To send child to school with no breakfast.

I feel really guilty, although I know they have bagels in class in the morning plus snack at half 10.

She refused to get out of bed this morning until it was time to leave, then refused to get dressed. She was 25 minutes late for school and if she had breakfast too that would have made her even later! She’s 6, and seriously pushing boundaries atm. She loves school, so not a school issue. Just very much not a morning person.

My Ds is not a morning person - I’m not either so I sympathise!

He occasionally really can’t stomach the idea of breakfast, or doesn’t want very much, and I can’t force him! Even then, he’ll have a glass of milk which I think is something. At first I was worried on days when he only wanted yoghurt (I get plain Greek yoghurt) but apparently the fat is good for keeping them going!

I think this is a difficult one for many parents.

I didn't eat breakfast as a child (apart from weekends/holidays when I was not up early), never fancied anything to eat until later so I went to school without eating. I know my mum worried about it, it didn't bother me. However I do remember a teacher talking to my class about the importance of breakfast and saying any parent who sent their child to school without it was neglectful. Naturally I came home and told my mother about this. I won't post her reaction :-).

Fast forward many years to when I am a parent. My children would not eat breakfast! They spent ages getting themselves ready for school but would not eat. I, or husband if I was at work, would lay the kitchen table, put cereal boxes on it, a jug of milk, some bread to go in the toaster and a pot of tea. Complete waste of time.

They both took a packed lunch so I would include an extra sandwich if they were hungry earlier on and both did eat that at mid morning break. I have a vague recollection of my mother giving me something to take to school too.

Children are like any of us only younger, which is stating the obvious :); what I mean is, like ourselves, they don't always want to eat at particular times.

(My husband always had full breakfast before going to school, college and eventually, work. It's beyond me how anyone could fancy sausages at an early hour.)

@Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep

How does a 6 year old 'refuse to get out of bed'?
Because there are no consequences. There’s even a reward - bagels and snacks at school. So now there’s a 6-year-old who thinks there’s no need to get up on time, she can be late, skip breakfast and have bagels and snacks.

I can’t believe the amount of posters who commented on this without reading it all properly!

Hope you have a better morning today OP, has she settled into her new school ok? Just wonder if it’s partly a reaction to that

LittleBlackCat22 · 25/06/2021 08:02

She’s just woken me up with a plate of toast and she is dressed and ready for school. Hopefully it was just a one off!

Ok that's very sweet! Hopefully she's learnt her lesson.

(Impressed your 6 yo can make toast btw, mine would've probably set the kitchen on fire!)

Hilarious over reactions on this post Grin one morning of DD wanting a lie in and OP needs parenting lessons. I can only imagine how horrified you would be if you saw mornings in my house. Cheerios and smoothies in the car are a regular occurrence.

LittleBlackCat22 · 25/06/2021 12:13

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal haha she is very self sufficient! She’s had to be, I was single parent until a few years ago with ill health so she’s had to learn to do a lot for herself.
