The law just cannot be allowed to tell people what to think.

Hurrah for Maya!

Absolutely. It's scary how close we came to this being a possibility (not being able to say sex is real, binary and matters). Thank you to the women who are braver than me, who stood up and who stopped this happening. Maya, your views are worthy of respect.

WeeFae · 10/06/2021 11:34

Hurrah for Maya!

We won't be silenced.

BarbarianMum · 10/06/2021 11:35

I know I should be pleased but really I'm just scared at how we came to the point of this needing to be appealed in the first place?

Lonel · 10/06/2021 11:35

Absolutely! I am shocked by how many people seem to think that women are people too.

CatrinVennastin · 10/06/2021 11:36

YANBU

Hopefully Marion Miller will be acquitted too.

RedthroatedCaracara · 10/06/2021 11:36

YANBU

It's wonderful to have this clarified

No one can be forced to profess a belief they do not hold like "transwomen are women"

Yes! It is frightening that common sense had to go to court.

Exactly. To people thinking that this will have a negative impact on trans people, listen to Joanna Cherry QC explaining how this will not allow hate speech or other discrimination, but will protect the belief that sex is real and important (a main gender critical idea) and will stop people being able to discriminate against gender critical people.

Cyberworrier · 10/06/2021 11:38

Would probably help if I say where! At 8.47 am on the Today Progamme on Radio 4

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 10/06/2021 11:38

The original judgement seemed such an affront to reality that’s it’s such a relief to hear that her appeal has been successful.

MedusasBadHairDay · 10/06/2021 11:38

It's good news, the problem is getting the actual truth of what happened and what she was fighting for to break through all the disinformation out there.

SunnyintheSun · 10/06/2021 11:38

So proud of Maya. She has been dignified and gone high when others have gone low and revealed their true colours.

peadarm · 10/06/2021 11:39

Common sense may be too 'common' for some in the academic community. Edinburgh University actually tell their staff that “reasonable concerns” is itself “a big red flag phrase” when used by women.

MouseyTheVampireSlayer · 10/06/2021 11:40

Lady Fidget I think you've got your terminology muddled up. Trans women refers to male people who believe they have a feminine gender identity. I think you are referring to trans men, who are biologically female, whilst affecting a male appearance.
I understand how you could be confused given the terminology.

WotgunShedding · 10/06/2021 11:41

That's your belief ladyfidget which you are entitled to hold. Equally, I'm also allowed to believe that sex is real and therefore not share your belief.

That's the point of today's ruling (from what I understand).

Datun · 10/06/2021 11:41

LadyFidgetAndHerHandbag

That's what the judgement today was all about.

We don't need to learn anything.

It's a perfectly legitimate belief to say that sex is binary, it's real, it's based on biology (how else could it be a protected characteristic was one of the conclusions today).

And any detriment suffered to people who hold this belief, can be subject to legal recourse.

Have you read the judgment?
SlipperyDippery · 10/06/2021 11:43

Ah that was an untimely deleted post - it was there when I quoted it!

@LadyFidgetAndHerHandbag happy to discuss the judgment once you’ve read and digested it.

Given that Maya's stated belief is that "trans women aren't women" I think I've got my terminology correct.

Hang on, I've been deleted? What the fuck for?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 10/06/2021 11:44

It’s a relief but how deep is the instructional capture that a woman has to go to court to defend her belief in biology.

MouseyTheVampireSlayer · 10/06/2021 11:44

Well she's right though.
