To ask how old your sofa is?

Purchasing a new property with DP, we currently have a blue bulky recliner sofa. It only seats two people. I want to get a new bigger one, that isn’t blue or pleather, he says i’m being unreasonable as the sofa is only 2 years old…

I was scrolling the sofology website and they’re giving 20 year guarantees on sofas- i couldn’t imagine having mine for that long!

How old is your sofa and how often do you replace it?

@Onairjunkie

A blue pleather recliner does sound awful. 🤭 I wholeheartedly support any efforts you may make to replace it.
It is truly terrible!

Didn’t expect this many responses- I’m happy to say okay and back down as the over whelming response is that i’m being unreasonableGrin

I think we bought ours in 2008 or 9

Dishwashersaurous · 18/06/2021 22:22

Ten years and still looks brand new. Can't imagine replacing it for at least another decade

DroopyClematis · 18/06/2021 22:27

Laura Ashley sofa is as good as new.. nearly ten years I think, despite a few cat scratches.
Harvey's sofa is 4 years old and we want rid of it.

ChocolateCakeYum · 18/06/2021 22:28

We have 3 sofas (2 two seaters in one reception room and 1 three seater in the other reception room)

2 are about 5 years old, the other 4.

We don’t replace them until absolutely necessary (so when they break pretty much).

AnneElliott · 18/06/2021 22:29

I think we bought ours in 2002/3. I don't get rid of things until they break down or become unusable.

But if you can sell it on then why not buy a new one? As long as it doesn't go to landfill.

therocinante · 18/06/2021 22:31

Ours is at least 10 years old, but I bought it second hand in my early 20s from a weird shop so god knows. The cats have trashed the arms or it'd still have a few years in it to be honest!

BarbarianMum · 18/06/2021 22:33

16 and 18 this year. We are planning on replacing at about 20 years.

TimeToGoOut · 18/06/2021 22:36

18 years. Still looks great.

MinkeDinkie · 18/06/2021 22:36

If you can afford it why not? It's something you use every day. And someone will be glad of your old one. Mine are 2nd hand and I know I was! :)

MondeoFan · 18/06/2021 22:37

Mine is 21 years old. Wouldn't think so though if you saw it

FrangipaniBlue · 18/06/2021 22:38

17 years old.

We have a corner group and a Otto mom. We did have a 2 seater to match which we've just replaced as the recliner mechanisms failed.

FrangipaniBlue · 18/06/2021 22:38

FGS ottoman!

InFiveMins · 18/06/2021 22:39

We keep ours for roughly 5 years and then change them because that's when we usually redecorate and fancy something different. We've had fabric sofas, leather sofas, all sorts of colours and patterns - I don't like the thought of keeping a sofa for so long because I like to redecorate often- but there's nothing wrong with keeping them. Parents have had their couch for 20 years and that suits them.

I think always go for the best you can afford because the quality really shows.

Also, we always donate our sofas rather than tip them.

Flamingosarentreal · 18/06/2021 22:41

Sofa is 12 years. My foot stool I won at fete in 1976 and it has only been recovered once in that time. Best 20p raffle ticket I've bought!

Giggorata · 18/06/2021 22:45

I bought a 1920s sofa and chairs in an auction thirty years ago, which is still in good nick, although I don't let the arm down on the sofa, as the mechanism is a bit stiff.
There are two leather chesterfields in the sitting room, one is about 150 years old and the other around 70 years old, still going strong and aged well.
I have a modern hide sofa in another room.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 18/06/2021 22:46

Just got a new one this week. Our last was 7/8 years old. No way would I want to keep it for 20 years!

NameChangeforMoneyThings · 18/06/2021 22:57

To be clear, if I had a sofa I hated and I could afford to replace it then I would buy a new one or at least new to me.

My sofas are old but they're very well made and a neutral cream fabric. If they weren't then I wouldn't keep them for the sake of it. I just wouldn't make the same error twice.

Indoctro · 18/06/2021 23:08

2014 we bought it for £5000 which I felt was pretty expensive for a sofa so definitely wouldn't be replacing till minimum 10 years. It currently still is in a fantastic condition and still looks as good as new.

okilydokily · 18/06/2021 23:14

One is 15 (from Argos), the other was given to us by friends when they upgraded their sofa, 11 years ago. So its probably 15-20 years old. I'm desperate for new sofas but hopefully we'll move house in the next year, so I'll hang fire!!

RainbowMum11 · 18/06/2021 23:15

Mine is 8 years old, and as it fits and does the job, I will be keeping it for a while longer!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/06/2021 00:32

14 years old and still going strong. It's a Tetrad. It has leather arms and cushions. I think we'll get another couple of years before we have to recover the cushions. It's huge and can be used a s a spare bed when we have guests.

Looubylou · 19/06/2021 10:44

19 years, leather, 2 seater, 3 seater and chair. 2 and 3 seaters have just had bottom cushions refilled. Looks and feels like new.

Looubylou · 19/06/2021 10:52

That said, if you don't like it, change it, but make better choices. Life is too short. A sofa you don't like will take the granny off new house.

Ozanj · 19/06/2021 13:26

Real leather from dfs 10 years and still going strong.
