There should be no England fans at final IMO

I cannot believe there is not more disgust at the actions of one (or more) English fan(s).

Aside from trying to cheat way to an England victory by distracting the goalkeeper during a penalty, lasers are phenomenally dangerous to eyes. The goalkeeper could have retinal damage.

I think a “lesser” nation would have been kicked out, but England won’t. But in my view the fans should be banned - there has to be consequences for criminal actions. Otherwise it will happen again.

Suspect I’ll be in the minority but it’s frankly embarrassing we have fans who do this.

I might be counting those finalists from memory on my fingers and toes though.

Germany
Italy
France
Spain
England
Czechoslovakia
Hungary
Sweden
The Netherlands
Croatia

Then for SA, it's Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.

Missed anyone?

Ratalie · 10/07/2021 19:47

Like I say, I agree with you the record is impressive.
Yeah I'm not arguing with you, just enjoying the football chat Grin

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/07/2021 20:20

I know shag all about football really but am a quizzer by hobby so remember stuff like that :o

MarshaBradyo · 10/07/2021 20:24

www.foxsports.com/soccer/fifa-world-cup/history

It feels like West Germany was ages ago it was and it wasn’t

But anyway every four years and it doesn’t take long to get through the century

Yes and it hosted according to the list so you have a good memory
MercyBooth · 10/07/2021 20:26

Maybe if there was a bit less obsession with Covid and a bit more focus on security the pointer would have been found on entry into the grounds.

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/07/2021 20:29

Ooh good bit of info to add to the mental filing cabinet, thank you!

Ratalie · 10/07/2021 20:36

MarshaBradyo
That just lists the winners, not the finalists, which is why I also have Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Sweden and Croatia. Don't thiiiiiink I've missed any, although I did lump West Germany and Germany together.

Ratalie · 10/07/2021 20:38

Although I did miss the Netherlands from the above post (if not my original list)

Is that from memory?!
ilovesooty · 10/07/2021 21:01

Greece and Denmark should be on that list.

Ratalie · 10/07/2021 21:02

No that's the Euros, not the World Cup.

Didnt miss any Grin

I wouldn't be able to list all Euros finalists though.

mrsorms · 10/07/2021 21:19

So, if football is truly an international game, why do (some) England fans chant 'It's coming home!' ? I realise the annoying song from 1996 has been resurrected, and I know there is some credible claim that league football began in these isles, however, the game itself is much older than that.

Isn't the claim that football is somehow England's game rather arrogant?

jasjas1973 · 10/07/2021 21:26

Maybe what should happen is the UK puts its house in order instead of saying we aren't as bad as the ultras in Russia etc

The pic of the German child was shared widely, so clearly not a small minority, for what ever reason, folk didn't seem to be able to have any sort of empathy with her or the family.

Didn't fans boo a test event as well, even though there were only a few 1000s chosen people in the game?

Its not helped when people like Patel get involved and say taking the knee is wrong and its ok to boo, she is giving licence to poor behavior.

Though she is now a fan, so perhaps she'd like to withdraw her previous advice?

Sorry, I misread - thought it was a Euros list.

What a load of bollocks!! It was shared so widely because people were shocked by it and were sharing it with comments showing their disgust A justgiving page raised over £30,000 by fans who were disgusted and wanted to show other countries fans that we were embarrassed by it. To try and say the majority of England fans found any pleasure from that just isn't true!

Its a song that's song on the terraces FFS

I support West Ham - we used to sing to our former Czech goalkeeper 'my name is Mikloško I come from near Moscow - not exactly geographically accurate but whom cares? its a terrace chant not a statement to be proven in a court of law

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 10/07/2021 23:40

Why do I get the feeling that @mrsorms is a regular writer to Points Of View?

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/07/2021 23:52

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Lions

Unlike other football songs, the lyrics express the disappointment of being a football fan.

As explained by Baddiel and Skinner last night on The Last Leg (but I rather suspect that @mrsorms doesnt lower herself to watch something so low brow Hmm )

Its the absolute opposite of self congratulatory arrogance.

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/07/2021 23:59

Interesting fact......it made the German charts too!!

The Britpop phenomenon was at its peak in 1996, and the Lightning Seeds were one of its leading acts, so their involvement gave the song very wide appeal. It reached number one in the singles chart, and as England progressed to the semi-finals, stadiums around the country echoed to the sound of fans singing the song after English victories over Scotland, the Netherlands and Spain. It was so popular that even other teams liked it. England faced Germany in the semi-finals, and Jürgen Klinsmann said later that the Germans were singing the song themselves on the way to the stadium, and the German team and the crowd sang the song as they paraded the trophy on the Römer balcony in Frankfurt. The single as a result even made number 49 on the German Singles Chart.[15] The song was later sung by Germany fans during their team's first appearance at the new Wembley in 2007[

snoin · 11/07/2021 00:05

The behaviour of many English fans has been a total disgrace. Let's hope they lose later today.

Is anyone actually surprised by it though? Sadly, it's exactly the behaviour I'd have expected from them.
