Started re-reading the Discworld series (really need something to cheer me up atm) and it just struck me.

Granny Weatherwax - Maggie Smith maybe?

I do love a Pratchett thread, they're just so nice. So much of Mumsnet just seems so toxic and angry atm, whereas a Pratchett appreciation thread is like the internet version of a lovely hot cup of tea and a biscuit.

Weepingwillows12 · 19/06/2021 09:57

Daved Tennant as Carcer is a great shout. I love these threads too but I never actually like any Pratchett tv shows as they never quite get the humour across properly. I think it could work for a Guards series.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 19/06/2021 11:38

Idris Elba for Vimes.

I agree. Smile

Brew Biscuit (friendly biscuit)

GW would have been a brilliant MNer, though. In the custardo-on-teen-behaviour-threads vein.

CaptainCallisto · 19/06/2021 13:38

What do we think to Toby Jones for Reg Shoe? I think he'd do earnest zombie rather well.

ItIsAShameAboutRay · 19/06/2021 17:04

Somehow I always picture Reg as slightly taller and thinner than Toby Jones, but TJ would do earnest very well though!

Idris is too big to be Vimes, I see him as shorter, tough and wiry.

Basically Stephen Briggs need to be everyone because his voices are so perfect in the audio books Grin I love Carrot being Welsh, it's just wonderful.

I've never watched any of the TV adaptions, are they worth seeing or best avoided?

CaptainCallisto · 19/06/2021 17:14

I too picture Reg as taller, but I couldn't really think if anyone tall that said Reg to me... I think Rowan Atkinson would probably do it well, but he's still not quite right for me either.

I thought Going Postal was wonderful. Brilliantly cast all round. Hogfather was also very good. I hated David Jason as Rincewind (though loved him as Albert) so Colour of Magic was a miss for me.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/06/2021 17:16

Richard E Grant could be Mr Slant and not just because it rhymes.

Possibly Robbie Coltrane as the Dean

Weepingwillows12 · 19/06/2021 17:32

In my view the tv adaptations are usually reasonably well cast and acting is fine but so much of Pratchett is the play on words etc and scene descriptions so you just cant capture all the greatness on tv. They always disappoint me but they arent bad eitherif that makes any sense....

Sunbird24 · 19/06/2021 22:28

I reckon Stephen Tompkinson could do an earnest zombie…

Some are very good, they don't capture all the nuance but they bring some other dimensions. Like the better stagings the good adaptations do capture the spirit and they tend to have good casts.

Just don't go within a million miles of The Watch on TV

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/06/2021 23:44

Yes to both Miriam and Maggie as Nanny Ogg and Esme Weatherwax!!

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/06/2021 02:13

David Tennant as Carcer is genius.

Add that to the laminated sheet.

Oh yes - good shout!

Yes!

So many good suggestions so far.
This is like the imaginary Harry Potter casting, we've got to get the cream of British acting talent in it 😁

Perhaps Robbie Coltrane for Ridcully? Richard E. Grant would definitely be a perfect Mr Slant.

KJ Apa from the dreadful Riverdale as Carrot!

ItIsAShameAboutRay · 20/06/2021 11:12

OMG I just googled the watch and the actors! Had anyone involved even touched a TP book never mind read one? What a load of cobblers. As suggested, will completely avoid.

GrouchyKiwi · 20/06/2021 13:02

KJ Apa is cute and has an earnest face. Carrot with a Kiwi accent might be interesting, Twitchy.

ISaySteadyOn · 20/06/2021 14:32

I love these threads. For all those saying Sheila Hancock as GW, she's done it! I am listening to Wyrd Sisters on BBC sounds and that's who she plays.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 20/06/2021 21:51

@ISaySteadyOn I didn’t know a radio version of WS even existed!

SisterMaryLoquacious · 20/06/2021 21:59

Yes the radio version of WS is on Sounds for the next 11 days in 4 half hour episodes.

Pretty good, but I seem to recall it randomly changes the ending with the Fool’s parentage.

BlueChampagne · 22/06/2021 13:40

Andy Serkis for the librarian (with CGI)

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 23/06/2021 10:03

I've found all the TV adaptations a bit lacking. None of them have developed the world enough, & it's all a bit panto. Really bright grading, & everyone in costume-drama outfits.

MrsWooster · 25/06/2021 10:53

Watching Sheila Hancock on ‘Canal Journeys’ has changed my allegiance from CampFionaShaw to CampSheila for GW!
