To think freedom from lockdown will be cancelled before Monday

I think there will be backpedalling on the lockdown lifting. Really pessimistic news today. We are being prepared. IMHO.

@JassyRadlett

For those thinking a double vax offers full protection think again .

Literally no one with any sense or reading ability thinks that.

But thank you for your contribution.

And I'm really sorry your son is still feeling unwell - hope he feels better soon.
Formaldeheidi · 16/07/2021 17:06

I dont think they will. I think they’re preparing us for winter though….

@JassyRadlett and @ChocBeforeCock sadly quite a few of my acquaintances,Jeremy Vine thought so too on his show last week Sadly , many , many people who are being told this in the media .

Thank you for your good wishes for my son.

@DaisyWaldron

I know more people with Covid at the moment then I did in the period before any of the previous lockdowns. DD's school has closed. Her extra curricular activities have been cancelled because the teachers are isolating. My team at work is affected for the first time . I've stocked up supplies for isolation/illness because it seems extremely likely right now.

I think the government will go ahead, but suspect they might do a panicky retreat after a couple of weeks, at the point where it will have gone on for too long to undo the damage easily. And blame it all on people who didn't use their "common sense" appropriately.

That's what they've done every time so far, isn't it? Stable doors and all.

I’d be really interested to see how many of these supporting lockdowns and masks etc are retired/ work in the public sector on a steady reliable income/ can work from home with no detriment to their pay. I think it’ll be massive correlation. Too little to worry about and charmed lives with no actual repercussions.

Those of us have had to work and get on with life from March now have no fear of this whatsoever. The ‘cures’ are far worse than the cause now, it’s absolutely ridiculous. Flu kills an enormous amount of people every year- we don’t socially isolate and bankrupt people because of it. The impact on mental health and children is a million times scarier than this virus to me.

I honestly think the world has gone mad. WHO/ SAGE/ the government have just constantly contradicted themselves since March of last year- yet you all still blindly follow whatever latest crap they spout and lecture others who just want to live life normally?

Unless you are CEV (then I have huge sympathy and I don’t know the solution to that other than massive financial compensation to them from the government) then you seriously need to get a grip and stop letting other people not live their lives. Stay in and stop being so selfish to those who want to give their kids a decent childhood (just as we had) and those who just want to enjoy life. We are only here once- this virus isn’t going to go away and yet we are all putting our lives on hold just for another week/month/ three months/ year. Pathetic.

@Confiscatedpopit I think those objecting to the so-called Freedom Day in the main only want three things to remain- face coverings (especially on public transport), to continue working from home if you have done so for the last 18 months, and some social distancing.

None of which stop you going to a pub, a restaurant, cinema, on holiday in the UK at least, shopping etc. Leading a reasonable life.

As for back-pedalling, I expect some and the unnecessarily late decision on travel to/from France is the first of many. Government will make all the changes when it is difficult for parliament to scrutinise them or when Parliament is not sitting. Also timed to be as inconvenient to people in Scotland as much as possible (notice how the ending of the quarantine for people double vaccinated coincides with the return to school in Scotland mid-August).

Backtracking is Boris's middle name.

He'll probably open up on Monday then close things down on Tuesday. Because of the science. 🙄

Confiscatedpopit · 17/07/2021 11:55

To be honest NewNortherner I can’t wait to burn my masks on Monday. To me they are pointless pieces of rags that most of us wear to stop the self-apppinted covid police in our communities having a go. It’s so obvious that so many people don’t wash them for months either so they are just gross full stop. The arrogance of some insisting that others wear them to appease their anxiety really annoys me.

YenneferOfBattenberg · 17/07/2021 12:13

I would be happy for things to stay as they are now. But I cannot face the thought of another hard lockdown. I also cannot see how that would be necessary, unless the vaccines aren't working, but all the evidence I have seen says that they are. Even if you catch Covid after a vaccination then there is a vanishingly small chance of getting seriously ill. While hospital admissions are slowly rising, the number of patients requiring ventilation is still very low.

Time for life to continue to go back to normal now IMO. We cannot go on living in fear forever. Extremely vulnerable people who haven't been / cannot be vaccinated should be isolating/protecting themselves. Those who can be vaccinated but have chosen not to should not be allowed into any non-essential places.
Covid is not going to just magically disappear altogether (or least not in a time frame that we can keep society tightly locked down for!) so we need to stop being scared and start finding a way to live our normal lives with it.

I don't disagree that the government are twats though, who have handled everything appallingly so far...so I totally understand the lack of faith in their abilities to make decisions. But I do think the one thing that they have got very right is the vaccination program. We ate doing that right and it is working.

As a customer you can have a ‘reasonable life’ in socially distanced cafes and pubs with table service. If you own or work somewhere having to operate at around 50% capacity, your life might be less reasonable.

There are two small independent cafes in my area which are still closed because they can’t make a profit with socially distanced tables. Another cafe in the city centre reopened and then closed again when it realised it couldn’t make a profit without commuters.

That’s already a significant number of staff on furlough, and risking unemployment, not to mention people working in nightclubs. Social distancing (and probably face coverings, in nightclubs) clearly have benefits, but posters who want them to remain often seem oblivious to the downsides.
