What changes would you bring in?

What would you get rid of/implement?

Let's hear it - I'm intrigued :)

@waltzingparrot

I think it would be useful if we could all have 2 usernames that we could toggle between for times you need to name change but don't want to go through the current rigmarole of name changing.
There isn't quite a "toggle" function, but once you've 'registered' a username you can just type it into the "Username" box where you add a comment and you can change it just for that post. I have 4 that I regularly use this way.
DynamoKev · 30/06/2021 09:56

@NotTheFunKindOfFeminist

Allow people to correctly sex men and women.

Allow discussions of biology.

MN seems to be one of the few places left where this is actually possible.
littletinyboxes · 30/06/2021 09:56

I'd add/invent a function that checks your title for sense and against similar posts. If the title is along the lines of 'AIBU to be unhappy about this' (ie no idea given what the thread is actually about) the poster will be asked to update. If the title is similar to a million others, the poster will be shown these similar threads and asked to confirm that the question has not already been answered. If the post makes no sense the poster will be given some suggested amendments and asked to amend or confirm it's not supposed to make sense (ie. it's an intentionally odd title and not just a toddler pressing buttons/fat fingers). Any post in AIBU will trigger a request to confirm that the poster ACTUALLY wants comments on whether or not they are being unreasonable (and posters who tick yes and post something that should be elsewhere will be penalised).

Reintroduce the 1000 posts per page function

I use the 'show all messages' function. It still exists, on the website at least.

I don't know about the app, so you might be talking about that?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/06/2021 09:58

I’d ban anyone who makes an unfounded accusation of transphobia because they can’t accept that disagreement does not equal hatred and the GC beliefs are protected in law.

Zombie threads should locked.

AnotherSunrise · 30/06/2021 09:59

Sex it up a bit
The format is boring

ChequerBoard · 30/06/2021 10:01

Improve the app - it's shockingly bad, has anyone at MN actually tried to use it to add a photo recently??

Add a better, well understood place-marking function to stop all the 'place-marking' posts cluttering up busy threads.

Add an ability to extend long running threads over 1000 posts.

GiantWingedWaspMoth · 30/06/2021 10:03

Zombie threads should locked

I disagree. Occasionally we get an op coming back with an important update.

Maybe, if you are not the op, you need to go through a process before posting on a zombie thread, checking boxes. And if you are found to have lied when answering the questions, then you get a suspension, leading to a ban for multiple occurrences

'this is a zombie thread, do you want to resurrect it?'

'do you have something interesting and relevant to add?'

'are you quite sure about that?'

'do you acknowledge that failure to answer these questions accurately will lead to a suspension and possible ban?'

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/06/2021 10:05

Fair point. I don’t mind the OP updating a zombie but nobody else should be able to.

I don't see that as an option on the website.

Yes, this works fine on the app and the tablet browser, don't know about the mobile app.

Cam77 · 30/06/2021 10:13

Upvote/Recommend button.
Sometimes people post something really great/funny/profound, but on a popular thread it gets post among pages of dross.

Cam77 · 30/06/2021 10:13

*lost

ArabellaScott · 30/06/2021 10:14

Add gifs.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/06/2021 10:15

Not sure but I think the 'show all messages may only appear once the thread has more than 100 or whatever the number is posts per page.

I'm on three website on my phone. If you click the little arrow to the right of where it says 'Talk - AIBU', it shows as an option.

Controversial but I’d allow troll hunting.

I'm on three website on my phone. If you click the little arrow to the right of where it says 'Talk - AIBU', it shows as an option.

That doesn’t seem to work for me. It splits it into 2 pages which i think is 100 messages per page (which I have it set to anyway).

Last time I asked about the 1000 messages I was told that feature was removed years ago, which was a lie by mnhq as my original account was signed up way after the date they told me.

I’d implement more rigorous training for the “staff” because they talk shite most of the time (as my point above). And I’d ban them from being able to say “we will take your feedback onboard” on the site stuff threads as they never do and it’s insulting they keep peddling that tripe out.

I would want the zombie threads closed only to op but it might be more fun to leave them open and ban anyone who resurrects them Grin

Hire a decent IT team to overhaul the website as the coding and development is stone aged. What they’re spending the ad revenue / premium fees on is beyond me because it’s not the infrastructure.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 30/06/2021 10:37

Oh I’d also ban the “we have concerns” deletion notice for a more honest notice.

“OP is being a little bitch and doesn’t like being called out so has asked for this to be deleted citing faux “outing” concerns” type thing.

GiantWingedWaspMoth · 30/06/2021 10:39

That doesn’t seem to work for me

That's odd. I use it all the time, on my mobile and on my laptop. I don't understand why it would be different for you.

I’d change the name of AIBU to something that actually invites discussion rather than the Yes/No, YABU/YANBU argumentative style this topic encourages.

Get the ban hammer out for:

All those dickish posters who only rock onto a thread to throw out a nasty comment. Bitch plop and run. They’d all be gone .
The ones who nit pick their way through a comment, twist someone’s words into a ridiculous exaggeration of what the poster actually said and then critique what they’ve decided the poster meant.
The po-faced self appointed head girl types. You know the ones who join a thread to admonish the strangers on the internet for not keeping other strangers on the internet front and centre in all their thoughts and discussions -

OP I’m thinking about switching to online grocery shopping, which supermarket do MNers find most reliable?
Head Girl It’s important to understand that some people don’t have a supermarket to shop in/money to buy items/fingers to type their order 🙄

Also the Me-railers

OP Would you be ok leaving your 14 year old home alone until 10pm?
Random MNer I’d expect the average 14 year old to be perfectly able to cope with that.
Me-Railer. OMG Random MNer! My 14 year olds head fell off so they can never be left alone, thanks for making me feel like a shit parent!

Delete probably 70% of the available topics and condense what remains. There are way too many and lots are just tumbleweed which results in the ‘Posting for Traffic’ in AIBU (and getting a kicking as a result)

I wouldn’t ban the I earn squillions in a niche role that’s too outing to say but you must understand it doesn’t go far in London/I replace half of every meal with lentils, the other half with porridge and earn tuppence ha’penny a month and we live very comfortably because we cancelled Netflix.
Cos those ones are hilarious 😄
