To ask how old your sofa is?

Purchasing a new property with DP, we currently have a blue bulky recliner sofa. It only seats two people. I want to get a new bigger one, that isn’t blue or pleather, he says i’m being unreasonable as the sofa is only 2 years old…

I was scrolling the sofology website and they’re giving 20 year guarantees on sofas- i couldn’t imagine having mine for that long!

How old is your sofa and how often do you replace it?

10 years. I got it to celebrate my divorce.

Blossomtoes · 18/06/2021 18:26

Two of them are at least 12 years old, the third - and nicest - one, God knows, the bloke stole it! We’ve had it for nine years.

LadyWhistledownsPen · 18/06/2021 18:26

Current sofa is 11 years old but my new one is coming next Friday

L0bstersLass · 18/06/2021 18:27

15 years old, but I had it re-upholsetered 2 years ago as the leather was looking tatty.
I love the shape of the sofa and it's a good brand so I didn't consider buying a brand new one.

mommybear1 · 18/06/2021 18:28

Living room settees are new - purchased 3 years ago when we moved to this house. Sofas in the playroom and snug are my old ones so around 14 years old Grinhaving seen how toddler DS jumps on them they will be staying until they actually break!

Kendodd · 18/06/2021 18:29

Ours is 28 years old. I still love it.
It was expensive and very good quality. I have no intention of changing as it's still in good condition. It has been recovered once though. Recovering it cost £1,000, we could have bought a cheap new sofa for that but didn't want to.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/06/2021 18:30

10 I think. I already got it as a second hand. I just update upholstery covers every now and then. It's pretty solid

tiggy20 · 18/06/2021 18:32

16 years old and absolutely battered by my children using it for dens & climbing frames over the years. Originally £2k from Sofa Workshop.
We are replacing it this year!

Seesawmummadaw · 18/06/2021 18:34

Sofa in the kitchen is from the 80’s! It’s ridiculous looking but really comfy.

StillMedusa · 18/06/2021 18:34

17 years old and three cats later ours are looking their age (leather) but they are so comfy I'm not parting with them unless they collapse!

Zanzibaragain · 18/06/2021 18:35

Right then. 52 years old. bought by my parents for their first home from Heals in 1969, originally brown corduroy, but has been re-upholstered a few times. It's been in and out of fashion several times but now riding the wave of mid-century style it looks wonderful.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/06/2021 18:37

21 years old. It's a n Ikea Nikkala in white, with the original white covers, and it still looks good and feels comfortable. It has taken an immense amount of abuse from DS(6), who likes to stand on the arms and crash-dive onto the seats.

I will not be buying any fancy new sofas until the crashing stage is over.

Whoscoatsthatjacket · 18/06/2021 18:39

6 years but I regret getting it and miss my old one. Had a corner one before and changed it for a sofa and a chair with recliners. Can’t really justify changing it though 🥴

Deeply envious. I love mid century furniture.
Serin · 18/06/2021 18:43

Last ones (sofa company) lasted 15 years and we only changed because they were out of fashion (dark brown leather) but they were so comfy and squishy.
The ones we have now (DFS) are just 1 years old, they are horrible to sit on, weirdly hard and sagging at the same time. The quality is appalling and we will probably change them next year.
We also have a DFS pink corner sofa that is 8 months old and already the fabric is wearing.

Mooloolabababy · 18/06/2021 18:44

This one is 3 weeks old! Last one was about 10 year old though.

AudHvamm · 18/06/2021 18:45

At least 13 years old, inherited from my Dad 7 years ago when we moved in to our last place. It’s an ikea Kivik (?) that we bought new (washable) covers for about 3 years ago. Still going strong and I reckon would let a while yet, but we’ve moved and might change it for something that suits our new needs better.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want to change your sofa if your new place accommodates something bigger.

How on earth do you steal a sofa? Grin
GCAcademic · 18/06/2021 18:47

17 years and still in excellent condition (leather).

Somanysocks · 18/06/2021 18:47

Mine's 30 years old, it's such good quality and in really good condition I'm reluctant to get rid, it could do with re-covering though to drag the pattern into the 21st century.

CeCePlus · 18/06/2021 18:48

15 years - we are currently looking for W new one!

Blossomtoes · 18/06/2021 18:50

You live in an officers’ mess that’s about to be closed and pop it in the back of your hire van when you move out! 😉

Mintjulia · 18/06/2021 18:51

Two sofas, bought 2002. Still like new. The covers are removable so some of them have been dry cleaned.

Wegobshite · 18/06/2021 18:51

Mines about 8 months old
Paid just under 4000 for it last Oct
The previous one we had for about 10 years I think

CoffeeWithCheese · 18/06/2021 18:52

Conservatory wicker one however must be a good 25 years old now as my Nanna bought it for mum and Nan's been dead decades now. It's probably survived so well as it's uncomfortable as fuck so no one really sits on it but the dog.
