Started re-reading the Discworld series (really need something to cheer me up atm) and it just struck me.

Granny Weatherwax - Maggie Smith maybe?

Nanny Ogg is skinny and wiry isn’t she? I always imagine Granny W as plump

She wouldn't work for me but mainly because she seems to be such a horrible person irl. I couldn't get past it.

Julie Walters as GW?

Ruth Wilson as Spike.

No. The exact opposite according to the descriptions in the book. Granny is also often described as a handsome woman (much to her chagrin )

GW is always described as quite ascetic whereas Nanny Ogg loves a drink, has all her daughters in law running round doing the cooking etc...

Charles Dance was amazing as Vetinari, I couldn't cast anyone else.

I always imagined Vetinari as the late, great Jeremy Hardy (playing a similar role as he did in Hamish & Douglas as The Laird).

And absolutely yes to Eileen Atkins as Granny Weatherwax (GW being my all-time hero)!

Cate Blanchett would make a good GW if she was older.

Agree Charles Dance as Vetinari. And Whoopi Goldberg would be an amazing Nanny Ogg! I think MM would be fine at the jolly old lady aspect but Whoopi would do that and the sudden shift to the steely interior! (The "don't go thinking I'm nice. I'm only nice compared to Esme, and so is practically everybody"* Ogg.)

When I first started reading Discworld, I visualized Vetonari as that short kinglet in Shrek.. y'know the arsehole one. But having read almost all the books, I don't have that image any more thank goodness! Vetinari is much too sexy and smart.

You’re right iklboo, Dan would be a great CMOT, although that would leave him slightly typecast in the dubious meat product department. I guess it’s a step up in the world being outside the pie.
