars then she might tell you to check if you are acting like a loony mine have done a few times my dad is also 7 x

Seeleyboo · 18/07/2021 22:45

But from what you are saying the OP does swear in front of her child. Clearly you feel this is an acceptable way of life and if i am weird so be it. Doesn't change they don't know what one is

berryhead2013 · 18/07/2021 22:45

@goddessofmischief it's not always that easy the amount of things that affect your blood sugar is unreal

tohaveitall · 18/07/2021 22:47

@Seeleyboo no...she will have heard it at school, at the park, in the street, on tv...and so what if she's heard her mum swear, if only we could all be as perfect as you. Utterly bizarre.

NiceGerbil · 18/07/2021 22:47

Christ almighty.

They've never seen a TV prog or cartoon with swearing allegiance? Or read s book with it?

Never seen or read anything with the phrase swear on my life?

Nothing? Ever???

The delivery company swore they delivered but they didn't.

I swear by fairy liquid?

They were sworn enemies?

Really?!!!

If they do not know the word then yes their vocab is lacking.

Seeleyboo · 18/07/2021 22:48

Happily send you my perfect parent manual.

tohaveitall · 18/07/2021 22:49

@Seeleyboo you do realise the OP was in the middle of a hypo when she swore?

NiceGerbil · 18/07/2021 22:52

Never heard the USA pledge of allegiance ever on the the tell? Totally unaware of biden being sworn in?

I mean I know we aren't American but it was all over the news.

Never read it on a newspaper front page or seen it on a book title?

Never taken them to museums etc which often have stuff about loyalty to one person or another...

NiceGerbil · 18/07/2021 22:52

I'm sure Seeley does!

NiceGerbil · 18/07/2021 22:53

Those kids are either being totally sheltered from the outside world or are not being honest. It's a really common word with loads of uses.

Seeleyboo · 18/07/2021 22:56

Why are you so invested in why my children don't know what a swear word is

tohaveitall · 18/07/2021 23:03

Just because of the way you judged the OP's daughter for knowing what a swear word is, I'm just pointing out that what is actually strange is the fact your children don't.

NiceGerbil · 18/07/2021 23:04

Because you said it was shocking that her child knew what it meant etc.

That's why.

NiceGerbil · 18/07/2021 23:10

You didn't say swear word. you said didn't know the word swear.

Another point.

Often around children adults will use other words

Sugar instead of shit, that type of thing.

From the child's point of view that is swearing - exclamation of dismay, or stubbing a toe etc.

My kids for example said omg a lot but stopped when they found out what it stands for (?!) as it is blasphemy. (I was Confused but whatever!).

The situation and intent are key- the actual words and phrases change around the place and through time.

What would the they call those words? Sugar/ fiddlesticks/ blimey / etc etc?

NiceGerbil · 18/07/2021 23:12

When we had scaffolders next door the children heard some colourful language!

Probably should have put ear defenders on them till the work was finished.

What does it say in the perfect parent manual to do?

MrsMillhouse · 18/07/2021 23:13

Oh OP, please do t feel guilty. When a friend takes a hypo he acts really out of character and like he’s drunk.

Please work with your daughter to explain what she should do if you take a hypo again xx

MrsMillhouse · 18/07/2021 23:19

@Seeleyboo are your kids home educated? Just find it a wee bit difficult to believe that at 7 they don’t know what swearing is.

DS has only discovered it’s a thing in the last year since starting school. He doesn’t swear ... but he knows a few of the words. We have had to have a word about him saying “oh my God” and “Holy cow” though as I hate to hear kids use religious words in that way.
