To ask how old your sofa is?

Purchasing a new property with DP, we currently have a blue bulky recliner sofa. It only seats two people. I want to get a new bigger one, that isn’t blue or pleather, he says i’m being unreasonable as the sofa is only 2 years old…

I was scrolling the sofology website and they’re giving 20 year guarantees on sofas- i couldn’t imagine having mine for that long!

How old is your sofa and how often do you replace it?

Sofas are 32 years old here. They are looking a little shabby but every time I look at buying new ones I just realise they don't annoy me enough to spend however many hundreds of pounds replacing them with no guarantees that the new ones will last and be comfy.

I have been debating getting new covers upholstered but that's also terribly expensive. I may make new ones myself if I can face it this summer.

Colette · 18/06/2021 17:18

It depends how you get rid of your old sofa whether it’s reasonable or notHmm

haveaday · 18/06/2021 17:18

I moved into a renovation project 3 years ago, we have 2 sitting rooms and both had new sofas 2 years ago. Sofa from old house was about 5 or 6 years old but didn't fit in new house!

Tulipomania · 18/06/2021 17:18

We have 5 sofas in our house.

The newest are 15 years old.

Oldest probably 40+.

We buy quality to last.

hellogem · 18/06/2021 17:19

6 years old

I do want new ones tho even tho theses are in perfect condition super comfortable. Just want a different look. Maybe in couple of years

ProfessorofCunning · 18/06/2021 17:20

24 years for the two we have. They’re still ok. Enough that we can’t justify the expense of buying new ones, which we definitely can’t afford. They’ve done three dogs, multiple cats and 4 children.

Angrymum22 · 18/06/2021 17:20

21yrs but bought to last. It needs new covers ( you can still get them it is a timeless design and still manufactured).
When we chose it DH had only one stipulation, that he could lie out flat on and at 6’2” that was a big ask. I found one that was 8ft long but still fitted the space. Unfortunately it is now “worn in” so DH will not part with it. I have delayed having new covers until DS reaches an age where he is unlikely to damage it through normal activity he is nearly 17 so not long to wait, in fact to be on the safe side I may wait until he leaves for Uni in a couple of years.
It was made by Collin & Hayes, expensive but indestructible and so comfortable.

FAD2016 · 18/06/2021 17:21

2 years old and I hate it. It’s so uncomfortable so I am definitely considering replacing it. Previous one was over 10 years old

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 18/06/2021 17:22
  1. It’s leather and starting to look a little bit scruffy but with young DC I’ll wait a few more years before we bother replacing it.
FizzyBiscuits · 18/06/2021 17:22

1 is 15 years old.

The other two are hand me downs that are over 12 years old.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 18/06/2021 17:22

I think about 7 years?

RestingStitchFace · 18/06/2021 17:22

Current one is 5 years old, previous ones lasted 12 years,

MuchTooTired · 18/06/2021 17:24

Three years old this year - bought it when our DTs were 6 months and they’ve destroyed it. I’d love to get a new one but dh is adamant we should get it professionally cleaned first to see if it lifts any of it out (he’s very attached to it).

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 18/06/2021 17:25

16 years old but still very comfy and in good condition.

SuperMonkeys · 18/06/2021 17:25

One is a few years old but bought second hand. Other is 15 years old but bought new.

Growing up our sofas were often a few decades old!

Kenworthington · 18/06/2021 17:25

18 years old and still perfect condition. In fact they’re looking better than ever- a beautiful leather mid-century- design

RickJames · 18/06/2021 17:26

About 20 years old Blush They are good leather in a classic style though. I get new throw cushions for them every now and again.

I have a dream of replacing them with beautiful new sofas but realistically, something like new windows or bathrooms always comes up and cleans me out.

simbobs · 18/06/2021 17:26

We have 4 in total. The living room ones are 28 yrs old and have been reupholstered once. Family room sofa is about 15 yrs old, but is leather and still looks OK. The newer one is 7 years old and is the only one I would consider replacing.

Kitfish · 18/06/2021 17:27

I got my sofas in 1999 and they're still going strong after 22 years. I wouldn't change them for the world.

CoodleMoodle · 18/06/2021 17:27

7 years, plus we got it second hand so probably a good 5+ years with a previous owner. It's getting a bit lumpy and it's a horrible colour (ruined further by DC!), but I love how wide the seats are and I'm worried we won't find another like it.

IncessantNameChanger · 18/06/2021 17:27

My last one was over ten years old and it eventually ripped. I have had my current set for four years it was 2nd hand off Ebay for £150. 3 and 2 seater seater. Arm chair and foot stall all in leather. I dont think I would buy new again after that bargain

shiningstar2 · 18/06/2021 17:28

We replaced our 13 year old sofas last year. They were passed on to dd. She is delighted with them and expects to keep them at least another 5 years.

Chasingsquirrels · 18/06/2021 17:28

Human years or sofa years?

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 18/06/2021 17:29

12 years and counting. They're still in good condition too.

Getting rid of a sofa after just 2 years is massively wasteful. A good sofa is built to last decades.
