To ask how old your sofa is?

Purchasing a new property with DP, we currently have a blue bulky recliner sofa. It only seats two people. I want to get a new bigger one, that isn’t blue or pleather, he says i’m being unreasonable as the sofa is only 2 years old…

I was scrolling the sofology website and they’re giving 20 year guarantees on sofas- i couldn’t imagine having mine for that long!

How old is your sofa and how often do you replace it?

@Onairjunkie

A blue pleather recliner does sound awful. 🤭 I wholeheartedly support any efforts you may make to replace it.
Tbf, the OP presumably chose to buy a blue pleather sofa, so I presume it's in keeping with her taste.

We have had ours for 22 years. We have had a couple of sets of replacement loose covers but I want a new one and my DH thinks I am being hugely profligate - I'll show him this thread Grin

BirdyBee · 18/06/2021 20:03

About 2 days, previous sofa i had for 14 years which was second hand from my sister who had it for 6ish years, my ds loved the old sofa so much he has squashed it in his room!

wingingit987 · 18/06/2021 20:06

6years not planning to replace mine until I no longer have toddlers xx

cobblers123 · 18/06/2021 20:08

16 years old and would be in excellent condition if it wasn't for the cat...Hmm

grapewine · 18/06/2021 20:12

10 years. I can't afford to replace so am glad they still look pretty good.

ToffeePennie · 18/06/2021 20:12

At least 32 years probably more: I am confidently informed it was bought “before I was born” but as to the exact date/year everyone is unclear. It is plainly in the background of a photo taken the year before I was born.
It’s fabric (originally red) and a bed settee.
I am changing it this weekend (tomorrow) for a much newer sofa but if this new one hadn’t been available we would have lived with it for another few years at least.

Rillington · 18/06/2021 20:14

Current one 16 years old. Previous one was 8 years.

Clickbait · 18/06/2021 20:16

Current one is 4 years old and going strong. Previous one was 16 years old.

PurpleFlower1983 · 18/06/2021 20:19

Mine is about 12 years old and ready for replacing. My mum and dad have a 3 piece leather chesterfield suite that’s 40-odd years old though!! It cost £1000 in the late 70s and has had some restoration but it still looks great! Confused

shivawn · 18/06/2021 20:21

4 and a half years, we paid 1400 for it and its already showing signs of age. I'll make do with it for a couple more years though.

gordongrumpy · 18/06/2021 20:23

20+ years

amusedtodeath1 · 18/06/2021 20:23

One of ours (+ matching armchair) is over 20 years old. Brown leather, very big, lovely patina to the leather. It's still in good condition (it did have a bit of a sag at one point which was fixed), there's no way I will part with it until absolutely necessary.

However, if I had a sofa I hated and could afford to replace it without any hardship, then I'd probably feel like you OP.

shivawn · 18/06/2021 20:25

Why on earth would you replace a sofa after two years? So wasteful.

Presumably she would sell it or give it away rather than tossing it in a skip since its in good condition so no, not wasteful.

OhRene · 18/06/2021 20:25

It must be 7 or 8 years old now. The one before that was older.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 18/06/2021 20:27

10 years old. It replaced a 10 year old one that still looked brand new but we moved and it didn't work in the new house. No plans to replace it any time soon

JaceLancs · 18/06/2021 20:28

Probably had it 10 years - bought second hand so no idea how old it is!

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 18/06/2021 20:28

God knows. It was £30 from a charity shop. It's in VGC though!

hulahooper2 · 18/06/2021 20:32

We have a very good quality one still going strong and looking good after 31 years … we have newer ones in another 2 rooms but that is definitely the best

Graphista · 18/06/2021 20:45

I've had mine 4 years, but they were second hand and free! Previous owners had them about 5 years. Still in good nick!

My mum has me beat hands down though (as she often does with this kinda thing) she just got a new suite last year when she did up the living room. Previous suit had done them...35 years! It also made it through 4 house moves 3 kids 2 dogs and various other smaller pets and 6 grandkids! Grin

And that was also still in really good nick and was given away so still going somewhere

It was a really good solid quality bespoke one though.

so it might be like Trigger's broom at this point.

Grin yea mums washers like that! Almost 40 years old but so many parts replaced I think it's only the framework and the drum are still original pieces now! She says if anything else goes wrong with it it'll have to go as can no longer get parts even off hobby people who are into this kinda thing (yea people like that really exist!)

2 years is no time at all. You could try and sell it but you wouldn't get much for it. Certainly where I am sofas and suites are regularly on the freecycle pages and sites like several a week so why pay?

cantkeepawayforever · 18/06/2021 20:49

Ours - 24 years and counting.

My parents' - 57 years and counting, but recovered once.

In our defence, they are good quality wood-framed sofas, expected to last a lifetime.

Badgercity · 18/06/2021 20:53

8 years and need replacing, or at least re-foaming (if that’s a thing)

pregnantncnc · 18/06/2021 20:57

My sofa and arm chairs are from my late grandmother's house (all our money went into reno not furnishings, lol)... she bought them in 1976, so 45 years old... but we've only had them for 2.

She had them reupholstered twice and had either the cushions replaced or more stuffing put into them in the 00s. I actually quite like the look of them, they're still very comfortable, and with a toddler it doesn't feel worth it to buy one we love, we'll be keeping them for a while (will prob reupholster them when/if we ever finish painting).

mibbelucieachwell · 18/06/2021 20:57

I hate it but it refuses to die.

Madcats · 18/06/2021 20:57

Our newest one had new cushions and loose covers in 2007. The others are circa 1994/6 and we're only really using them since lockdown.

They weren't cheap. They are still comfy, albeit old fashioned (but I am sure they can be adjusted if we fell the need to do so).

The feather cushions are probably a disaster for allergy sufferers, though.
