To want us not to wear shoes in the house?

NCShoes · 17/06/2021 20:15

As soon as I walk through the door, I take my shoes off and put slippers on. My partner on the other hand will wear shoes throughout the whole house, and doesn't really take them off until going to bed.

It drives me mad but if I mention anything it can turn into an argument and it's just me 'moaning'. But I hate the thought of walking around outside then walking through the house, on the carpet etc.

The carpet is only a couple of years old and is already looking a bit crap so we're going to get it cleaned but then I think 'what's the point when you're still going to be wearing shoes all around the house?'
Am I being a bit moany?

I mean people who are shoes on in the house

tentosix · 18/06/2021 19:02

I agree with you. A few times the DC walking in the house with dogshit on their shoes was enough for me. Luckily DH agrees with me

MooseBreath · 18/06/2021 22:34

I grew up in a house where we removed our shoes not for cleanliness, but for comfort. I would hate to have me feet in shoes all day and prefer to be barefoot or at least just in socks.

DH grew up wearing shoes in the house. He now wears slippers indoors instead because it bothered me how much dirt was being tracked in.

maddening · 18/06/2021 22:35

Yanbu!

LemonRoses · 18/06/2021 23:09

When you get out of bed in the night are you barefoot? What about when you've just showered and come out of the bathroom? Your bare feet will be getting dirty?! Or do you put shoes on straight away?

No I walk around bare foot quite a lot. Our house is reasonably clean. I don’t ‘always’ wear shoes, but I don’t necessarily bother taking them off when I arrive home. I own slippers, but they’re usually reserved for wearing during very cold weather. Most days I am barefoot until I am about to go out.

It’s not a case of waking and putting shoes on until bedtime, obviously. It’s about not having a seriously dramatic overreaction to shoes being worn inside.

Changednamesorry · 18/06/2021 23:14

I am quite extreme. I think wearing shoes inside is really disgusting. Shoes come off the minute we walk in the door here.

Maggiesfarm · 18/06/2021 23:26

You are not unreasonable at all.

BettyBurntBuns · 18/06/2021 23:27

@bridgetreilly

YABU.

This is one of the single biggest issues any couple needs to decide before moving in together. And by ‘decide’ I mean ‘read all the 150,000 previous MN threads on the subject’ before throwing your phone out of the window and moving somewhere with wooden floors.

Idiot

The issue here is that you have no sensible way of resolving arguments. You have one view; he has another. He engineers a crafty"win" by saying you moan about things. That's not on, is it? It's sexist, because, regardless of the issue, he effectively ignores you by calling you a nag.

ilovepixie · 18/06/2021 23:39

I have never been asked to take my shoes off in anyone's house. I take mine off at home but that's for comfort. And people walking about with manky bare feet that it just gross. Dead feet skin everywhere 🤮🤮

theliverpoolone · 18/06/2021 23:48

Slippers are so much more comfy than shoes, I cant imagine why anyone would prefer shoes to slippers. I sit with my feet tucked up on the sofa, so no way would I want to be wearing shoes indoors.

My neighbour walks out on her path/to the garden in her slippers, which always makes me Shock. What's the point of having indoor slippers if you're going to get them dirty outside??

Anna727b · 18/06/2021 23:49

@TomorrowIsAnotherDae

Shoes off in my house. There is shit, piss, blood, puke, whatever, trod into the streets where I live - the thought of treading the remnants of all sorts of crap around my home makes me 🤢
Yes I agree with you Tomorrowisanotherdae and OP!

I'm not sure that it's sexist because the OP has not actually said that her partner is a man. The pronoun used has been 'they'.

I wear socks, so do most people.

It is customary in some cultures to remove shoes in someone else's house, not just your own. I wouldn't ask a visitor to remove their shoes and obviously everyone would be wearing shoes if I had a party but other than that I don't wear shoes indoors.

Blossomtoes · 19/06/2021 10:24

You wear socks in a heatwave? I don’t wear them at all in the summer. And I detest slippers, I have a shoe like pair lined with sheepskin for the winter. I fell down the stairs and nearly broke my neck in the last pair of conventional slippers I owned.

My feet aren’t covered in dead skin any more than my hands are. Maybe you should exfoliate.
TheKeatingFive · 19/06/2021 11:21

People don’t wear socks in this kind of weather and in general, feet are a lot less cared for than hands.

PattyPan · 19/06/2021 11:28

Normal feet and hands don’t need caring for though do they? The only thing I ever do is put on eczema cream when I get patches on my hands (never get it on feet). So my feet are actually less gross than my hands!

EL8888 · 19/06/2021 11:32

No worries then, he can pay for the new carpet if he doesn’t want to look after it. Let me guess, he doesn’t clean the floors either?

TheKeatingFive · 19/06/2021 11:38

The vast majority of feet are much worse than hands for both sweat and dead skin cells. That’s before you get into specific conditions.

If it doesn’t bother you, cool. I would much prefer if shoes were kept on and I didn’t have to encounter it.

I'd rather have a miniscule amount of sweat and dead skin cells (which are shed by all parts of the body btw) than dog shit, piss and dirt from the streets ta.

You could always have indoor shoes as a compromise.

Outdoor shoes in the house are filthy, especially on carpets (vom).

You suit yourself. I couldn’t get worked up about the microscopic amounts we’re talking about.

You could always have indoor shoes as a compromise.

Why? I don’t have any issues with doing it my way. And I certainly wouldn’t impose these on guests.

You do you, I do me, everything’s fine.

No, it doesn’t bother me. I actually wish it were acceptable to take your shoes off in other indoor places. The reason why feet are sweaty is shoes.
BiteyShark · 19/06/2021 11:48

We have beach type sliders rather than slippers to wear around the house and garden.

Maybe suggest that rather than traditional slippers.
