Named changed as could be outing

My mum has nearly 12000 twitter followers.

I have like 10. She’s got loads of famous people following her too. A lady in her 60s, that’s a head gardener. Kim Wilde, Kerry Katona, and Charlie Dimmock!

How?! Just how?!

I can see why gardeners are popular on Twitter. Lots of lovely photos, perhaps some useful advice, and it makes a pleasant change from the polarisation and shouting associated with many controversial topics. Anyway, I've found and followed your mum!

Whyhello · 04/06/2021 12:32

I used to enjoy Twitter a few years ago and I had about 5k followers including a few minor celebs like Michael Barrymore, Gail Porter, Mark Little. Unsure how or why they started following me, think it was linked to the Wright stuff. It’s easily done on Twitter because most people have a public page so it’s easy to communicate with lots of people if you utilise hashtags in particular.

Brefugee · 04/06/2021 12:48

My mum has nearly 12000 twitter followers.

Cool. Why the shock? Because an agèd old crone is better at Twitter than you? I have a few thousand. My offspring's friends are impressed. Nobody else cares

Brefugee · 04/06/2021 12:56

Goodness me, has everyone.lost their sense of humour? OP was clearly being light-hearted.

Meh. That's what catcallers say "just bantz, innit, love"

But MN is full of the same ol' tedious everyday ageism. But nobody likes it when we point it out.

stackemhigh · 04/06/2021 14:30

@Brefugee would love to follow you. Is yours private?

ExitChasedByABee · 04/06/2021 15:01

@Brefugee I’m confused. How is saying that OP was being lighthearted linked to catcalling and “bantz”? I also don’t understand how the OP was being ageist? Clearly she’s proud of her own mother’s achievements.

lottiegarbanzo · 04/06/2021 15:55

I don't find Brefugee's comments the least bit confusing. Like her, I have read the OP.

Brefugee · 04/06/2021 16:31

Nice try @ExitChasedByABee - several of us have commented that the OP comes across as ageist. Horrified an older lady is a) tech savvy enough to use Twitter and b) blimey old people using social media.

And then saying "don't be offended, you oldies, I was only joking" and I was comparing it to catcallers (as an example) who shout "show us your tits" at female passers by and if they complain they (the catcallers) say "don't you have a sense if humour?" chortle chortle

There is a lot of casual ageism on MN - it's annoying and boring.

Perhaps I should do what I so when people tell me a sexist joke and ask someone to explain the OP?

Brefugee · 04/06/2021 16:33

@stackemhigh - pm me and I'll give you my Twitter handle. (it is very boring...) Grin

Ylfa · 04/06/2021 16:39

@TracyBeakerSoYeah

I'm shocked that Kerry Katona likes gardening. However gardening is very soothing for the mind.
Why is it odd? She has a big garden!
Blossomtoes · 04/06/2021 16:45

There certainly is. I got into a dust up for calling it out on S&B this morning. Half the time they don’t even know they’re doing it although they’d be all over sexism like flies on shit.

vodkaredbullgirl · 04/06/2021 16:47

Fair play to her.

ExitChasedByABee · 04/06/2021 17:03

@Brefugee She was horrified about her mum being on social media or being tech savvy, really? I still don’t think the OP was being ageist against her own mother. I don’t understand what you’re reading.

PinkSnowAndTwinkles · 04/06/2021 17:07

@Brefugee I’m sorry if it came across like that. I didn’t mean to be ageist at all. I’m proud of what she’s achieved in life!

The point I was trying to make (and again, sorry If it came across wrong) was that I find it bizarre because to me, she’s my mum.

Nothing was meant in a bad way.

I guess you've learnt something about how Twitter works OP, from posting here. That's a plus.

I follow her! I know what you mean, my shy sister has a growing creative business and I’m so proud of her, she’s getting big on Instagram. It’s lovely (and so weird), bet you’re so proud of your lovely mum.
ExitChasedByABee · 04/06/2021 17:20

I can see why people would follow such accounts on Twitter. It can be very relaxing about not having to consider how one’s words are coming are across, just appreciating the beauty of nature and sharing lovely pictures.

C8H10N4O2 · 04/06/2021 17:54

I’m proud of my mum, but I find the situation odd

Prepare yourself for a shock OP - she also discovered sex before you were even born.

Brefugee · 04/06/2021 18:07

So maybe, since à few of us felt it, people might try being a bit less agist going forward? Grin

MareofBeasttown · 04/06/2021 18:29

If you are ever curious about how Twitter works, OP, this is exactly how it works:)

stackemhigh · 04/06/2021 19:01

Will do @Brefugee 😃

PinkSnowAndTwinkles · 04/06/2021 19:10

@Brefugee - taken on board!

If anyone is interested in what they can do to help hedgehogs 🦔 I thoroughly recommend @hedgehogcabin on Twitter. She now has over 16k followers 🦔😀

ExitChasedByABee · 04/06/2021 20:05

@Sadsiblingatsea Whenever I think of hedgehogs, it just reminds me of the hedgehog cartoons we used to be shown in primary school to cross roads safely Grin
