What changes would you bring in?

What would you get rid of/implement?

Let's hear it - I'm intrigued :)

I never quite understand how things work when the Daily Mail nicks content from MN. Is it not automatically copyrighted by MN as soon as its published (i.e. when we click 'post')? How would the DM react if MN lifted large parts of one of their stories (whether originating in-house or lifted)? Or does it hinge on a 'fair use' policy, if they only quote below a certain percentage of the thread content? Or does MN get a bunce come to an agreement with the DM?

ablutiions · 01/07/2021 06:07

@Mia184

I’d keep some of the fake posts and move them to a section called „Creative writing“ or something like that. Some of them are really well written and lots of advice given there is great.
This is genius.
Somuddled · 01/07/2021 06:51

I'd encourage more cat photos. Lots and lots more.

GiantWingedWaspMoth · 01/07/2021 06:58

*The MNHQ gaslighting members over the 1000 posts per page thing is just bizarre. They did the same thing over the ‘hide thread’ button and I honestly thought I was losing my mind for a while.

I used to have 1000 posts per page. This suddenly disappeared overnight without me changing anything*

I'm so surprised at this. I have both the 'hide this thread' and 'see all posts'. Surely I'm not the only one?

SoapboxFox · 01/07/2021 07:03

Ban replies which are just 'because' followed by one word.

Because Covid.
Because Brexit.
etc.

Auto-delete baby name posts which say 'James sprang to mind' when OP is looking for a boy's middle name.

drspouse · 01/07/2021 07:05

@SimonJT

Require all users to prove who they are via ID before they are allowed to post again, users who refuse have their account deleted.

Name changing banned.

Racism taken seriously by the moderation team, one strike and you’re out.

I post under several names for good reason. I know you're an adopter too so hopefully you can understand this!

Somuddled for President of MN! I'd vote for you. (Twice even, if I could find a way to game the system.)

I can see those things. Sounds like the '1000 posts' has changed name to something more accurate. Details of the view may possibly vary according to browser I suppose.
ShitPoetryClub · 01/07/2021 08:39

If they stopped everyone name changing, MN would have to admit that it only has 219 members Grin

🤣🤣

and that includes the ginguzzlers in MN tower

ErrolTheDragon · 01/07/2021 09:34

Namechanging serves a useful function on MN (as well as for fun).

And conversely, some users not namechanging frequently (as per another suggestion) is important to building support communities.

However, registering with ID in the first place might be a good idea. When MN was created, you couldn't just roll out throwaway email addresses, and most IP addresses were static. So I don't think there was the same problem of malicious registrations and PBPs reappearing.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 01/07/2021 10:12

As a variant, I'd also introduce Popcorn AIBU, where the OP and all respondents are only allowed one single post of one single sentence maximum - ideally just a word or two.

The Boffins on Big Talk can't quite manage it, but I'm sure we could Grin

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I can do the bracket ones, but would like to be able to click a button and see a selection of interesting ones. I don't often need to add a daffodil or a football, but there are plenty of times I'd like to add a heart or a hug or even a bit of sunshine.[/quote]
Anything that's not listed I just Google and do a copy (command) and paste.

So I don't think there was the same problem of malicious registrations and PBPs reappearing. I don't think this is true. I had internet access from the mid 90s via dial up - at that time most ISPs assigned you an IP address when you dialled in (Demon being a notable exception). It was easy to create numerous e-mail addresses and to sign up for multiple ISPs.

I don't know why you think it's so vital to have a traceable ID for everyone - what problem are you trying to solve exactly?

ErrolTheDragon · 01/07/2021 11:37

I said - PBPs. Previously banned posters. Trolls and troublemakers who appear again and again. I didn't say it was 'so vital' - merely that it might be useful.

VeganVeal · 01/07/2021 13:34

Ban Karens

ErrolTheDragon · 01/07/2021 13:44

@VeganVeal

Ban Karens
Ban people who call women 'Karens'.

Fair enough - I didn't realise there was a big issue with PBPs and troublemakers. Presumably they are fairly easy to spot - otherwise they aren't doing the thing that is a problem? Requiring ID from everyone seems to be punishing the majority for the sins of a few - but I admit I don't know how bad it is.
SunSeaSurfGin · 01/07/2021 14:09

@Skysblue

Make it just for mums.
Why? I never understand this argument

You don't need to be a mum to have an opinion on the baby name & parking threads or the what's on tv threads.

dohdohdoh · 01/07/2021 14:16

Have a "dark mode" for when I'm reading before bed/middle of the night feeds etc.

HaveringWavering · 01/07/2021 14:20

I got gaslighted too re a tech issue- they didn’t believe that it used to be possible to remove a thread from “I’m on” by clicking on three little dots. Has been really annoying having deleted threads and ones I have lost interest in cluttering up the “I’m on” list but they never even admitted they took that function away.

Lokdok · 01/07/2021 14:23

Stop the vile and rampant transphobia! Mumsnet is basically a hate speech website.

StillCalmX · 01/07/2021 14:24

No it isnt

ArabellaScott · 01/07/2021 14:28

Where, Lokdok? Do report it if you see any hate speech.

DadJoke · 01/07/2021 14:35

Get rid of the transphobes, so that mumsnet is no longer widely known as "transphobia central" when it's a only a small part of an important community. Racism, homophobia and transphobia aren't literally illegal, but there's no need to have them here.
