AIBU to ask if you wear a dress without even thinking about it?

Let me explain.

I'm a very casual dresser. You'll find me in joggers, jeans and Hush harem pants, with a t shirt or sweatshirt, weather dependent. And I stick to this uniform all year round

I don't own a single dress - well, I didn't until yesterday. When on a whim I bought 3. And I've put one on today and I keep inwardly thinking ' OH MY GOD! I'm wearing a dress!' as it feels so alien to me to do so. Like I should be going to a bloody garden party or something - and this is just a jersey midi dress with nicely covering short sleeves and goes well with trainers etc

So .. what do you wear day to day if you're not leaving the house? Would you even consider putting a dress on?

Yes to dresses
No to being self conscious about it

I like my clothes!

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 06/06/2021 12:25

One of my favourite ones at the moment (have it in various colours). Light, loose, cool enough and plenty of coverage. Oh and POCKETS!! Grin

I have one dress. I have worn it once - for a relative's wedding three years ago.

atomicnotsoblonde · 06/06/2021 12:27

I LOVE dresses. I wear them every day or sometimes a skirt. You can style them up or down, but they se my absolute go to wardrobe collection. I live in them. Embrace the dress!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/06/2021 12:27

iloveyou you sound like a candidate for a Snag conversion. They say they made tights wearable, they aren't kidding. I hate tights, fucking awful uncomfortable things. Snags are bloody excellent!

Knittedfairies · 06/06/2021 12:28

I've got one dress, so far unworn. I bought it to go to a christening but didn't go because I was ill. The next occasion where I planned to wear it - a wedding - was called off. The Golden Wedding anniversary party was cancelled due to Covid. If anyone wants to borrow it for an event they don't want to go to, I'm open to offers.

guerrillagirl · 06/06/2021 12:29

I love me a knee length denim shirt dress - I have way too many in my wardrobe...

Does anyone remember the mumsnet "school run dress'? I reckon it's due a comeback! When I first heard it, I assumed it was about fashion in the school run but I was wrong! It was very practical.

The idea was you had a dress that was really easy to wear, so whatever you were getting up to in the day - eg maybe getting covered in baby food / baby sick / paint / whatever, or just sitting at home in comfy clothes while BFing, you had a dress that was really easy to wear that you could just pop on for the school run and know you look look vaguely presentable without having to think about it.

I wear a dress almost every day.
I always wear dresses for work and if going out.
I don't find jeans particularly comfortable.
In the summer is sometimes wear linen trousers but most days it's a dress.

I have a mix of smarter and casual dresses.

Chienloup · 06/06/2021 12:31

I wear a dress almost every si gle day (I occasionally wear a jumpsuit). I like not having to co-ordinate tops and bottoms and I like not having a waist band. A dress just feels easy - something I can chuck on and that's me done.

Chipsahoy · 06/06/2021 12:31

I started wearing dresses and skirts regularly a few years ago. For a few months it was like you said, I felt so weird and self conscious. Keep wearing them and you will get used to them.

I have casual dresses and skirts and wear them around the house. Going nowhere but a family swim later and I’m in a short tan skirt and black T-shirt. I don’t really do casual wear much at all.

PawsQueen · 06/06/2021 12:31

These are the type I tend to wear. Dorothy Perkins tall range and (old) a polish brand which was for fuller bust but has shut

@AccidentallyOnPurpose where is that from? It's lovely!

Darkbrownistheriver · 06/06/2021 12:32

Sadly not. I’ve always struggled with dresses, because I have extra ginormous boobs and always look like a ship in full sail. Only time I could get away with it was when I was pregnant with DD. I’ve also put on a lot of weight, so boobs are even bigger - they arrive in a room five minutes before the rest of me!

ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind · 06/06/2021 12:33

I don’t own any jeans or joggers or harem pants(seriously? Haram pants?😂)

OldTurtleNewShell · 06/06/2021 12:34

I wear dresses a lot. I find them the comfier and more casual option. This is because I'm quite round in the middle and it means jeans never fit properly and are horribly uncomfortable.
I don't get why people think dresses are the less practical option. A good wrap dress feels like going out wearing a dressing gown, except more socially acceptable, and maxi dresses just need a single pull over the head and you're ready to go.
Waaay easier than faffing about with belts, buttons, zips and working out what top goes with which bottom.

OldTurtleNewShell · 06/06/2021 12:35

Also adding, I also have huge boobs. If you're going for fitted dresses, they never do but stretchy flowy types usually do very well.

TheFairyCaravan · 06/06/2021 12:36

I recently bought this dress from Next. It’s got pockets. I got the striped one too. It is big though so you need to size down. A lot of reviews say it’s got big arm holes however you can’t see my bra when I’ve got it on and my arms are tiny.

CharlotteRose90 · 06/06/2021 12:36

It’s a nope for me. I’m far more comfier in jeans, shorts etc. If I’m on holiday then maybe I’ll wear a dress. I wear a skirt as part of my work uniform and can’t wait to get it off every day. Means shaving my legs all the time and tanning them so too much effort.

Appuskidu · 06/06/2021 12:37

Which one did you get? @TheFairyCaravan
Bythemillpond · 06/06/2021 12:37

I think I stopped wearing dresses when I found that it was a choice between a short dress that showed off my knees (I have not great legs and even worse knees) or longer ones that trailed on the ground. (I am quite short.

I used to have a couple of skirts and a dress that finished mid calf but they wore out and now I just go around in combats and T shirt

Chikapu · 06/06/2021 12:37

I don't own any dresses, they just aren't my style and I feel uncomfortable in them.

MoiraRose4 · 06/06/2021 12:37

Yep, dresses are so much more comfortable than trousers, and they’re easier because you don’t need to match with a top. I’ve put weight on my stomach over the last year, and a lot of my trousers and shorts are too tight, but my dresses still fit.

gurglebelly · 06/06/2021 12:37

Dresses are a no for me, I feel uncomfortable in them and fat legs mean that I have to carefully think about undergarments to avoid chub rub (and then worry about flashing the bottom of the unattractive shorts if I lean forward or when I'm sitting)

Teessider · 06/06/2021 12:37

@ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind trust me, once you wear the Hush pants, you never go back. And no - they're not MC Hammer type harems! Just black slouchy comfortable ones that team well with a fitted t shirt. Check them out! I have 8 pairs, such is my love
