To think freedom from lockdown will be cancelled before Monday

I think there will be backpedalling on the lockdown lifting. Really pessimistic news today. We are being prepared. IMHO.

I agree with @Ihatefacemasks that's not way to love, it's not how we lived before until we were told to be scared.

Cooldryplace · 15/07/2021 06:10

I can't guarantee I'm safe any time I leave the house ever, or when I stay in for that matter.

As we know flu can be fatal for some people and vaccination isn't always effective, but presumably vulnerable groups do still carry on living. What's the point otherwise?

frumpety · 15/07/2021 06:35

It's time for us people with social lives, friends, hobbies and holidays booked to get on with it.

Holidays ? Been on one and due to go on another in a couple of weeks, both in the UK. The changes on the 19th have no impact on travel abroad, if anything, the Government seem to be adding to restrictions and if cases keep rising other countries may impose their own limitations to UK travellers.

lazylinguist · 15/07/2021 07:12

Do they want to be ill, then? Even if it leads to long covid or death? Not one of us can say it won't happen.

Not one of us can say we won't be seriously injured or killed when we go in a car, and yet we do this all the time. Life is full of risks.

kayteep · 15/07/2021 10:19

I think it will go ahead and then come September we will be back in lockdown again!

BajanB · 15/07/2021 12:16

I've just got off LNER train and the majority in the carriage didn't have masks on or had them under their chin and pulled them up when they got off. There was an announcement at every station that masks are to be worn unless exempt or for eating and drinking.
The 19th has come early on here.

jugOFpimms · 15/07/2021 13:39

the thing is if they keep back peddling no-one will take any notice ,its crazy kids off school isolating due to lateral flow tests that are not that accurate & yet we have had to watch wembley& wimbledon while no sports days ! I for one haven't gone out shopping properly as its not nice to keep your mask on so how will the economy be if we don't just get on with it; the vaccine was meant to be the way out.

SmokeyDevil · 15/07/2021 13:48

Nah he won't back pedal surely, he's risking a mutiny then.

Although I had a weird but lovely dream last night that he was voted out of power. Odd dream and wishful thinking, but still.. Grin

the80sweregreat · 15/07/2021 13:56

I can't believe it's been nearly two years since Boris Johnson became PM
If someone had given him a crystal ball about what would happen 6 months on , he would have run a mile.
People are saying to me that they will continue with the mask wearing in shops / public places etc.
I don't think people will ditch them completely and it'll be a 50/50 mixture of those that will and those that won't ( and never have! )
At least it won't feel weird wearing one as people are used to seeing them on people now.

Frazzled2207 · 15/07/2021 13:59

Who exactly are we being prepared by op?
Boris actually said at a speech this morning that “the worst of the pandemic is behind us”.
He’s in complete denial.
It will go ahead, mostly because backbench MP would not support any continuation of any restrictions.
However I suspect there will be a significant u turn in a few weeks

gardeninggirl68 · 15/07/2021 14:02

theres a heatwave due here in uk.....people will ditch them soon enough

and once they shop for the first time without a mask i doubt they will go back to wearing one through choice

already (since july/euros) customers wearing them in our stores has dropped to roughly 50/50

User135644 · 15/07/2021 14:09

They realise they shouldn't be going ahead but can't face the backlash, so have changed it to advice rather than law over things like masks.

claralara42 · 15/07/2021 20:55

Not one person I know wants to be restricted any more

Well duh. Nobody wanted to be restricted in the first place, did they? It wasn't done for shits and giggles.
But you are hardly restricted at all now anyway.

gardeninggirl68 · 15/07/2021 23:49

You are if forced to wear it all day everyday in a hot store

Thank his we are free in 3 days!

gardeninggirl68 · 15/07/2021 23:49

*god

Themeparklover · 15/07/2021 23:57

We need to, but then those who have protested will act like petulant uneducated children and kick off, as I said on another post, the government will reopen , cases will rise/deaths etc and it will give them reason to put us back in lockdown

TheReluctantPhoenix · 16/07/2021 06:51

@jugOFpimms,

Most schools have held sports days, just not with parents spectating.

TheReluctantPhoenix · 16/07/2021 06:56

Freedom has come early-for COVID.

It does seem absurd closing down school bubbles and making children isolate whist pubs are open and packed.

I doubt we are far from the natural r number now; very few meaningful mitigation measures in place.

We are allowing a virus free spread in a partially vaccinated population. In one sense, so far, so good (hospitalisations still very low and within our capacity). However, they are growing around 50% per week and, unless we reach herd immunity via infection fairly soon, we will have to lock down again.

Sunshinealligator · 16/07/2021 07:03

It should be, but it won't be.
I think we will be in lockdown before the end of the 6weeks hols.
My town has had just under 400 cases in the past 7 days. I've said to DD, anything you want to do, let's get out of the way before Monday.

The risk is smaller than it will be.

BlatantlyNameChanged · 16/07/2021 08:53

At which point these people will blame the more cautious people and say its their fault we're back in lockdown rather than looking to their own behaviour pre-and-post July 19th.

LemonRoses · 16/07/2021 09:00

They’ll stick with 19th to allow their own holidays - Johnson will probably join Historic Russian friends on the very nice LeGrad Bleu that is anchored off the Solent and have parties at our expense at Chequers.
Then we’ll have restrictions imposed towards end of August, beginning of September as the scale of this wave becomes evident.

This government is creating a global health risk knowingly and willingly, allowing perfect conditions for an ever more successful variant. One seems to be emerging in NE at moment, so suspect other countries will shortly stop travel from UK.

BlatantlyNameChanged · 16/07/2021 10:26

I've got a city break abroad booked for the end of August, so far it's been cancelled and rebooked three times, last night I got an email from the travel company telling me that it might not be able to go ahead and they're monitoring the situation.

I'm always of the opinion that some of the businesses might be more ' in the know' than we think. My son had a few things cancelled this year ( an open air festival etc) yet things like the tennis and the football went ahead etc. It is strange?
Snoozer11 · 16/07/2021 11:29

The schools closing for the summer will help to halt the spread.

66% of adults are fully vaccinated. Hospitalisations are increasing but not to the extent they were before vaccines, and deaths are at around 10% of the level they were at without vaccines.

If we lockdown in September, like so many seem to think we will, then frankly we will never be able to get back to normality.

Ylvamoon · 16/07/2021 11:33

Only one question:

At what point do all the pessimist think it's safe to open up?

keeping in mind that the economy cannot take much more
