What changes would you bring in?

What would you get rid of/implement?

Let's hear it - I'm intrigued :)

@MichaelMumsnet

Apols all. We took this one down briefly whilst we checked things out behind the scenes. It's back now.
Erm what now? Did you take down the wrong thread?
WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 30/06/2021 21:40

All agreed - goady is ridiculous.

The word is often used when somebody just has an unusual/unpopular/controversial opinion, but one that they still have every right to have.

If somebody started a thread saying "Come on, we all know that council tenants are all up to no good, don't we, so AIBU to say we should just skip the pointless ordinary dignified housing step and put them straight into a special council borstal?" - THAT would clearly be goady.

However, far too many people use it when they simply disagree with somebody and can't 'use their words' to argue debate it. The word 'bigot' is widely used in the same way. You may hate somebody's unpopular opinion, but you can't win - or even just get your counterpoint across - by saying nothing other than accusing them of being goady.

underneaththeash · 30/06/2021 21:48

I'd immediately delete trolls - as they're bloody obvious.
Delete posts that have Iv rather than I've.
Delete posts from anyone in GH who doesn't have a clue what they're talking about.
Delete posts recommending co-sleeping with a small baby (and MNHQ are daft not doing that as they could be legally liable).

peachyandkeen · 30/06/2021 21:52

@AlGorithim What did the original deletion message say?

OP posts:
Pottedpalm · 30/06/2021 22:05

I would ban posters who accuse others of being ‘naive’ because they have a different viewpoint.

AlGorithim · 30/06/2021 22:05

The MNHQ gaslighting members over the 1000 posts per page thing is just bizarre. They did the same thing over the ‘hide thread’ button and I honestly thought I was losing my mind for a while.

I used to have 1000 posts per page. This suddenly disappeared overnight without me changing anything and when I raised it, MNHQ made me jump through the usual hoops of saying what browser, what version, have you tried a different browser, switch it off and on again bollocks, but each reply was weeks in between. Finally, they just ghosted me and I kept asking for an update because I’m bloody minded like that and MNHQ just ignored me.

Secondly, there used to be a button next to threads to hide the thread without having to click into it. Again, overnight it suddenly vanished so I asked about it and MNHQ basically said ‘what button, we don’t know what you’re talking about, send us a screen shot’. Of course, I couldn’t because it wasn’t there any more, but they literally pretended they had no idea what I meant.

Both of the above lead me to believe that not only is MNHQ technically under-served, but the moderators don’t have any understanding of technical issues and so just fob users off hoping that they will go away or the problem will somehow magically fix itself.
@AlGorithim What did the original deletion message say?
It just said something like ‘this is a PBP so we’re taking it down’.

peachyandkeen · 30/06/2021 22:08

@AlGorithim

Oh right - yes - that's what they said to me in an email - but only after I had chased them to ask why I couldn't log in.

So: no notification of the ban, and then it was lifted after they said they had investigated - but no apology either or acknowledgement of the mistake.

Charming!

'Apols'

Jesus. This honestly unnerves me a little!

I know this sounds a bit conspiracy-theorist but I honestly do question whether I was banned today for asking MNers how they would run MN differently for a day! Its as though they take umbrage with constructive (and light-hearted) criticism!

No thanks to all the other tacky forum features whose absences keeps MN unique. You can keep your Facebook reactions.

Pebbledashery · 30/06/2021 22:13

Add a self destruct button to a troll post once it's identified as a reverse or troll post, a bomb appears on the screen, 5 second count down.. Booooom. Troll no more.

Grainjar · 30/06/2021 22:25

I'd find a way to stop threads appearing in the Daily Mail. There must be one, surely!

camelfinger · 30/06/2021 22:25

Get a chat bot to respond to questions that have been asked a million times to avoid the “Google is your friend” type responses.

For one week only introduce a retro Mumsnet week. Temporarily remove all threads except for those from the mid 2000s. And we could have the old logo with the bootcut jeans now that they are allegedly back in style.

MrsJuliaGulia · 30/06/2021 22:31

Haven’t read the thread but I’d welcome back Posie Parker with open arms. She is a huge champion of women and fights tireless for our rights yet because she refuses to pander trans women’s desire for us all to refer to them as women and use female pronouns, she’s been handed a life time ban.

Talk about the patriarchy winning on a women’s forum.

So yes, I’d beg Posie to come back, apologise profusely to her for my ignorance in banning her and thank her for all she has done to keep women’s single spaces safe from biological men.

Justanotherlurker · 30/06/2021 22:46

Stop namechanging and impliment a user history similar to other forums.

It would bring the forum back to being somewhat genuine and would stop a lot of baiting, some posters need to live and die by the sword of what they post or take thier 'niave innocense' elsewhere

Skysblue · 30/06/2021 22:57

HaveringWavering · 30/06/2021 23:13

@Piglet89

Immediate shock for Minesabottle on this thread running right now about neighbour noise.
No, that poster was talking about the lease that you have when you buy a leasehold property, which is what most flats in England are. Hence saying that the neighbour’s lease will be similar. That would not be the case if she was talking about individual tenancy agreements.
Peoniesandpeaches · 30/06/2021 23:15

I don’t see why it would be so horrible to make it for mums and those ttc. It’s annoying when people post about how they are soooo glad they don’t have children on a forum for parents especially on threads about difficulties people are facing.

Id also set some boundaries. By that I mean just tell those who cone here full of incoherent nonsense after out of context screenshots , no. No second chances. No benefit of the doubt. Just told no.

Allow correct sexing and remove the blocks on language deliberately set to make it as hard as possible to talk about anything.

Bring back lang cleg

Get rid of the adverts

Banning posters who participate on deliberate malicious reporting

MN has long since stopped being only for mums and those ttc. Years and years ago.

All sorts of different people use this site now - those without children (through choice or just because that's how its happened), fathers, grandparents, teachers, people who were once mothers but have lost their child / children, young men and women who are too young to have children, professional people seeking advice from the site.

I agree with PP - you just don't really understand / have an appreciation for how Mumsnet has evolved. And so much of the chat on this site is not actually about motherhood / ttc.

And another thing I'd say is that its wrong to suggest that just because somebody is not a mother / doesnt children, that their opinions and suggestions cannot be of use. Yes of course, if you do not have children / are not a mother then it is logical that you will only ever have a limited understanding of what that is like - but perhaps that is some of the beauty of Mumsnet - a million and one perspectives under one roof.
