Let me explain.

I'm a very casual dresser. You'll find me in joggers, jeans and Hush harem pants, with a t shirt or sweatshirt, weather dependent. And I stick to this uniform all year round

I don't own a single dress - well, I didn't until yesterday. When on a whim I bought 3. And I've put one on today and I keep inwardly thinking ' OH MY GOD! I'm wearing a dress!' as it feels so alien to me to do so. Like I should be going to a bloody garden party or something - and this is just a jersey midi dress with nicely covering short sleeves and goes well with trainers etc

So .. what do you wear day to day if you're not leaving the house? Would you even consider putting a dress on?

From May to September I mostly wear long, loose cotton dresses with flat sandals. They hide my legs and are far more comfortable than trousers.

@Teessider the feeling of bare legs under a dress will feel weird at first, but you’ll really appreciate it when we have the next really hot day!

Apart from one pair of gym leggings, I don’t own any trousers! I work on farms but can still climb a fence and wrangle a sheep quite easily! It’s mostly out of laziness, just throw one on and you’re done!

cupsofcoffee · 06/06/2021 12:04

I love a dress as you don't need to co-ordinate multiple items of clothing Grin

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/06/2021 12:06

Next. They have shapes that they repeat every year in different lengths and/or fabrics. So now I wait until they have a sale and buy them cheap.

I get the stretchy fake wrap dresses and the linen / cotton rich shift dresses and one of the looser shapes with straps.

Appuskidu · 06/06/2021 12:07

I wear dresses most days-they are so comfortable!

SerpentGuard · 06/06/2021 12:08

I only wear a dress when abroad, never in UK

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/06/2021 12:08

And yes, your Monsoon dress is one I'd wear quite happily.

Unsure33 · 06/06/2021 12:09

I wear dresses and trainers or converse to work . Love that dress . My wardrobe is all dresses but I Hate my arms so have to wear a cotton cadi with sleeveless ones .

Keep the joggers off. Seriously.. do I look like someone that you should listen to?

Long, boring, colour blocked. Basically oversized tshirt , with a weird shape to make it "special". 😂😂

I wore dresses all the time when I was working. Now I'm retired I live in jeans/leggings. I'm going out for afternoon tea later and am wearing a linen shift dress over leggings.

AuntieMarys · 06/06/2021 12:09

I don't own a dress or a skirt. Never have apart from my wedding day. I always feel overdressed.

CounsellorTroi · 06/06/2021 12:10

Also wear maxis occasionally.

Hufflepuffsunite · 06/06/2021 12:12

I wear dresses all the time. I'm wearing one today and all I've done so far is housework! I am an odd shape though - I find trousers very uncomfortable (unless leggings). Dresses are much comfier and more flattering on me.

TheFairyCaravan · 06/06/2021 12:12

I wear lots of dresses, especially in the Summer. They’re just so easy. I like this style from Joules, just the striped ones, not the floral ones for wearing in the house etc. I’d put one of those Monsoon ones on if I was going out for the day, but that’s just me, you do you.

KingdomScrolls · 06/06/2021 12:12

I wear dresses all the time I tend towards skinny legs and a bit of a tummy so look better in dresses than jeans, casual dresses are much more comfortable in the heat than jeans or denim shorts IMO

NotMeNoNo · 06/06/2021 12:12

I want to see some of these everyday dresses. I can't get away from the dressed up feeling either.
I can just about manage winter with opaque tights but summer is impossible. Pasty legs, no. Below knees, no (proportions wrong). Leggings, no. I'm stuck.

smallspeckbigcloud · 06/06/2021 12:12

I wear dresses whenever its warm enough. I find them much more comfortable than anything else and love the sense of freedom of movement - I feel more constrained by most trousers and skirts.

Beetlewing · 06/06/2021 12:12

I have a couple of summer dresses I can just put on and go, but generally yes I'm with you, I feel like I have to live up to wearing a dress somehow.

Standrewsschool · 06/06/2021 12:12

I never wore dresses until last year, apart from summer maxi dresses. Tentatively brought some and now wear them all year round. What helps is the midi/maxi fashion - previous dresses were too short. The current fashions suit my figure more. Saying that, don’t tend to wear them lounging around the house, but change into them when going out.

The dresses you’ve posted are lovely. I found I felt a little over dressed at first, compared to jeans, but you do get use to it.

Wonderwine · 06/06/2021 12:13

I hardly ever wear dresses. I have a couple I might take on a hot beach holiday (ha, ha, if only...) and a couple for weddings/ parties etc.

But I hate them. I usually feel cold in them and I hate all the faff over what shoes to wear and if I need a jacket or cardigan that matches.

Also, I know this is weird, but I kinda feel that dresses were invented for men's benefit - I always find myself thinking of costume dramas where some bloke is hitching up the maid's dress for a quick shag Confused.

I feel vulnerable in a dress and I also feel they are entirely impractical for most of the things I enjoy doing (hiking, cycling, gardening etc)?

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 06/06/2021 12:13

I don’t wear anything but dresses. If I’m not leaving the house I might just wear leggings and a vest top / jumper but even have just slobby about the house dresses. I’m short and fat and buying trousers and jeans is an absolutely nightmare, plus I hate my fat rolls being exposed by T-shirt’s and jeans. It never ever looks right, I tuck in and look hideous, I don’t tuck and look frumpy and messy. I always wear leggings with short dresses which I know is a cardinal fucking sun in MN but in the real world looks a millions times better than any trouser outfit I was stuffed into. Maxi / midi dresses are usually worn with shorts underneath to stop chaffing. I’m much more comfortable in dresses.

Gladioli23 · 06/06/2021 12:14

I wear dresses or a skirt pretty much every day. I wear them for gardening, for DIY, for going out, for sitting round the house. The only exception is for being a scout leader.

They're comfy and they don't have waistband that has to sit in a fixed place which is my primary grouch with trousers.

coathangerdays · 06/06/2021 12:14

I like a pocket for my phone, mask etc and hate having to carry a bag all the time without one.

So that means most dresses I have are only worn for work meetings where I have to have a bag of stuff anyway.

With tights and ankle boots usually.

Dresses with pockets I'd actually trust to hold a phone so I can listen to my podcast as I wander around the house doing stuff, or go for a walk with earphones in - rare things.

Yes I find linen shifts absolutely the best and most comfortable thing to wear when sightseeing abroad in hot weather.
