So I’m sitting in bed about go to sleep and all I can hear outside is cheering, horns beeping people shouting etc because England are through to the final. It means nothing to me. Just a massive money spinning industry.

Am I honestly the only person who doesn’t give a flying fig about it all? I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

Sure I will be totally flamed for this, but I honestly wish it would just all go away.

Also, as a side note, it’s the Euros but wonder how many England supporters actually voted for Brexit 🤔 Or is that actually why people are so invested in it?

Oh LOL OP, what a superior being you are! You don't look like a sneering, patronising, posturing idiot here, at all. No siree Grin

CakeWarrior · 08/07/2021 13:36

@BumbleFlump I totally agree. Tbh i wish we were out. I cant fathom why 60,000 people can pack into a stadium and spread covid - yet we not allowed to go to sons school sports day! My husband starts work at 4am each day, im on theatre on call and often have phone calls early hours. And all i can hear are drunken yobs at god knows what time shrieking and shouting outside with no consideration. By all means celebrate at home - but screaming in the street at 1am? Honest to god i will be so glad when its sunday. All you ever see in the news are people brawling because they support different teams. I think its just a yob/thug sport now. You dont see that behaviour for F1/cricket/rugby/motogp.

TheRosesOfSuccess · 08/07/2021 13:40

But football is another beast entirely. It takes over, it's very hard to avoid, things are cancelled so people can watch it, and it's treated like a substitute battle in a war. That's at national level, at club level you get nasty tribalism like between Rangers and Celtics and at grassroots level you get the "win at all costs" mentality and lack of inclusiveness.

Hard to avoid? GrinGrinGrin The Euros are once every 4 years, as is the World Cup. Apart from this season, due to a one off agreement because of covid, no live Premiership or League football is shown on terrestrial TV. How on earth is it hard to avoid 3 or 4 weeks every 2 years?

Tennis on the other hand is shown live every year on 2 terrestrial channels followed by highlights programmes.

It's a national event. Like the Olympics, except many more people enjoy it, because it's something many of us also participate in or watch live on a regular basis.

As for lack of inclusivity, have you actually seen the England team? They aren't all white and middle class you know. Gareth Southgate is a fantastic role model. And women's and girls football is thriving. Grassroots football keeps youngsters fit and outdoors all year round. What's wrong with that?

@JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil

It’s coming home!

Remain voter who doesn’t watch club football but loves Euros and World Cup!!!

Roll on Sunday!!!!

Totally agree OP. For those who are genuinely into football the rest of the time I do get and understanding the excitement in it for them. For everyone else though- nope.

Herecomesspring1 · 08/07/2021 13:53

It's coming home.

KeepSmiling89 · 08/07/2021 13:54

I agree OP. These tournaments and everything just cause disruption (TV schedules to name one) and bring out extreme sides to people (both bad and good unfortunately).
What's most worrying is the lack of restrictions re COVID. I know we're moving closer to 'normality' but the behaviour of people attending the matches has been appalling in some cases and it just feels like we'll be taking ANOTHER step back if the number of cases goes up again.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 08/07/2021 13:56

@vintageglass

I agree with you 100%. I'm in Italy so we had the same noise the night before until well after midnight, no respect for people sleeping, fireworks scaring pets. The fans drove around town round peeping their horns. My DH hates it too thank goodness!
Oh, is football a big thing it Italy? Are they any good at it? I ask merely out of idle interest....
the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 13:59

I dread the Olympics being on as i haven't any interest in most of the sport that is featured.
I watched a bit of the London Olympics, but only to see Mo Farrah and a few others.
I did a lot of cleaning up the house those four weeks as there was nothing else on tv to watch!
I'm not into sport generally , watched the football , but I'm not a massive fan of it
If you really hate all sport , this year is hell !!

I think it's really lovely that the farther they've made it the more tourists are joining in.

just because people didn't watch every single game at the group stage (even I missed one or two) it doesn't mean they can't now get involved.

Better late than never!
Even if they just want to see what the fuss is about, even if it's just dawning on them now that this Sunday is gonna be very special, even if they just want England to lose - it doesn't matter!
The more the merrier.
And they might just for the first time see & understand why football is The Beautiful Game!

Wineisrequired · 08/07/2021 14:07

Blimey sounds like the fun police have been round your house. I’m not really a football fan but just seeing people celebrate is an amazing thing after the crap year we’ve just had. Not sure where brexit comes into it .

So you HAVE to be into club football to want to support your home country in a tournament?

Really?

I don't generally watch cycling, gymnastics etc but I do when England are competing in the Olympics etc.

Note to self, you have no right unless you watch these sports all the time!

DoucheCanoe · 08/07/2021 14:13

"England" don't compete in the Olympics.

The athletes are from the home nations and represent Team GB!

Drovememad · 08/07/2021 14:17

@DoucheCanoe the sentiment is the same 🙄

I think you are confusing Team GB and England . England don’t compete in the Olympics Team GB do.

Maybe the 'sheeple' have always followed football. Maybe people are using it as an excuse to celebrate after a shitty time. Who knows? I'm glad everyone has different interests- and I try not to be mean about people who don't share mine
HOkieCOkie · 08/07/2021 14:57

I’m a England fan and a LFC fan and I voted brexit

Biker47 · 08/07/2021 15:48

You mean someone who's life is so boring they have to come onto an internet forum to tell everyone about how they're so superior that they don't like a particular past time a lot of people do happen to enjoy, that boring a life you mean?

FakeColinCaterpillar · 08/07/2021 15:51

I grew up in a very male dominated household. Almost everything revolved around ALL sports. Literally didn’t matter what it was, they watched it, talked about it and read about it.
I hate all of it now. I’m so bored to tears by sports and football.

The thing I hate is people telling me I should care and telling me what’s going on. I don’t expect others to be interested in things I’m interested in.

I’m waiting for the texts about it from BIL (not English) who won’t be able to understand how I am not enthralled by every single second of it.

Do you feel the same about Wimbledon with regard to the annual disruption of TV schedules? Or the crowds at Wimbledon, or on Henman hill/Murray whatever it's called? Particularly when the roof is closed so it becomes an indoor venue?

Wonder if OP will come back and explain 'the wider function of football in society. The big picture'.

Wonder which sports are acceptable for the masses to watch...Tennis? Athletics? Golf?

Do tell OP
