To want us not to wear shoes in the house?

NCShoes · 17/06/2021 20:15

As soon as I walk through the door, I take my shoes off and put slippers on. My partner on the other hand will wear shoes throughout the whole house, and doesn't really take them off until going to bed.

It drives me mad but if I mention anything it can turn into an argument and it's just me 'moaning'. But I hate the thought of walking around outside then walking through the house, on the carpet etc.

The carpet is only a couple of years old and is already looking a bit crap so we're going to get it cleaned but then I think 'what's the point when you're still going to be wearing shoes all around the house?'
Am I being a bit moany?

Yanbu. I think its gross. Dog shit germs all over people's shoes. Grim AF.

Yes, I'm a typical mumsnetter I guess!

I dont like the feel of shoes and also a germophobe. Blush

Just to add, if anyone offers to take their shoes off in our house I scream a loud Jo, your feet will freeze/get dog hair on/hurt on the flagstone floors.

And ref to PP, we are very well heeled in a very well heeled area, and all my friends are very well heeled indeed!!

actiongirl1978 · 18/06/2021 17:17

*no, not jo

I don’t scream, but it would certainly raise an eyebrow. I always thought it was a suburban affectation (aside from when it’s a cultural norm). Maybe it’s a ‘neutral’ carpets in the ‘lounge’ type thing?

If people arrive in boots, they’d use the rear entrance and leave boots in the boot room if they were filthy, but obviously not just because they happened to be boots.

If a flagstone floor will hurt your feet you really need to spend more time barefoot Shock

@LemonRoses I am the class you are pretending to be but not a snob about it Hmm shoes off here because I live in the city centre, walk most places and the pavement is disgusting.

drpet49 · 18/06/2021 17:52

I genuinely don’t know anyone who wears shoes inside their house. It is grim.

Blossomtoes · 18/06/2021 17:57

I think it is. My carpets are cream, they’ve been down for four years and still look pristine, despite our filthy, grim, germ ridden shoes walking over them every day. 🤷‍♀️

Wearing outdoor shoes all over the house is one thing, but those that then wear those shoes on their beds.. excuse me while I go vomit

inmyslippers · 18/06/2021 18:03

I'd be filing for divorce

TheKeatingFive · 18/06/2021 18:08

Shoes off is predominately a lower middle class thing in the U.K.

I have been on many, many of these threads over the years and my credentials are rock solid. Grin

notsogreenthumb · 18/06/2021 18:10

What happens when children have been playing barefoot in the garden or swimming? Do they have to take their feet off to enter the house?

Your questions are getting more and more ludicrous and patronising. Yes they chop off their feet and enter Hmm. If your child swimming or playing barefoot in the garden picks up the same levels of filth that the shoes you wear every day outdoors, in all areas, including public toilets, then I'd be more concerned about the state of your garden. And FYI I always wash the soles of my child's feet when he comes in from playing in the garden barefoot, mainly because I find sand particles everywhere so niggling and irritating.

And those funny little racks by the door are called shoe racks. Oddly enough they're named after shoes.. I wonder what their purpose could be Grin

This debate can go on till the cows come home. OP to your original question, you aren't being unreasonable in the slightest but your partner and daughter just don't have the same standards as you. Disgusting but what can you do other than remind them/ask them?

TheKeatingFive · 18/06/2021 18:12

I take mine off whenever I go into someone's house

Please don’t do this in my house, I find feet pretty disgusting myself.

TaylorStan · 18/06/2021 18:16

I don't like shoes in the house and we take them off when we come in generally. I just find it disgusting. I'm a bit OCD though admittedly and appreciate everyone isn't like this. If visitors come and they ask if I want them to take their shoes off I say yes. I'm not going to lie. If they don't ask I don't say anything. We have wooden floors downstairs. I will mop after they leave though Grin Shoes on the pale carpets are an absoloute no though so if someone needs to go upstairs for any reason I will ask them to take their shoes off. I do feel a bit awkward about it but my house my rules! I have a drawer upstairs of clean slippers from hotels because I always take a pair on holiday. If someone has taken their shoes off and has bare feet I offer them to them.

Me too. I’d rather have shoes on my carpet than sweaty feet.

But gardens are hardly immune from animal poo and urine.

To be honest, I think the fuss about what might be brought in on shoes is ridiculous. Pavements get washed by the rain, after all, and I've noticed people are way better about picking up dog muck than they used to be. DH and I are totally laissez faire, and our family has managed to avoid the dreadful plagues everyone seems to be so terrified of.

Daphnise · 18/06/2021 18:28

Is it a class thing- working class remove shoes and other classes do not?

PattyPan · 18/06/2021 18:32

Feet are only sweaty and disgusting because people wear shoes so much

@Daphnise well I am not working class and I and everyone I know removes their shoes

Blossomtoes · 18/06/2021 18:36

No, as pointed out up thread, it’s the lower middle class who insist on their homes being shoeless.
Bella43 · 18/06/2021 18:36

I totally agree with you OP. He could have dog's mess on them. My father in law did this once. Walked all through our house with dog's mess on his shoes. He even went upstairs to use the bathroom before he came in properly (I was in the kitchen). Therefore I had to clean the stairs carpet, landing, the bathroom floor then start on living room carpet and finally mop the kitchen. He didn't even realise he'd done it until I said what's that smell? His shoes were caked in it. He'd stepped in it in the street. The smell was horrendous.

proopher · 18/06/2021 18:39

I can't imagine anything less cosy than wearing shoes while relaxing in my own house.

Annehedonia · 18/06/2021 18:43

Do people really wear outdoor shoes all over their house?

That's just gross.

Of course I don't make people take their shoes off when they visit (even though I'd rather they did I can see it's not reasonable to expect it) but as a family we don't wear them other than in the tiled hallway.

PurpleMustang · 18/06/2021 18:46

I would buy a carpet cleaner and make it his job to do and also to do the usual mopping of the other floors. He will soon see how filthy it all is and realise shoes are the cause.

icedancerlenny · 18/06/2021 18:49

Shoes have to come off. Pavements are disgusting and why would you want dirt in your house? I really don’t understand anyone wearing shoes indoors.

HappydaysArehere · 18/06/2021 18:53

Always take our shoes off and take slippers when we are visiting. Can’t stand walking around in outside shoes as you say it ruins carpets so why do it and why not be comfortable.

RichTeaCheddars · 18/06/2021 18:53

@XioXio

When you get out of bed in the night are you barefoot? What about when you've just showered and come out of the bathroom? Your bare feet will be getting dirty?! Or do you put shoes on straight away?

What about when you're just in the house and you haven't been anywhere yet?

Yes, I'd be interested in this too! What about when you get up in the night or in the morning and aren't going anywhere. Are you bare foot?
