To ask how old your sofa is?

Purchasing a new property with DP, we currently have a blue bulky recliner sofa. It only seats two people. I want to get a new bigger one, that isn’t blue or pleather, he says i’m being unreasonable as the sofa is only 2 years old…

I was scrolling the sofology website and they’re giving 20 year guarantees on sofas- i couldn’t imagine having mine for that long!

How old is your sofa and how often do you replace it?

I bought our sofas in 2005. I would like new ones but these ones still look ok so I can’t bring myself to spend the money Confused

whatswithtodaytoday · 18/06/2021 18:54

Well, we've been together 15 years and we bought the sofas off our first landlord, and they'd owned the flat for a few years when we lived there... so probably 20 years?

They are a bit tatty (and I don't like how they look, but they're so comfy), but we have a two year old so no point getting new ones for a while yet. I would expect a sofa to last at least 10 years.

chipsandgin · 18/06/2021 18:54

16 years & I hate it, but DH loves it so it’s a bit of a bone of contention. My parents have the sofa I had before that which is now 28 years old & still going strong (but gave it to them as was too small for whatever house I was moving into 16 years ago..).

On the whole though 2 years seems basically brand new to me & the concept of replacing sofas constantly seems odd to me. Just make sure you buy a comfortable, good quality (& possibly a bit more classic than blue pleather, although if that’s your thing then go for it..) one that you both really like & it could last for 20 years easily.

MirandaWest · 18/06/2021 18:55

The ones in the living room predate DH and me getting together 9 years ago. They’re probably about 12 years old maybe longer. I suspect they will never wear out (black leather, not my favourite but they are comfortable). The ones in our converted garage/home office pre date DS, who is 17.5. They’re probably about 19 by now.
Sofa in the kitchen is about 8 I think. And the sofa bed upstairs is 6.

PineappleTart · 18/06/2021 18:55

Mine was free 5 years ago Grin

Bluntness100 · 18/06/2021 18:56

@Blossomtoes

How on earth do you steal a sofa?

You live in an officers’ mess that’s about to be closed and pop it in the back of your hire van when you move out! 😉

No one lives in an officers mess. It’s the recreational /food room.
Blossomtoes · 18/06/2021 18:59

@Bluntness100, countless people live in messes. For goodness sake check your facts before you post bollocks.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 18/06/2021 19:04

Ours are 20 years old. We bought 2. We had them recovered 2 years ago. They are still absolutely great. Really comfortable.

Underhisi · 18/06/2021 19:06

24 years old from a sofa company. Bought when we bought our first house together. Still very comfortable. Has been covered in throws most of that time so few marks on it.

AfternoonToffee · 18/06/2021 19:06

Main ones are 19 years old, leather and have only recently started to show their age. The sofa bed is about 12 years old.

MIL's pre date me so must be over 20 years old.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/06/2021 19:06

We got ours in November 13, it’s got a few good years left in it yet.

No they don’t. The mess is the recreational room. I’m married to ex forces.

Blossomtoes · 18/06/2021 19:09

I’m married to ex forces

So am I - one who lived in several officers’ messes. Go and check with your bloke, then come back and tell me how hard he laughed at you.

Concestor · 18/06/2021 19:09

These ones are ten years old, the previous one was 13 years old.

Why on earth would you replace a sofa after two years? So wasteful.

ladygindiva · 18/06/2021 19:10

About 9 years, thinking of replacing as soon as 4yr old dd stops weeing on it when engrossed in films / wiping yogurty hands on it etc. Hoping within the next year. Tbh would prob have replaced 2 years ago but absolutely pointless with 2 yo twins!

StevieNix · 18/06/2021 19:10

Ours is a huge grey corner sofa- so comfy but it is starting to look a bit tatty and too slouchy. We’ve had it for 5 years- with a baby/toddler clambering all over it etc
We will replace it some point this year but it’s not at the top of our priorities at the moment

amymel2016 · 18/06/2021 19:11

Our new one is 18 months old and our old one is 11 years, planning on keeping both for atleast another 10 years

MaloInAnAppleTree · 18/06/2021 19:11

Seconding blossomtoes (though I really shouldn’t need to, why on earth would she make it up?). The Mess is where soldiers eat but it is also in some cases where unmarried soldiers live. See Wikipedia if not convinced.

BackforGood · 18/06/2021 19:25

Current one is just 2 years old, but I expect it to last two decades, like the previous one.

Longtime67 · 18/06/2021 19:28

One year

Onairjunkie · 18/06/2021 19:37

A blue pleather recliner does sound awful. 🤭 I wholeheartedly support any efforts you may make to replace it.

Drivingmeupthewall · 18/06/2021 19:40

Some messes have ‘live-in’ elements. It’s not common though.

How did we get onto messes? I’ve not read the whole thread.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 18/06/2021 19:46

Now it's 2 years old. The last one was 17 years.

Our bed & mattress is 20 years old. When we bought it and it had a 10 year guarantee I couldn't imagine having it that long.

We really need a new one now mind....

Blossomtoes · 18/06/2021 19:47

All British officers’ messes have live in accommodation. We got there because my bloke stole a sofa from one. 🤣
MissCalamity · 18/06/2021 19:48

Current sofa is less than 2 years old, however the previous sofa out dates mine & DP's relationship, so at least 15 years old and was going quite well for a cream leather sofa until the kids came along 😆
