I just don’t get all the fuss about stupid football

So I’m sitting in bed about go to sleep and all I can hear outside is cheering, horns beeping people shouting etc because England are through to the final. It means nothing to me. Just a massive money spinning industry.

Am I honestly the only person who doesn’t give a flying fig about it all? I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

Sure I will be totally flamed for this, but I honestly wish it would just all go away.

Also, as a side note, it’s the Euros but wonder how many England supporters actually voted for Brexit 🤔 Or is that actually why people are so invested in it?

What does "football coming home" even mean.

It's a lot of fuss, I don't care about it but I don't think less of anyone who does

Woops didn't mean to quote!

ivfbabymomma1 · 08/07/2021 20:05

What's a sheeple?! 😳

& guess what? ITS COMING HOME 😇

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/07/2021 20:05

@MrJollyLivesNextDoor

Wonder if OP will come back and explain 'the wider function of football in society. The big picture'.

Wonder which sports are acceptable for the masses to watch...Tennis? Athletics? Golf?

Do tell OP

I've been watching cricket today, I wonder if that's acceptable. I'm a member of the Barmy Army though so possibly not!

Bit effing harsh, OP. Lighten up!

I have no interest in football at all but, after the year everyone has had with COVID, can completely understand why people are excited. Everyone needs some good news.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 08/07/2021 20:18

Oh what about darts OP had some right cracking nights out there

It's a reference to the fact that football is believed to have originated in England, made famous by the Three Lions song.

It does have a nice ring to it. And it makes me laugh that some Italian fans are changing it to "to Rome".

You must be a barrel of laughs at parties

Nailed it.

DynamoKev · 08/07/2021 20:36

England even

SamW98 · 08/07/2021 20:52

@Mountainpika

Bored by all the coverage on the news. There are far more important things happening in the world than a football match. Sport should have its own channel and news so it doesn't mean programmes we do want to watch are cancelled. Fed up with all of it.
Outside of major tournaments which take place for a month every 2 years, football does have its own dedicated channels which have to be paid for and so most of the time its very easy to avoid
rooarsome · 08/07/2021 20:56

I can't muster any enthusiasm for football at all and find it incredibly boring. That doesn't mean i begrudge others celebrating, having fun and being proud of their team.
Relax and let people do what makes them happy

Song came out for Euros 1996 which was first time since 1966 it had been played in England...according to wiki its to do with that.
Smokeahontas · 08/07/2021 21:01

Yes, on a planet of six billion people, you’re the only one. You’re special. Have a Pom Bear Bear

LagunaBubbles · 08/07/2021 21:15

don't generally watch cycling, gymnastics etc but I do when England are competing in the Olympics etc

And you probably don't even care how offensive, and lazy that is considering there's more to GB than England.

UrbanRambler · 08/07/2021 21:41

I do sympathise with OP to a point - it's maddening to be kept awake by noisy/drunk people, no matter what the cause of their partying is. Also, I don't get why some people are so over invested as to whether England win or not - after all, it's just a game. OTOH, it's rare for the England side to do so well, so I don't begrudge them their fun, even if I find it a bit tedious at times.

I'll tune in to watch the second half, and would like to see England win, but either way I'll be glad when it's over, as the constant TV coverage and hype over it has got on my nerves at times.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 21:46

The never ending rolling news doesn't help as they fill up the time now visiting people to ask them why they put up England flags or ' who do you want to win ? ' type questions.

It is mind numbing.

My tv is off now till Sunday!!

Bythemillpond · 08/07/2021 22:09

Apart from one news report today I haven’t seen anything on it.

WhatAShilohPitt · 08/07/2021 22:34

Oh get over yourself. I think you sound like a pompous arse for that football fans have boring lives compared to you and are all sheeple. Nobody needs you to feel sorry for them. They were the ones out celebrating with their friends and feeling joy while you were whinging on mumsnet!!!

Also, Euros have NOTHING to do with Brexit. The continent of Europe still exists, you know.

WhatAShilohPitt · 08/07/2021 22:34

^for saying

Mothership4two · 09/07/2021 04:33

@igelkott2021

at grassroots level you get the "win at all costs" mentality and lack of inclusiveness

My DH as coached football at "grassroots level" for 15 years and this statement is rubbish and at complete odds with reality

Inkanta · 09/07/2021 05:05

I'm enjoying the whole thing. and good for our country - bringing us all together cheering on our team.

It's coming it's coming home .. football's coming home! Smile

KeepSmiling89 · 09/07/2021 06:51

@TheRosesOfSuccess yes, I do feel the same about Wimbledon. Just feels like all the COVID rules go out the window for the sake of sporting events...

Drovememad · 09/07/2021 07:12

@LagunaBubbles calm yourself please, as my kids would say take a chill pill!

It was a slip up as we were talking about England at the time, the point was about not watching the sport usually.

No offence meant, unlike the people on this post with the football followers are all stupid, yobs etc.
