I just don’t get all the fuss about stupid football

So I’m sitting in bed about go to sleep and all I can hear outside is cheering, horns beeping people shouting etc because England are through to the final. It means nothing to me. Just a massive money spinning industry.

Am I honestly the only person who doesn’t give a flying fig about it all? I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

Sure I will be totally flamed for this, but I honestly wish it would just all go away.

Also, as a side note, it’s the Euros but wonder how many England supporters actually voted for Brexit 🤔 Or is that actually why people are so invested in it?

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

It's so boring when people do the whole "what is football? What is a game?".

Leoni Liars!

Isn't it just

All the pretence of ignorance to make themselves feel superior when actually they just look stupid

hayley037 · 08/07/2021 11:03

OP do you let your own children participate in sport or is it just football that you hate? Do you hate the Olympics for example and see people following or being interested in that as sheeple too?

Youdiditanyway · 08/07/2021 11:03

I’m half French and my Dad always backs France in tournaments so I usually tend to follow them rather than England despite being born and raised here. I don’t really care much for football though but I fully appreciate why people are so excited right now and I personally think it’s a nice boost after the past 18 months.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 08/07/2021 11:06

I get there some people don't like football. And. I get that it must be annoying if you're trying to sleep and being kept awake by people celebrating something you don't care about. But to be so blissfully ignorant about a major sporting event and the significance of an England win .... scary that we allow people with so little awareness to vote.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 08/07/2021 11:07

@hayley037 aw that brought a tear to my eye it did

MolyHolyGuacamole · 08/07/2021 11:14

@douliket I also heard that England have never,in fact won the euros so people around the works are making a mockery of the English fans singing "it's coming home" because it never was at your home in the first place.

This makes no sense. They're saying 'it's coming home' not 'it's coming^^ home again'. What a weird argument

WalkingOnTheCracks · 08/07/2021 11:16

You're not unreasonable to not be interested.

You are unreasonable to call it stupid just because you're not interested in it.

You are unreasonable to use the word 'sheeple', which, ironically, is a kind of mindless conformance to a mistaken idea of non-conformance.

You are unreasonable to assume that anyone interested in the football has an otherwise boring life. Just as it would be unreasonable of me to assume that your lack of interest in football, and your contempt for those that are interested, is the expression of some deeper and unresolved personality issue that you really ought to get seen to. Neither of us have enough evidence to go on, do we?

And lastly, I think it's quite unreasonable to get so uptight about having to share the planet with other people. I mean, I get it. Sometimes I feel the same way. Though we may disagree about the people we'd rather not share the planet with.

You know what I can’t stand, it’s people acting woke and thinking that they are the only people that can see the big picture of the world.

iBrows · 08/07/2021 11:21

You were angrily posting on Mumsnet - they were drinking, celebrating and having a great time with friends.

I know where I’d rather be!

midsomermurderess · 08/07/2021 11:34

It's football, the game, widely said to have been invented her, that is coming home not specifically from this tournament, you ninny.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 08/07/2021 11:35

@douliket I also heard that England have never,in fact won the euros so people around the works are making a mockery of the English fans singing "it's coming home" because it never was at your home in the first place.

The 'it' in question isn't the Euro Cup. It's football itself - the game, the concept. And it's coming home because the game was invented here, and has spread across the world.

There's a bit of a clue in the lyric.

"Football's coming home."

I mean, quite difficult to see how they could have made that plainer.

midsomermurderess · 08/07/2021 11:35

'Acting woke'. How can someone write that without cringing.

ilovesooty · 08/07/2021 12:20

I don't understand how people using the word woke even expect to be taken seriously.
BlueCupOrangeCup · 08/07/2021 12:27

I don't really care for football tbh. I can see how this is significant though and it's nice to see people happy even if it's not something I particularly care about. I'm happy for the team, for other people and everyone involved.

I don't have a limit on how much good news I welcome in life, there's always room for more...so I will join in. ☺️

If that makes me a sheeple...sounds good to me 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ellpellwood · 08/07/2021 12:31

I want to throw all the OPs like this in a massive bin and slam the lid on.

LolaButt · 08/07/2021 12:45

Such snobbery around football.

Prince William seemed pretty happy to be there though.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 08/07/2021 12:53

Dont know how true it is but just read that somewhere in the region of 27 million watched the match. So I guess its safe to say plenty of people were interested

Snaketime · 08/07/2021 12:54

I'm with you OP, I can't stand it.

igelkott2021 · 08/07/2021 12:56

The "significance of an England win" is everything that's wrong with it!

If it could just be seen as sport, that would be great. I was as pleased as the next person when the GB team did well in the medals table at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. Same with the GB swimming team at this year's European swimming championship.

But football is another beast entirely. It takes over, it's very hard to avoid, things are cancelled so people can watch it, and it's treated like a substitute battle in a war. That's at national level, at club level you get nasty tribalism like between Rangers and Celtics and at grassroots level you get the "win at all costs" mentality and lack of inclusiveness.

It's all completely over the top. I much prefer athletics (which has its own problems with drugs and the shoes, but generally is a much nicer sport to be involved with).

igelkott2021 · 08/07/2021 12:57

And that proves my point "mockery". It's SPORT! Why would you "mock" anyone. Anyway, those people don't understand it comes from the song written for the 1996 tournament.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 08/07/2021 12:59

It's coming home!🦁🦁🦁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⚽️❤

vintageglass · 08/07/2021 13:08

I agree with you 100%. I'm in Italy so we had the same noise the night before until well after midnight, no respect for people sleeping, fireworks scaring pets. The fans drove around town round peeping their horns. My DH hates it too thank goodness!

Somethingsnappy · 08/07/2021 13:30

I'm not really interested in football either, but I liked listening to the cheering last night.

drumandthebass · 08/07/2021 13:30

Some people just hate to see other people enjoying themselves. You sound absolutely joyless tbh and I feel sorry for your friends and family
