What changes would you bring in?

What would you get rid of/implement?

Let's hear it - I'm intrigued :)

Apols all. We took this one down briefly whilst we checked things out behind the scenes. It's back now.

IronTeeth · 30/06/2021 11:48

Lockheart

Well I'd take all the shit that doesn't belong here out of AIBU for a start...

Oh lighten up! AIBU gets loads of traction so it makes sense that people post here for responses. Maybe if MN reformatted the website then this wouldn't happen?

Make your mind up!

I'd lock Zombie threads

I’d explain properly what happened here. 😂

DynamoKev · 30/06/2021 11:56

@WhatsMyNameGonnaBeNow

I’d change the name of AIBU to something that actually invites discussion rather than the Yes/No, YABU/YANBU argumentative style this topic encourages.

Get the ban hammer out for:

All those dickish posters who only rock onto a thread to throw out a nasty comment. Bitch plop and run. They’d all be gone .
The ones who nit pick their way through a comment, twist someone’s words into a ridiculous exaggeration of what the poster actually said and then critique what they’ve decided the poster meant.
The po-faced self appointed head girl types. You know the ones who join a thread to admonish the strangers on the internet for not keeping other strangers on the internet front and centre in all their thoughts and discussions -

OP I’m thinking about switching to online grocery shopping, which supermarket do MNers find most reliable?
Head Girl It’s important to understand that some people don’t have a supermarket to shop in/money to buy items/fingers to type their order 🙄

Also the Me-railers

OP Would you be ok leaving your 14 year old home alone until 10pm?
Random MNer I’d expect the average 14 year old to be perfectly able to cope with that.
Me-Railer. OMG Random MNer! My 14 year olds head fell off so they can never be left alone, thanks for making me feel like a shit parent!

Delete probably 70% of the available topics and condense what remains. There are way too many and lots are just tumbleweed which results in the ‘Posting for Traffic’ in AIBU (and getting a kicking as a result)

I wouldn’t ban the I earn squillions in a niche role that’s too outing to say but you must understand it doesn’t go far in London/I replace half of every meal with lentils, the other half with porridge and earn tuppence ha’penny a month and we live very comfortably because we cancelled Netflix.
Cos those ones are hilarious 😄

In other words, your take all the fun out of AIBU.
No Thanks.

Yep! Slightly different story than the deletion message said! Grin
Blossomtoes · 30/06/2021 12:07

@BestZebbie

Add the ability to edit posts to remove typos!!!

I'd also quite like to add clickable reaction buttons at the foot of posts, as seen on Ravelry.

This. I’d also make the guidelines much more specific and the moderation more consistent. It seems ridiculous that on the same site people can call each other cunts, yet be deleted for requesting a goady poster to fuck off.

If I were only going to run it for one day but had full control to do whatever I liked, I'd withdraw all the money the business had and keep it for myself. I'd also run up as much debt as I could in its name and keep that too. Not "nice" but that's why they don't let any old idiot take charge for 24hrs and then come back to deal with the fallout.

Whoarethewho · 30/06/2021 12:22

Remove all the trigger warnings
Apply rules equally. I.e if you allow sexists things to be said about men the allow the same for women likewise racism white people are not free to target or their race used against them and if they dare stand up Mumsnet deletes with a note about talk guidelines.

Basically I would make it free speech entirely unless actual laws have been broken.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/06/2021 12:24

Rename the Feminism: chat board.

Its threads about Rape, Abortion etc. How is that 'Chat'?

Can't think of a name for it though... Feminism: Other issues is the nearest I can come up with.

bethabean · 30/06/2021 12:28

Get rid of royal Caribbean ads so I stop accidentally clicking on them

CardinalLolzy · 30/06/2021 13:06

@GiantWingedWaspMoth

Zombie threads should locked

I disagree. Occasionally we get an op coming back with an important update.

Maybe, if you are not the op, you need to go through a process before posting on a zombie thread, checking boxes. And if you are found to have lied when answering the questions, then you get a suspension, leading to a ban for multiple occurrences

'this is a zombie thread, do you want to resurrect it?'

'do you have something interesting and relevant to add?'

'are you quite sure about that?'

'do you acknowledge that failure to answer these questions accurately will lead to a suspension and possible ban?'

The zombie thread warning should at least continue for all others posting after a long break, rather than just the first one.

Default page setting should be 100/ page.

Piglet89 · 30/06/2021 13:08

Remote electric shock the moment members make a post displaying poor reading comprehension of (or not even having bothered to read) the OP’s posts.

🤣 I love you @Piglet89!
Piglet89 · 30/06/2021 13:15

Haha @Blossomtoes just a little shock and a warning message. Enough to make them jump. Nothing really inhumane.

Piglet89 · 30/06/2021 13:39

Immediate shock for Minesabottle on this thread running right now about neighbour noise.

I would be interested to see how many views a post gets and I'd love to ban the word naice from being used.

Better zombie thread control, an edit button - and I don't seem to be able to quote posts that are quoting someone else - that fucks me off no end. Finally I'd ban some of the stupid words people use constantly that you never hear in RL - like goady.

DynamoKev · 30/06/2021 14:29

Both of those sound like personal attacks which are against the rules.
If no-one reports a post (perhaps because everyone agrees with the sentiment) then it sometimes gets left in place - there was a lot of name calling of the OP on a cat thread recently that went unchallenged - presumably due to all the cat lovers being in agreement with the abuse of the OP.

All agreed - goady is ridiculous. Also the unique MN definition of "troll" as synonymous with liar.
Notfeelingsopeachyandkeennow · 30/06/2021 14:54

OK - please help me out MNers! This is my thread - I am peachyandkeen (and can prove this with a screenshot if needs be) and this is a username that I have set up just to be able to comment on the thread. I can see that the thread was taken down earlier and has since been put back up - but I am now completely unable to access Mumsnet via my original username!

When I try to logon it says 'this username does not exist'! Which extremely irritating as I am bedridden today (and yesterday) with a cold so little else to do apart from wander around on here.

I have emailed Mumsnet - no response as of yet. But also they have not notified me of any ban or anything like that - and if the thread is still up I can't see why I would have been banned in any event.

Any wise / long-timers know why this might be / how to go about rectifying the situation?

I feel muzzled!

@MichaelMumsnet - any ideas? Tried to tag just Mumsnet but not sure how!

Thank you in advance...

Notfeelingsopeachyandkeennow · 30/06/2021 14:55

I don't mean 'MY' thread - I simply mean that I was the OP :)

Proper explanations for threads that have been deleted!
Amillionnc · 30/06/2021 15:22

@Coffee4Queen

Add some kind of obvious in your face message or a really loud bell sound, neon flashing lights or something to stop people resurrecting zombie threads. Especially if there has been some kind of tragedy since the first opening post.
Yes to making zombie threads more obvious and a lock/unlock function that the OP can control if they want to update.
