@Confiscatedpopit I think those objecting to the so-called Freedom Day in the main only want three things to remain- face coverings (especially on public transport), to continue working from home if you have done so for the last 18 months, and some social distancing.
None of which stop you going to a pub, a restaurant, cinema, on holiday in the UK at least, shopping etc. Leading a reasonable life.
As for back-pedalling, I expect some and the unnecessarily late decision on travel to/from France is the first of many. Government will make all the changes when it is difficult for parliament to scrutinise them or when Parliament is not sitting. Also timed to be as inconvenient to people in Scotland as much as possible (notice how the ending of the quarantine for people double vaccinated coincides with the return to school in Scotland mid-August).
As a customer you can have a ‘reasonable life’ in socially distanced cafes and pubs with table service. If you own or work somewhere having to operate at around 50% capacity, your life might be less reasonable.
There are two small independent cafes in my area which are still closed because they can’t make a profit with socially distanced tables. Another cafe in the city centre reopened and then closed again when it realised it couldn’t make a profit without commuters.
That’s already a significant number of staff on furlough, and risking unemployment, not to mention people working in nightclubs. Social distancing (and probably face coverings, in nightclubs) clearly have benefits, but posters who want them to remain often seem oblivious to the downsides.
