Started re-reading the Discworld series (really need something to cheer me up atm) and it just struck me.

Granny Weatherwax - Maggie Smith maybe?

I once saw a theatre production of Guards!Guards! and Vimes was played by Paul Darrow from Blake’s 7. Enjoyed it.

I haven’t thought of my GW yet, nobody has hit on how I imagine her.

(Could we not mention Andrew Scott and Moist in the same sentence, thanks Blush)

SirSamuelVimes · 17/06/2021 23:40

@Nobbynobbsknob

Sorry Sir Mr Vimes sir. It was my grandmother's name sir and I've kept it to remember her by given as how she always called me a knob sir.
sighs wearily Fine, Nobby, just don't go whipping it out in front of his Lordship, alright?
SirSamuelVimes · 17/06/2021 23:41

Sharon Rooney would be a brilliant Perdita, good call!

Goldrill · 17/06/2021 23:48

Vimes is most definitely Sid James.

TheTruthAndNothingButTheTruth · 18/06/2021 00:05

@YesThisIsMe ewwwwwww! Wash your mouth out. No way should the revolting Clarkson be anywhere near anything TP related. Go and clout your DH round the head soundly with a sprig of lilac.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/06/2021 00:28

Andy Serkis for Nobby I bet he could sidle amazingly
Robert Hardy would have been a good Ridicully
Peter Capaldi as Death
Billy Connolly as the wee free men

Needhelp101 · 18/06/2021 01:31

Oh God yes, who would play Death? Peter Capaldi is a good shout.
Is Robert Hardy dead?!

Actually I agree with a PP, if Jeremy Clarkson could act, he'd be a great Ridcully. Buffoonish, noisy, cheerful, right age, right figure, totally oblivious to social graces...

Fuck, I'm describing our PM 😂

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/06/2021 01:48

If we're doing dead actors then clearly Bengt Ekerot from the Seventh Seal is the pick for Death. He's the original and best.

However with living actors you don't need a 'look' as Death would be animatronic. You need a voice. Like Darth Vader being the Green Cross Code man but the voice was James Earl Jones. Who has a voice like tombstones?

And Rufus Sewell is now Vetinari and I will not hear a word about it. Sexy, cold, deep, comedic as well. And eyebrows. Mmmmmmm.

enchantedspleen · 18/06/2021 07:18

I had never thought of Whoopi as Nanny Off, but now you say it... I see it!!!! But still, MM is perfect in my eyes.
Hear me out... a young Danny Dyer as Carrot!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/06/2021 07:26

@crumpet

Nanny Ogg is skinny and wiry isn’t she? I always imagine Granny W as plump
No! Granny Weatherwax is described as on the thin side but remarkably strong. Nanny Ogg is short and fat. Tbf, she's also had loads of children and is very well fed by her many DILs.

Sheila Hancock as Granny Weatherwax for me.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/06/2021 07:27

Ah, apologies Crumpet, I read on and realised you'd already been telt. Grin

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/06/2021 07:37

I always though Jane Horrocks, in her younger days, would be a great Magrat.

I quite fancy Rupert Graves generally for Vimes, he did world-weary-but-dogged-and-determined police officer so well in Sherlock.

Ewan McGregor has the charm for Moist , I think.

John Finnemore for Rincewind, maybe? I definitely want to get him in there somewhere! Oh, and while I'm Cabin Pressure casting, Roger Allam as Ridcully?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/06/2021 07:41

Sadly Robert Hardy is dead - he was 91 when he died in 2017

OccultGnuAsWell · 18/06/2021 07:46

Rather old school but does anyone remember Melvyn Hayes from "It Ain't Half Hot Mum"? played Gloria.

He's always been my Nobby.

(Did NOT think I'd type a sentence like that before 8am on a Friday)

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/06/2021 07:50

Oooh, and Anthony Stuart Head as Vetinari! If you remember him as Giles, he can definitely bring the "edge" the character requires at times.

SoupDragon · 18/06/2021 08:18

Sam Heughan is, unfortunately, far too old to be Carrot

TheTruthAndNothingButTheTruth · 18/06/2021 09:07

Oh no, no to Clarkson. He’s a misogynist pig and violent to boot. There’s no place for him in TP ranks of heroes (and Ridcully is awesome!)

YesThisIsMe · 18/06/2021 09:12

Roger Allam is subtle. Ridcully is anything but. I agree that the late great Robert Hardy would have been brilliant.

Sam Vimes of Cable Street is actually canonically the original mentor of Roger Allam’s cynical old copper in Endeavour.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/06/2021 09:15

Roger Allam can be subtle, of course, but I reckon he's got the pipes to also pull off the Ridcully Boom.

HelloPudding · 18/06/2021 09:33

I think that Shirley from EastEnders has a very Granny W look to her. The glare, the cheekbones, the hardened-by-life set of the mouth.

TheTruthAndNothingButTheTruth · 18/06/2021 09:43

Oh I have a soft spot Ridcully and more importantly, so does Granny W Grin I mean obviously he is absolutely awful but hilarious and deceptively clever and every now and then rises above the foolishness of the wizards so I'm sticking with my anti-Clarkson stance.

Blimey, I never thought I'd ever get heated on a TP thread, Discworld is my happy place Smile

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/06/2021 09:54

Whoever said Ian Glen as Vimes is genius. I wouldn’t have thought of him, but perfect.

Vimes has a Scottish accent in my head, although I’m pretty sure Terry Pratchett did not intend that!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/06/2021 09:55

I always wondered why he didn’t do Sir Friendzone (forgotten real name of GOT character) Scottish as I think of Bear island as in Scotland!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/06/2021 10:06

I would say Danny Dyer is more Nobby than Vimes!

Yes I can see Whoopi Goldberg as NO, but also MM.

Maggie Smith would give good Granny Weatherwax I think.

Someone like Damien Lewis would be Carrot in my eyes- he’s meant to be very attractive.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/06/2021 10:06

Oh god you said Carrot - definitely not DD!
