So I’m sitting in bed about go to sleep and all I can hear outside is cheering, horns beeping people shouting etc because England are through to the final. It means nothing to me. Just a massive money spinning industry.

Am I honestly the only person who doesn’t give a flying fig about it all? I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

Sure I will be totally flamed for this, but I honestly wish it would just all go away.

Also, as a side note, it’s the Euros but wonder how many England supporters actually voted for Brexit 🤔 Or is that actually why people are so invested in it?

There’s always ‘that’ person that never gets invited to parties/BBQ’s and wonders why …….

Davros · 08/07/2021 10:01

@jasminetea22

You've got to hold and give But do it at the right time You can be slow or fast But you must get to the line They'll always hit you and hurt you Defend and attack There's only one way to beat them Get 'round the back Catch me if you can 'Cause I'm the England man And what you're looking at Is the master plan We ain't no hooligans This ain't a football song Three lions on my chest I know we can't go wrong
Nah, that's the John Barnes rap. Nothing to do with G&S

@Nietzschethehiker

Oh dear, I realise you think you are sounding edgy and intelligent but just a reminder if you think using the word Sheeple about anything is anything other than simply a facade of intelligence rather than the real thing you are highlighting your ignorance. Youa re attempting to be superior and in fact making yourself the exact opposite.

Yes yes, everyone has heard the theories about football being similar to TV and the opiate of the masses, blah blah. The only people who think this are too uninformed to understand societies use of football to replicate longstanding established tribal interactions. The same way we use other things. Humans have a beautiful way of adding complexity into something that you don't expect.

Forgetting whether it is any of that , because its got less than nothing to do with you what other people choose to celebrate and only the ignorant think it has anything to do with their other life choices. It is simply nice to see people celebrating.

Football isn't particularly my thing. Nor is it DP's. However it has been a nice sign of normality. We both smiled and commented that seeing the celebrations outside the pubs, people smiling and looking forward to something made us smile and feel happier.

I grinned when I heard the cheering last night. I wasn't watching and DP was in bed because its been a busy week. But it was lovely, at one point all we heard were ambulances. Constantly. If you cannot see that hearing cheering and celebration over the ambulances is anything but a good thing the issue is not with other people, it's with you.

You don't have to be a football fan but ot doesn't make you superior to sniff at it. It highlights you as attempting to appear unformed and philosophical and making it glaringly obvious you are neither.

Perfect post

I'm not much of a football fan but my 16 year old DS is and he's enjoying every minute of the tournament and after a dreadful year being in and out of school, struggling with anxiety through and after the last lockdown and worrying that he will always go through life with the stigma of being the year that didn't take GCSE's, its wonderful to see him so happy again

Its another few days - suck it up OP

TheRosesOfSuccess · 08/07/2021 10:07

@Originaltiles

Football is a distraction because most people’s lives are actually quite miserable....a temporary distraction from the massive rent, bills, mortgage etc that people have to pay. It’s like a drug. Temporary high. That’s why I used the term “sheeple” because people don’t get the wider function of football in society. The big picture.

Utter bollocks

Quite.

I assume the OP doesnt realise that football had been played in leagues since the 1800s. Mortgages were probably a bit lower then Grin

I'd love to hear what the OP considers is the wider function of football in society, you know, the one we're all missing, and also more about her big picture.

OldTinHat · 08/07/2021 10:07

Ooh I bet you're fun at a party! No, wait, you probably don't go to parties or pubs or anywhere really because those are for boring sheeples.

It's coming home, its coming home, football's coming home!!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 08/07/2021 10:09

I bet that he same people who hate football & fans so much are the same sanctimonious people who preach tolerance.

of course they never meant it as a two-way street.
they just want others to accept their weird unreasonabless so they go & cry to mummy "boohooo someone was mean to me, make them stop"

pathetic.
you are the problem so stop with the hate already

Bovrilly · 08/07/2021 10:12

@Lisamonwesaa

I’m English and can’t stand football . I just hate the destruction that comes along with it. Wonder how many arrests were made tonight.
Here you go. There were about 60,000 in the crowd. Sorry your idea of destructive fans didn't materialise.

"20 arrests have been made by officers for a number of offences including common assault, public order and assault on police," Met Police said on Twitterr_.

derxa · 08/07/2021 10:15

Oh OP . I'm a massive football fan. I'm Scottish and don't support England but this tournament has been fantastic. Stop being so miserable. -It's not coming home-

Parky04 · 08/07/2021 10:23

First time in 18 months that I have seen my DC happy. He watched the footy with mates at the pub. He was a bit tipsy, laughing and very talkative (barely said a word in the last 18 months). The game last night was more important than just the result.

Flapflap1974 · 08/07/2021 10:25

Gosh I’m not even English (DH is) and I’m happy England is in final. Life has been so miserable so I’m happy this happening !

Davros · 08/07/2021 10:27

I can't believe that so many people don't realise that "it's coming home" refers to the fact that football was invented here. You all need to watch one of the best films ever made, Mike Bassett England Manager. He is being harassed in a press conference about how useless the England football team is and he says "do you know what? We invented football. Well I'm gonna go out there and I'm gonna bring it back". I won't spoil it with what happens but, if you haven't seen it you MUST before Sunday.

Steeple? You are U and very rude for that alone.

I assume it makes you feel superior? Well, trust me, you're not

Poolbridge · 08/07/2021 10:28

OP, I really very genuinely don’t know what the EUROs are, nor understand the significance of a win here. It’s lost on me, but I do get the impression from some news reporting it’s seen to be an important tournament.

You are not alone. It’s lost on me.

Livpool · 08/07/2021 10:29

There are lots of things I have no interest in - Wimbledon, soaps and crafts for example. I couldn't care less that other people enjoy these things.

You sound fun OP 😂

Backhills · 08/07/2021 10:33

Isn't it lovely we're all different. I don't "get" spa days....or shopping as a leisure pursuit...or cut flowers.

I don't know how anyone could have seen the atmosphere in that stadium last night and not felt a little joy though.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 08/07/2021 10:34

@Davros I know it was a joke

football is so not just a game.

You don't know what the European Football Championship is? Or understand a match being won?
Furries · 08/07/2021 10:54

@CorianderBee 😂. Hope his head is ok today!

Furries · 08/07/2021 10:54

@trappedsincesundaymorn - you might want to double-check your work schedule, as the final isn’t on Saturday!

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 08/07/2021 10:55

It's so boring when people do the whole "what is football? What is a game?".

Leoni Liars!

Sunnyday321 · 08/07/2021 10:55

I'm with the op

Speechless.

midsomermurderess · 08/07/2021 11:00

You must be an imagination void if you really, really don't get it.

Bovrilly · 08/07/2021 11:00

😂😂 Which news reporting gives you the impression that it's not an important tournament?
