So I’m sitting in bed about go to sleep and all I can hear outside is cheering, horns beeping people shouting etc because England are through to the final. It means nothing to me. Just a massive money spinning industry.

Am I honestly the only person who doesn’t give a flying fig about it all? I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

Sure I will be totally flamed for this, but I honestly wish it would just all go away.

Also, as a side note, it’s the Euros but wonder how many England supporters actually voted for Brexit 🤔 Or is that actually why people are so invested in it?

Wonder which sports are acceptable for the masses to watch...Tennis? Athletics? Golf?

I bet rugger is one.

derxa · 08/07/2021 17:45

I watch any sport that is on. Tennis, cricket, football, golf... To make it political is ridiculous in my book. The bandwagoning of this tournament by politicians is sickening. Johnson, Sunak, Starmer, Sturgeon, Dawn Butler, Jess Phillips, etc etc They can all just fuck off.

PotassiumChloride · 08/07/2021 17:48

Can somebody please consign the word “sheeple” to the deepest darkest pit in hell and cover it over with reinforced concrete.

Absolutely. Anyone who works with actual sheep knows that they are the most non compliant bloody animals possible.

Oh yes.

It's only boisterous fun when the hooray Henry types from West London smash bars up and drink each others piss and vomit for their rugger club initiations.

Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and North Macedonia - none of whom are part of the EU - also played in the tournament. Silly point.

Very true. Football is an escape from the shit that is politics at the moment. For 90 minutes at a time

Yep. Totally unreasonable. So you don’t like something that others do. That’s OK but you don’t need take to expose such philistinism (it isn’t stupid).

No there are lots of people who don’t like football but you are ignorant to suggest that people who like it are sheeple with boring lives - you sound like a teenager losing an argument.

YABVU to not understand that Brexit was about the EU. The EUROs is a football competition and not linked the EU!

Newrumpus · 08/07/2021 18:09

OP - are you and your neighbour in the UK? You do realise that the UK is still part of Europe? So suggesting that your neighbour won’t breathe the same air as someone from Europe makes no sense. The EU is not the same thing as Europe and Europeans.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 08/07/2021 18:15

The "significance of an England win" is everything that's wrong with it!

Historic sporting achievement is 'everything that's wrong with it'? I give up!

LizzieW1969 · 08/07/2021 18:15

YABU for using that totally irritating non-word ‘sheeple’ regardless of anything else.

I’m totally uninterested in football usually, but even I’m getting into the excitement now, as are my DDs of 12 and 9, who are usually obsessed with you-tube and roblox!! (My DH is a keen football fan so no surprise where he’s concerned! 🤣)

Roll on the final. I think we’ll lose to Italy, though.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 08/07/2021 18:22

I dont watch football. But living next to a pub saves me having to. I hear every shout or groan, it can be quite entertaining. There was a group of lads shouting into the pub last night, asking how it was going, presumably because they were under 21.
Then, to my amazement, even though its coming home, very few people were noisy. I have a feeling it will be twice as noisy on Sunday.
I quite like the noise. Nearly 2 years of silence at midnight onwards was depressing.

Babygotblueyes · 08/07/2021 19:05

People need some fun and a chance to feel in it with others. I get that. Like you, I couldn't care less about the football but am amazed at how many people still want to talk to me about it. I let them, since it seems important to them but really don't care.

LizzieW1969 · 08/07/2021 19:19

As for Brexit, as has been said the Euros have nothing to do with the EU. Switzerland have never been in the EU, and yet they reached the last 16 of the championships this year.

Mountainpika · 08/07/2021 19:20

Bored by all the coverage on the news. There are far more important things happening in the world than a football match. Sport should have its own channel and news so it doesn't mean programmes we do want to watch are cancelled. Fed up with all of it.

EeeByeGummieBear · 08/07/2021 19:23

@BumbleFlump

Football is a distraction because most people’s lives are actually quite miserable....a temporary distraction from the massive rent, bills, mortgage etc that people have to pay. It’s like a drug. Temporary high. That’s why I used the term “sheeple” because people don’t get the wider function of football in society. The big picture.
You could use that argued about many things. What's the point of anything? Why take an interest? Is it all just a distraction from us being shafted by the elite? Or we could find enjoyment in our lives, and meaning in what we do, thus living happy, meaningful lives. Anyway, I always thought it was religion that was supposed to be the opiate of the people, not football
LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 08/07/2021 19:26

If England got to finals every now and then they would be less fuss...except it hasn't happened. First final in 55 years!!

There are plenty of programmes I don’t want to watch. Which channel should they be consigned to?
willstarttomorrow · 08/07/2021 19:34

Well I am not into football but late DH was. I do not think it is a huge stretch to understand why lots of people are happy. It is very nice to see people happy, some are idiots, most are just happy after 18 shite months. It is a few weeks and then it will all be over.

earsup · 08/07/2021 19:38

Boring...my nephew was playing once for a first divion team and i got so bored of hearing about it all the time...then he got an injury and was just discarded by the team....a retired grey hound gets better treatment.

TSSDNCOP · 08/07/2021 19:49

Ah but @LizzieW1969 a bored, but trying to sound clever mind can go:

England fan ->Brexit voter ->Racist

It's not so fulfilling to instead go:

Person pleased England are in a final for the first time in 55 years, and enjoying it -> democracy whether or not you agree -> happy to rub along with all folk

PlacidPenelope · 08/07/2021 19:56

The most participated in, watched and supported sport in the world is football, estimates range between 3.5 billion and 4 billion people which is half the population of the entire planet.

That's a hell of a lot of people to be describing insultingly as 'sheeple' and considering it is a way out of dire poverty and hideous circumstances in many parts of the world it is a disgusting way to refer to them.

EeeByeGummieBear · 08/07/2021 19:57

For those who are confused by 'It's coming home'
As PP have said, the modern game was invented in England

Also, the song was actually about football coming home - written for the 1996 Euros which England hosted. It wasn't about winning, in fact the song is mostly about England losing. Grin

Yeah more to do with that.. First time since 1996 had been hosted in England..so would've come home..except not
