To ask how old your sofa is?

Purchasing a new property with DP, we currently have a blue bulky recliner sofa. It only seats two people. I want to get a new bigger one, that isn’t blue or pleather, he says i’m being unreasonable as the sofa is only 2 years old…

I was scrolling the sofology website and they’re giving 20 year guarantees on sofas- i couldn’t imagine having mine for that long!

How old is your sofa and how often do you replace it?

Almost 15 years

ShinyMe · 18/06/2021 18:09

I bought mine in 2000 and it was second hand then. Well, antique I suppose, but reupholstered. It's 1920s I think. It's falling apart though so it will go soon. But I try to keep things for donkey's years. Someone had a go at me on another thread recently for wanting to replace a worn out bag - well, if you could see my sofa you can see that I don't generally just replace broken/old things. I haven't bought any furniture since I bought my house in 2000, apart from a new bed a year ago.

Bluntness100 · 18/06/2021 18:10

The main ones about three years old, the second living room/play room they are ten and fifteen years old. My daughter thinks I should replace them but to be fair they do the job, they are however very low which makes them a little less comfortable than the main living room Ones which are so big and firm they are like massive beds.

I have to be honest, blue pleather sofas don’t sound great…

Just under 12 years. It's perfectly good enough still, although it was only a couple of hundred £ from Asda. We have discussed replacing it, but I'm in no hurry with a 3 year old and a baby. May as well wait until our youngest is old enough not to cover it in anything.
If my partner suggested replacing a two year old sofa, I'd think they'd taken leave of their senses.

muddyford · 18/06/2021 18:12

At least fifteen years. It's air force blue leather, very sleek and modern and comfortable.

GameSetMatch · 18/06/2021 18:12

2 years old, it still looks like new, I buy new cushions regularly though.

MargaretThursday · 18/06/2021 18:13

Our sofa was 2nd hand when we got it 20 years ago.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 18/06/2021 18:13

Ours are nearly 10 years old but were cheap ikea ones and have been bashed about a bit and are in need of replacement now, the side of one is wobbly and they are very saggy

YouLookSoCool · 18/06/2021 18:13

One is 19 years old, one is 14 years old. Can't afford new ones unfortunately.

DGFB · 18/06/2021 18:14

2 years, hoping it lasts another 10. Yeah, replacing a sofa every two years is potentially wasteful

Mpsister · 18/06/2021 18:14

About 3 years old. My previous one was about 50 years old ( but was recovered 😂)

bloodywhitecat · 18/06/2021 18:14

I have no idea, it was given to me when I left ex-H and moved into my own place. I have had it for 5 years and have no plans to replace it any time soon even though I hate the colour and the velour fabric.

MrsFin · 18/06/2021 18:15

About 20 years old. But it was quite expensive when we bought it.
It's not quite as good as new, but is in pretty good nick actually. No plans to change it, unless we find a smaller house we like enough to move into.

carolinesbaby · 18/06/2021 18:16

Question is, is there such a thing as the 'perfect' sofa? One that is comfy and cozy but not dated looking, affordable but hard wearing and long-lasting, easy to keep clean...

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/06/2021 18:17

3 years old but I think of that as brand new! Will be keep it ages!

That said it’s a very plain, inoffensively colour sofa bed.

Fitforforty · 18/06/2021 18:17

We have 3. Two of them we’ve had them for 7 years. Two of them are second hand so they are much older.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/06/2021 18:18

I also have a small red sofa that might be 8/9 but I think of that as newish too!

Fitforforty · 18/06/2021 18:18

My friend’s is lovely. Her parents bought it in the 70s.

Somuddled · 18/06/2021 18:18

Mine is 8 years old.

MojoJojo71 · 18/06/2021 18:19

Just over 3 years old, I just finished paying for it!

MrsBungle · 18/06/2021 18:19

9 years old. Leather. It’s in great condition but it’s a bit old fashioned now and I want a new one.

yikesanotherbooboo · 18/06/2021 18:20

21 years
15 years
14 years
All absolutely fine still .

Tal45 · 18/06/2021 18:22

About 18 years old, but leather and looks better with age.

DianeCherry · 18/06/2021 18:23

19 years and still going strong

SummerBreeze1980 · 18/06/2021 18:23

Mine is about 9 years old. My BF is horrified and thinks I should replace it but I think it's fine. Has removable covers so I can put in washing machine, plus I have a throw over the seat cushions and arms. The cats have had a bit of a scratch on the arms but the throws covers it! It is still really comfy. I haven't told him my chaise longue is about 15 years old! I got it from a hotel that was closing down and it's really comfy! All that aside, I can't afford new sofas anyway!
