Started re-reading the Discworld series (really need something to cheer me up atm) and it just struck me.

Granny Weatherwax - Maggie Smith maybe?

I love you all for this thread :)

SirSamuelVimes · 16/06/2021 00:28

Gwendoline Christie for Angua?

TheTruthAndNothingButTheTruth · 16/06/2021 00:56

Agree Paddy Considine would be great for Vimes and I do think Miranda Hart would make a good Sybil.
Andrew Scott for Moist
James Norton for Carrot.
She's too young now but in 20 yrs - Daisy May Cooper for Nanny Ogg
Tony Robinson would have been a good Nobby a few years ago.
I can't pin point Colon or Granny W.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/06/2021 01:32

I will allow Luke Evans or Sam Heughan as Carrot. I'm generous like that Grin

The problem with Granny is that she so clear in my head that no one is her. They need some unknown character actor who is her. And has never been anything else.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/06/2021 01:33

Toby Jones for Nobby or is he too old (and clearly human)?

Needhelp101 · 16/06/2021 02:14

@TheTruthAndNothingButTheTruth

Agree with almost all of these. Miranda as Sybil, definitely. She's got that kind of clanging upperclass confidence together with kind of shy, rather beautiful vulnerability.

I also thought of Tony Robinson as Nobby, he's basically a slightly more intelligent Baldrick Smile

God I need to go to bed 😊

Oh, and yes to Nick Frost for Colon!

I think the live action movies had perfect casting wouldn't change a thing. The animated series were also good and Tony Robinson in the audio tapes nailed it also. This city watch thing looked massively suspect who in omms name thought they knew better about characters and development than sir Terry pratchett? If you really want a good Terry pratchett experience go to one of his adapted for stage plays. He wrote in a way where it was mainly the character and their actions that explained their outward appearance. And if anyone is a massive discworld fan Josh kirby has produced some face masks. Now I'm off to sing a song about hedgehogs and have my dried frog pills!!!!!

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 16/06/2021 02:39

IMO they got the castings very well done for the adaptations they did on Sky. Although I preferred David Jason as Albert over Rincewind.

Richard Coyle and Claire Foy as Moist and Adora were great, as was Michelle Dockery as Susan. And as mentioned by many, Charles Dance as Vetenari was bloody excellent.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 16/06/2021 02:40

Vetinari

TheTruthAndNothingButTheTruth · 16/06/2021 23:09

I think Nick Frost might be a little short for Colon, combine him with a younger Jim Broadbent and you'd be there!

Needhelp101 · 17/06/2021 00:49

Have just thought, she's a little young but Emma Thompson would be a fantastic Granny Weatherwax.

OP posts:
SirSamuelVimes · 17/06/2021 07:48

I thought a young, somehow shorter Jim Broadbent might do for Nobby! Perhaps he can magically do both?! Grin

I think Emma Thompson as GW would be too close to Nanny McPhee.

Amrapaali · 17/06/2021 20:59

Probably Joely Richardson for Magrat

Nobbynobbsknob · 17/06/2021 21:03

I'd like Tony Robinson to play me please

trebleclef101 · 17/06/2021 21:08

I always thought Rhys Ifans would make a good Rincewind

SirSamuelVimes · 17/06/2021 21:17

Nobby! This is your commander talking. That username is bloody rude - sort it out!

(But yes, Tony Robinson is a good shout)

Elisheva · 17/06/2021 21:29

I wondered about James Nesbitt for Commander Vimes, and Tilda Swinton and Jo Brand for Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg.
I like Chris Evans for Captain Carrot, he is suitably clean cut.

SirSamuelVimes · 17/06/2021 21:36

Agree on Chris Evans, so long as he can lose the American accent.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 17/06/2021 21:58

How about Rufus Sewell for Vetinari? And Philip Glennister from about a decade ago for Vimes.

YesThisIsMe · 17/06/2021 22:07

Rufus Sewell is an excellent shout for Vetinari. I’m disappointed in myself for not thinking of him.

Thelnebriati · 17/06/2021 22:11

Paddy Considene as Vimes is genius. I always picture him as a more, ahem, streetwise Captain Carrot.

Nobbynobbsknob · 17/06/2021 22:12

Sorry Sir Mr Vimes sir. It was my grandmother's name sir and I've kept it to remember her by given as how she always called me a knob sir.

YesThisIsMe · 17/06/2021 22:17

DH has just come up with the brilliant suggestion of Jeremy Clarkson as Ridcully - if only he could act.

Sharon Rooney is the only possible casting for Perdita X Nitt.

CaptainCallisto · 17/06/2021 22:20

I think Linda Bassett would be a good GW (though she's perhaps a little stout if we're going for aesthetics). She's perfect acting wise, and her steely glare could stop Death in his tracks.
