AIBU to ask if you wear a dress without even thinking about it?

Let me explain.

I'm a very casual dresser. You'll find me in joggers, jeans and Hush harem pants, with a t shirt or sweatshirt, weather dependent. And I stick to this uniform all year round

I don't own a single dress - well, I didn't until yesterday. When on a whim I bought 3. And I've put one on today and I keep inwardly thinking ' OH MY GOD! I'm wearing a dress!' as it feels so alien to me to do so. Like I should be going to a bloody garden party or something - and this is just a jersey midi dress with nicely covering short sleeves and goes well with trainers etc

So .. what do you wear day to day if you're not leaving the house? Would you even consider putting a dress on?

@Teessider

I see so many dresses I like but my requirements are very exacting and it really does knock out a lot of options

No cap sleeves or sleeveless - they must be to the elbow almost or longer

Nothing above the knee

Nothing maxi

Nothing skater style

Nothing synthetic feeling

Nothing too flouncy

Oh and absolutely no tunics or anything draping

It's the size of the sleeves that will make it tricky to find "perfect" ones.

I ordered this last week and it's great! Sleeves way too short for you though.

Teessider · 08/06/2021 19:49

@AccidentallyOnPurpose those sleeves are on the cusp of what I find acceptable actually. What slightly puts me off that dress is the 'flounce' of the skirt. I'd feel like a flamenco dancer in it!

It's lovely though but it just doesn't fit my exacting criteria Grin

You're probably taller and slimmer than me

Toast dresses are usually good for nice roomy pockets.

Some styles of dresses are quite easy to make, so I sometimes do that and put pockets in – and I've quite often added pockets to other dresses too, if they're loose-fitting on the skirt, by fitting them into the side seams.

Dunno about taller, but definitely not slimmer.

Size 18 here, waddling along.Grin

I'd feel like a flamenco dancer in it!
And what's wrong with that!!

Teessider · 08/06/2021 21:14

@notacooldad you're absolutely right 💃🏻

Can I just repeat SNAG CHUB RUB SHORTS for anyone who is not wearing them yet.

Game changers 😬

PeachyPeachTrees · 08/06/2021 21:27

I like pockets in a loose A-line summer dress to put a tissue as I have hayfever all summer! I wouldn't put phone, keys and wallet in them as I'd look like a sack of spuds. I want my DH to see me in my feminine dress and feel proud of me! Wink

rhowton · 08/06/2021 21:28

I genuinely believe people are looking at me when I wear a dress. I also don't wear make up and think people think I look orange if I have it on 😂

notacooldad · 08/06/2021 21:31

After ordering the Monsoon dress yesterday I've ordered this today.

batataharra · 08/06/2021 21:52

OP, you are funny to ask if people wear a dress “without thinking about it.” Grin

Trousers take much more “thinking about.” I always feel really stiff and formal in trousers. Also kind of depressed, Plus you have to find a top and all that business.

I always wear dresses and I love swishy - “flamenco” skirts and ruffles the lot! I like either short or above the knee, but also midi. I feel a bit swamped in maxi dresses. In winter I wear heeled boots and in summer wedge heels. I have to be forced into flat shoes (except trainers for running etc) - I can’t walk properly in normal flat shoes for some reason. I don’t wear much make up, but always have mascara on as the minimum or I feel really washed out.

I bought two dresses today in Ghost actually. One short, one midi and both reduced price. Ganni used to do some lovely dresses, but I haven’t seen anything this year.

@notacooldad

I've just ordered a dress from Popsy to see if like them. Thanks to the person that recommended. And I shall see about the belt loops thing and if I don't like I will ask to be provided without so thanks to that person too You have to ask fir alterations to be done when you order it's FOC but makes the order non returnable. The dress should be easy to sell on though on the pre loved face book page though. Its easy to cut the loops off yourself though.
Thanks. Will see how this one is and if I like them next one order May do without the loops
Teessider · 08/06/2021 22:15

@FightingFiles M&S ones are better! I shan't fight you over it or anything but felt I had to say

Teessider · 08/06/2021 22:17

I ordered these two dresses yesterday (or was it day before? I lose track)

Think they fit my exacting criteria - it's all about that sleeve length. Managed to get a 15% discount too

And now I must stop buying monsoon dresses

Wears dresses all the time, they make me feel put together and are much comfier than jeans

MummyMayo1988 · 09/06/2021 00:20

I'm 32F and very girly. Always have been. I absolutely prefer dresses/skirts to trousers. I only own 2 pairs of jeans and 2 pairs of smart trousers. The rest is dresses and skirts.
I haven't owned a pair of trainers for approx 15 years!
Honestly - I think if you love what you wear and are comfortable; it doesn't really matter. Of course there's nothing wrong with a bit of experimentation if the mood takes you! Happy dress hunting OP! 👗

Spyro1234 · 09/06/2021 02:22

I only wear dresses haha

superstar63 · 09/06/2021 09:32

I am going to try and start wearing dresses as jeans just feel so uncomfortable with a few extra lockdown pounds gained.

I am also looking for some links please to tunic length every day tops to go over 3/4 length leggings as I find them so comfy which is fine in winter with a coat over and long boots but would need something that probably comes to mid thigh rather than just bum covering.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/06/2021 09:46

@superstar63 Have a look at mountain warehouse, I know it's an outdoor shop but their dresses are brilliant for everyday wear, comfortable and inexpensive and don't look 'outdoorsy' atall.

MareofBeasttown · 09/06/2021 10:25

Inspired by this thread and probably by an impending mid-life crisis, I have now bought too many dresses. From Joules, Mango, Uniqlo, Weirdfish and one from New Look of all places. All cotton except one viscose.

superstar63 · 09/06/2021 10:26
@ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind trust me, once you wear the Hush pants, you never go back. And no - they're not MC Hammer type harems! Just black slouchy comfortable ones that team well with a fitted t shirt. Check them out! I have 8 pairs, such is my love

www.hush-uk.com/harem-trousers-black/000741-2822.html
Those Hush harems look so comfy but I think I am too flabby/saggy for them but often see them recommended. I need some structure, ideally jeans but find those uncomfortable now or preferably some leggings with a bit of compression if they were still comfy.

Thank you, `i will have a look there. I just need to get past the self conscious/what the hell do I look like so maybe need to just get used to wearing around the house at first before venturing out lol.

Anydreamwilldo12 · 09/06/2021 19:57

@CaveMum

We should start a list of companies that make dresses with pockets!

From my own wardrobe:

Boden
Fat Face
Jolie Moi

Thanks CaveMum

Ive just bought a bargainous dress from Jolie Moi. I hadn't heard of that company before

Lulu1919 · 09/06/2021 20:03
