Started re-reading the Discworld series (really need something to cheer me up atm) and it just struck me.

Granny Weatherwax - Maggie Smith maybe?

Penelope Keith, in her Margot days, would have been a rather fabulous Lady Sybil.

No, no, no - Stephanie Cole and Graham Crowden in their “Waiting For God” era as Granny Weatherwax & Ridcully

Stephanie Cole has always been Granny Weatherwax for me.

When I saw Guards Guards on stage, Paul Darrow (sadly now deceased) did a very good Vimes

Waiting for God was brilliant, I used to watch it as a kid. Agree that Stephanie Cole would have been a great Granny W.

Give it another twenty years, and I'd be willing to let Meryl Streep have a go. I always loved the description of young Esmeralda W in Lords and Ladies, "you could bounce rocks off her pride". Streep does a good proud face.

I've been rereading the Watch novels and now can't stop seeing Paddy Considine as Vimes.

Stephen Fry (in full Melchett mode) as Ridcully?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/06/2021 12:56

I struggle with Stephen Fry as Ridcully because Ridcully comes across as a sporty, hunting, shooting and fishing type. SF doesn’t give off that outdoors, countryside vibe. Brian Blessed has more of that vibe for me.

SirSamuelVimes · 26/06/2021 14:44

Hmm, true. I worry BB would just do the buffoonery aspect though, whereas I see Ridcully as actually being quite intelligent and shrewd underneath - which is why he's survived so long!

CaptainCallisto · 26/06/2021 15:02

I thought Timothy West did a good Ridcully in the Sky adaptations.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread #notsorry but was watching the I.T Crowd yesterday and was thinking that Matt Berry would make (aged up a bit), a good Ridcully.
Instead of "Faaaaatheeer", it'd be "Bursaaar!" 😁

As you were.
