Let me explain.

I'm a very casual dresser. You'll find me in joggers, jeans and Hush harem pants, with a t shirt or sweatshirt, weather dependent. And I stick to this uniform all year round

I don't own a single dress - well, I didn't until yesterday. When on a whim I bought 3. And I've put one on today and I keep inwardly thinking ' OH MY GOD! I'm wearing a dress!' as it feels so alien to me to do so. Like I should be going to a bloody garden party or something - and this is just a jersey midi dress with nicely covering short sleeves and goes well with trainers etc

So .. what do you wear day to day if you're not leaving the house? Would you even consider putting a dress on?

I love dresses, as long as they're soft and stretchy, not smart and tailored - it's all about being comfy for me! They're easy, but make just slightly more of a statement I guess. Not in a 'look at me' way, but in a 'I'm confident enough to not have to stick to the jeggings/jeans uniform' way. Iyswim.
Also I buy all mine from charity shops - their selection of dresses is usually better than their other stuff. So cheap as well as brilliant! What's not to like?!

StinkEye · 08/06/2021 15:33

OP - i could have written your post. I am the exact same! Wearing a dress is like an 'experience' for me as i never, ever do it. Just not comfortable i them at all! So glad i'm not alone! Pass me the trackies..

@CaveMum

We should start a list of companies that make dresses with pockets!

From my own wardrobe:

Boden
Fat Face
Jolie Moi

Also Weird Fish Seasalt Woolovers

I don't get the excitement about pockets dresses.
To me they often spoil tbe line of a dress and you cant much in them anyway. Maybe a face mask. Anything heavier is going to make the shape look weird.
However my contribution to dresses with pockets is Popsy dreses.

JuneJustRains · 08/06/2021 15:42

I have dogs, Notacooldad. I need somewhere to put the poo bags (while flaunting my curves/perfect size 8 figure, natch).

Do your clothes have pockets in them @notacooldad?

Think how lost you'd feel if someone sewed them all up so you couldn't use them.

I know the thread is about dresses, but one of my most useful purchases for more inclement weather is a Didriksons parka.

The pockets in it are immense. Four proper pockets on the outside, for phone, snacks, poo bags, hat and gloves, small first aid kit and even a small water bottle, a key pocket and an internal pocket that take an entire OS map. No bag required for short to medium length walks.

dayslikethese1 · 08/06/2021 16:31

I find dresses so comfy and easy to wear. I don't wear flouncy fancy ones though, just casual unless it's to an event. I don't care about pockets really because I would always have my shoulder bag with me or a small backpack if doing something more active (cycling, hiking etc.). I would need this anymore for my water bottle, snacks whatever so no extra hassle due to dress wearing. I wear converse and a ling cardigan or denim jacket with mine to scruff them up a bit (I like to be a bit scruffy!) So much cooler than jeans in the summer.

Crazyunicornlady · 08/06/2021 16:35

I live in dresses, I actually only own one pair of jeans!

dayslikethese1 · 08/06/2021 16:35

Oh and I always do the bending over test when I buy as I want them long enough not to show my underwear (and hold them under light to make sure it's not see through) Very important.

LubaLuca · 08/06/2021 16:45

I wear dresses more than anything else. They're so comfortable and easy, and are flattering on me (I'm short, trousers make me look shorter).

I love my dresses. They are my staple go to, for work and non work time (often different styles) from spring to autumn. You can slip them on (and off) easily, no need to choose a top, and it’s easy to go for a wee.

SwimBaby · 08/06/2021 17:10

Over half my wardrobe is made up with dresses, I feel completely normal in them. I don’t have any jeans. I buy a lot of my dresses from New Look, H&M, Hush and Dorothy Perkins. I’m five feet one and find dresses suit me, last year I got into midi dresses and now love them.

notacooldad · 08/06/2021 17:37

Think how lost you'd feel if someone sewed them all up so you couldn't use them I really wouldn't.
I seriously wouldn't miss them Yes like on my jackets which are thicker than my dresses.
However I don't use the pockets on my day clothes.
Just personal preference. I guess.
I've had a couple if dresses from popsy but requested that they don't have pockets or belt loops. (It's part of their service)

StarlightLady · 08/06/2021 17:48

I don’t do pockets either. Even when wearing jeans, unusual for me this time of year. I don’t put anything in the pockets.

For other things it spoils the line.

Teessider · 08/06/2021 18:13

Lol at biggles. Hmm ok, I'll be sure to check in with my husband later and ensure he's feeling proud Grin

Bought two more dresses so I'm on a roll. They were however from bloody monsoon again so it could be time for me to try stepping outside my (newly found) comfort zone

I got out a dress to wear today. Put on scamp and dude joggers and a t shirt so tomorrow I'll try better

I wear dresses sometimes but mainly for occasions etc
I never, ever use pockets in any of my clothes as it created weird bulges!
I hate seeing that even on other people, like someone wearing jeans with their pockets stuffed full of stuff making them look like they're wearing a nappy under them!

I have dresses from COS, Whistles, Sezane & The Kooples

UniBallEye · 08/06/2021 18:14

Oh and GAP for more casual beach / holiday style

NeverForgetYourDreams · 08/06/2021 18:21

I've just ordered a dress from Popsy to see if like them. Thanks to the person that recommended. And I shall see about the belt loops thing and if I don't like I will ask to be provided without so thanks to that person too. The pockets will be useful for stuffing a face mask in :-)

I wore a dress to work today. But wore Skechers not sandals because when I put the sandals on I felt like was going to party!!
NeverForgetYourDreams · 08/06/2021 18:22

Seasalt have nice dresses. I've got two from them inspired by this thread :-)

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 08/06/2021 18:24

Mountain Warehouse (of all places) do brilliant everyday dresses - they even come with pockets.

jellybeansforbreakfast · 08/06/2021 18:32

Bugger! I had forgotten all about them. Thanks HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime

Teessider · 08/06/2021 19:00

I see so many dresses I like but my requirements are very exacting and it really does knock out a lot of options

No cap sleeves or sleeveless - they must be to the elbow almost or longer

Nothing above the knee

Nothing maxi

Nothing skater style

Nothing synthetic feeling

Nothing too flouncy

Oh and absolutely no tunics or anything draping

You have to ask fir alterations to be done when you order
it's FOC but makes the order non returnable. The dress should be easy to sell on though on the pre loved face book page though.
Its easy to cut the loops off yourself though.
