To ask how old your sofa is?

Purchasing a new property with DP, we currently have a blue bulky recliner sofa. It only seats two people. I want to get a new bigger one, that isn’t blue or pleather, he says i’m being unreasonable as the sofa is only 2 years old…

I was scrolling the sofology website and they’re giving 20 year guarantees on sofas- i couldn’t imagine having mine for that long!

How old is your sofa and how often do you replace it?

2 months - old one is still going in a friend's house but it really wasn't lasting well (that one was a Sofology one incidentally) and was getting pretty knackered after something horrendous like 5 years.

Mum's is well over 20 years - she's paid to have it reupholstered once as she wanted a change in colour but it's still going strong. Think that one was SCS (we've gone with them this time around as well)

The fact that you're even asking "how often do you replace it?" is insane tbh.

With furniture, you should buy good quality and expect it to last decades. Years later, if it becomes damaged or is falling apart, you decide whether it's worth repairing/reupholstering/restoring it or not. Only then would you consider replacing it.

Furniture isn't a disposable item!

18yrs

thefirstmrsrochester · 18/06/2021 17:37

14 years old, still vvv comfy but in terms of looks, it’s fucked. We want to replace it with navy velvet Chesterfields however that’s on the back burner until our kitten stops clawing.

BikeRunSki · 18/06/2021 17:39

16 years and looking a bit tatty.

SingingSands · 18/06/2021 17:42

15 years old

Frayed at the edges from cats over the years. Still super comfortable.

beela · 18/06/2021 17:42

We have 4 sofas, the oldest (and most expensive) is 21 years old and we've just had new covers for it, so it looks brand new.

Auntienumber8 · 18/06/2021 17:43

15 years and still perfectly fine. We had them made with extra high backs as DH is tall and te fashion at that time was very low back sofas.

cupsofcoffee · 18/06/2021 17:46

Eighteen months or so.

But our one before that was about 16 years old and literally falling apart when we replaced it.

NorthernDramaLlama · 18/06/2021 17:46

Mine is second hand and going strong after 5 years. Bought to replace the very spendy one after it was destroyed by the toddler years. When it's time to replace it, I shall definitely haunt the 'preloved' shops - no way am I ever going to spend £££ again on furniture when a bit of patience can find you some lovely items!

Micky9876 · 18/06/2021 17:46

One is about 10 years old but rarely used. The other 5 are 2 years old. We decided to refurbish some rooms so got new sofas to match.

kowari · 18/06/2021 17:46

Ten years old and should easily last another ten. Why did you buy a blue pleather sofa if you don't like it?

Willowtree999 · 18/06/2021 17:48

16 years, starting to look a bit worn now but still comfy. Is leather so have colour treated it a couple of times to hide worn patches but plenty of life left yet.

IsItAllOverYetPlease · 18/06/2021 17:48

My parents' sofa is over 40 years old. They had it reupholstered about 5 years ago. I'm assured they built them better back then

cappuccinoandcats · 18/06/2021 17:49

30 years. Had it re upholstered and still love it

TheGallopingGourmet · 18/06/2021 17:50

17 years. Was dark brown leather had it reupholstered 3 years ago. Now dark blue/ grey fabric. Still love the style. Very comfy.
Will probably have it reupholstered again in the future.

ProcrastinationIsMySuperPower · 18/06/2021 17:50

8 years. It was bought for our previous home, and it doesn't really suit this house but I can't justify replacing it yet.

MrsFlinch · 18/06/2021 17:55

Ours is about 9 years old They are super comfy still pretty good condition but slowly getting damaged with one of my cats clawing it.
No point getting new ones that are only going to end up the same way.

I’ll only get a new ones if these ones break beyond repair or when scratchy cat is no longer with us. She’s 8 years old now so gonna be a long while yet!

WeirdCatLady · 18/06/2021 17:57

Ours is about 18 years old. Thought about replacing it a couple of years ago but couldn’t find anything we liked more. It’ll no doubt last for a few more years yet.

Saracen · 18/06/2021 17:58

No idea - we got it secondhand six years ago and it was well used by then.

If you can afford a new sofa and you want one, go for it! There are plenty of people who will take the old one off your hands, I'm sure. OTOH if your current sofa was super tatty or soaked in dog wee I would say YABU and you should think of the environment and keep it until it gives up the ghost.

carolinesbaby · 18/06/2021 17:59

Mine is.... 15 years old? I think. Very scruffy now and will be having a new one next year probably.
Currently sitting in an armchair at least 45 years old. Needs reupholstering but won't be getting rid.

FangsForTheMemory · 18/06/2021 18:00

22, but it is a futon and I bought a new mattress for it after 10 years.

EwwSprouts · 18/06/2021 18:00

15 years bought from M&S. Looks fine apart from a small patch DDog used to lean against.

purplecorkheart · 18/06/2021 18:04

A chesterfield about 25 years old. Not purchased about me. I understand it was eye watering expensive to purchase. I have only had to replace the foam insides two seats.

TaylorStan · 18/06/2021 18:05

Mines 6 years old. A leather L one. It's in perfectly good condition and we'd get another 6 years out of it I reckon, but I'm bored of it and want a cosy fabric one so will be swapping it soon.
