To ask how old your sofa is?

Purchasing a new property with DP, we currently have a blue bulky recliner sofa. It only seats two people. I want to get a new bigger one, that isn’t blue or pleather, he says i’m being unreasonable as the sofa is only 2 years old…

I was scrolling the sofology website and they’re giving 20 year guarantees on sofas- i couldn’t imagine having mine for that long!

How old is your sofa and how often do you replace it?

OP posts:
SpeedofaSloth · 18/06/2021 21:01

16 years, no intention to replace it.

EgSk · 18/06/2021 21:13

Mine is nearly 5 years old . We spent a couple thousand on it and now that we have kids I completely regret my choice of a light fabric haha ! We will replace it eventually but it’s still in great shape minus the stains .

Rayna37 · 18/06/2021 21:26

We have leather ones from DH's last house, approx 15 years old and my sofa and chair bought 11 years ago. All going strong, money not an issue at all but not likely to replace any time soon!

3LittleDucksQuack · 18/06/2021 21:32

About 7 years. Still in good condition just needs a clean. But changing decor and need a bigger one now. So will be looking soon

RoseMartha · 18/06/2021 21:33

10 years old. One end where my exh used to laze the springs have gone. But i cant afford another right now. We only have the one three seater sofa.

MrsClatterbuck · 18/06/2021 21:34

Ours is 25 years old. It was very expensive at the time but we purchased it in the sale at half price. It's very good quality leather so I think that's why it has lasted so long plus no kids or dogs. No immediate plans to replace it atm.

Sirzy · 18/06/2021 21:34

2 years old. Just finished battling with those sorting out Harvey’s administration to bet the moment back as it was awful. Now that’s sorted will be replaced ASAP.

Previous sofa was 15 years

PurpleishDahlia · 18/06/2021 21:35

15 years, brown leather. They're good quality, might need new leather in one of the cushions next year but we're not thinking of replacing altogether. However if they were blue and were restricting our decor choices perhaps I'd change them.

wigornian · 18/06/2021 21:38

80 for one of them
5 years the other

Both Parker knoll

Mangomoonlight · 18/06/2021 21:39

20 years?! I won’t be telling DH about that guarantee if we ever by from there!!

Ours is 2 years and I’m already looking Grin

Squiz81 · 18/06/2021 21:40

17 years, but we have replaced the loose covers in that time. I would like new ones as I’d like a different style, but these are comfy and nothing wrong with them so can’t justify it really. It’s more environmentally friendly to not replace things too often 🙂

Ethelswith · 18/06/2021 21:40

I think we got it in about 1994 or 1995.

My DMum still has in use the suite she bought as a newly wed in the 1950s. It's had new loose covers several times and was built to last. Still in excellent condition.

NatalieH2220 · 18/06/2021 21:46

Ours is 10 years old. Two, two seater leather recliners. Two of the recliners have broken so we do need to get another but keep putting it off.

Kona84 · 18/06/2021 21:53

15 years old- chesterfield inherited from My partners nan

dayslikethese1 · 18/06/2021 21:59

My DF is only just now reluctantly talking about replacing his sofa which is over 30 years old and fully sagging by this point. It's been reupholstered at least once. Mine and DPs was bought secondhand when we moved onto our first house 2 years ago so no idea how old it is. It's IKEA but seems pretty solid. 2 years seems like nothing for a big item like a sofa to me but I guess you could sell it.

Mooda · 18/06/2021 22:04

One is 21 years old and one is maybe 6 years old but was second hand. Thought about replacing them but teens are so disgusting so will probably wait another 4 or 5 years now, otherwise I'll just turn into a sofazilla.

wintertime6 · 18/06/2021 22:05

9 years old and hopefully heading to a skip soon when we move house! DH still can't understand why I wouldn't want to bring them with us, but for the past couple of years I've had to put up with the ripped cushions, stains, and cushions that have no life left in them cause I knew we'd be moving. Putting them in a skip is probably the one thing I'm most excited about moving!

Robin233 · 18/06/2021 22:06

Leather - DFS still in good nic 20 years.
Previous one 17 but the tassels had fell off then one of the seat on the armchair collapsed leaving dh with his knees by his ears lol

NerrSnerr · 18/06/2021 22:08

One of ours was given to me by my dad in 2010. I reckon he must have had it for a decade or so before. We bought another second hand in about 2012 but not sure how old it is.

We talk about getting new ones but we've had fridge and dishwasher die this year so maybe in the future.

Scissor · 18/06/2021 22:11

2 armchairs, well into 80 years, another couple Parker Knoll prob only about 60yrs .. Both from family. best buy proper sprung lime green 50's sofa and 2 arm chairs for £20 at auction, children bounced on for over 10 years and then got freecycled. I have a few sofas and the newest is over 10 years old.

RandomUsernameHere · 18/06/2021 22:14

Ours are 7 years old and really worn and tatty. We would replace them but we're planning to move house so will just get new ones for the new house.

Quornflakegirl · 18/06/2021 22:15

12 years and they are in good condition despite going through raising twins.

MajorNeville · 18/06/2021 22:20

Bought in 2010, absolutely no intention of getting another any time soon. I'll be happy for another 10 years. We budgeted with 20 years on our mind.

Ughmaybenot · 18/06/2021 22:20

Probably 6-7 years old. We’ve had them 5 years but bought them second hand (barely used!) for a bargain price. They’re nice leather sofas, good quality and very comfortable, so we have no intention really of changing them for some time.

DowntownFrown · 18/06/2021 22:20

We’ve got two sofas and they’re both 11 years old and starting to look it but they have been through a puppy. two DC and a clumsy DH - think weekly spills of juice / water / curry Hmm we’ll replace when we move, hopefully in the next 18 months.
