Named changed as could be outing

My mum has nearly 12000 twitter followers.

I have like 10. She’s got loads of famous people following her too. A lady in her 60s, that’s a head gardener. Kim Wilde, Kerry Katona, and Charlie Dimmock!

How?! Just how?!

OP posts:

Waterperry gardens are lovely. Always used to enjoy a wander during Art in Action (which I dearly miss).

augustusglupe · 04/06/2021 01:01

I've found her on Instagram I think. Beautiful pictures!

Lucifersladylove · 04/06/2021 01:02

Oh this place sometimes!
I know what OP means, when someone you know gains a lot of public attention or becomes famous it can feel weird.
One of my best friends is a well known actor and it always weirds me out when I see him on tv/films because to me he’s that lad who I first bonded with over a love for a certain band at school. Now he’s friends with that band.

Op isn’t saying her mum is not worthy or interesting.

exactly this! Op clearly loves her mum and has not said that she is not worthy. I think most of us would be surprised if our family member (of any age) suddenly became a social media hit. It takes some getting used to. I don't think op is suggesting in any way that older women shouldn't be out there gaining followers and doing their thing.
HesterLee · 04/06/2021 01:07

Kim Wilde is very into gardening. I met her at a gardening thing once and she was lovely.

Thing is 12k followers isn't reallly that many to be causing a stir. I know people with 40k, I have 100k on a different platform and it's just all meaningless numbers... no one would know me from Adam IRL
OldWomanSaysThis · 04/06/2021 01:47

I use Twitter has a curated news feed - the "news" being whatever I am interesting in - funny things, breaking news, weather, book publishers - so I never tweet out, just follow accounts. If I liked gardening, I would follow your Mother.

I think a lot of folks see it as a place to tweet out and have followers, but plenty of people are just readers, like me. I don't have followers.

Susannahmoody · 04/06/2021 01:58

Waterperry looks fabulous

ExitChasedByABee · 04/06/2021 02:02

@PinkSnowAndTwinkles

She’s tweeting pictures of plants and gardens
@PinkSnowAndTwinklesI think your mum is very talented Flowers I am not sure why some of the posters aren’t getting the lighthearted nature of your posts. I can see why it feels so bizarre Xmas Smile
ExitChasedByABee · 04/06/2021 02:03

Imagine your mum having even more followers because of this thread Easter Smile

CatAndHisKit · 04/06/2021 02:11

10 followers is minging, OP. ANYONE can get more on twitter. Grin

But yeah she'd doing well! I follow two gardeners, mostly one for plants / trees and the other for the great garden birds photos - it's something you want to see during srtessful times, her photos must be great. And indeed many gardenerrs follow each other, so not that surprising.

Lucifersladylove · 04/06/2021 02:42

@itsnotnormalisit 12k people is a lot of people. I’m not suggesting the OPs mum is famous or anything, but it’s a lot of people.

Redsquirrel5 · 04/06/2021 03:10

I get it.
My kids would be 😳if I had followers on something like twitter.

Kim Wilde is a very keen gardener. I met her at a garden event and bought her book which she kindly signed for me. She was lovely.

Good luck to her.

maddiemookins16mum · 04/06/2021 03:46

Kim Wilde loves gardening, has for yonks.

DavidTheDog · 04/06/2021 05:05

I am struggling to get where you are coming from. It also feels a bit off to me too.

Helenahandbasket1 · 04/06/2021 05:13

I follow your mum on Instagram Grin She has an enviable job and posts lots of lovely photos so I’m not surprised people are interested.

OhYouDontSay · 04/06/2021 05:14

@lottiegarbanzo

Just a gardener, just your mum...

You're just the less well-connected daughter of a knowledgeable head gardener, who knows what she's talking about and shares her knowledge on social media.

OP is obviously being light hearted jeez.

My Dad played sports professionally when I was young. A couple of people have asked for his autograph before, I found that really weird because to me he was 'just Dad'. It's not an insult 🙄

lljkk · 04/06/2021 05:24

#LightHearted gals, once upon a time MN did #LightHearted by default.

Twitter has many sub-communities of friendly supportive people. I never expected that either until I was on Twitter a long time. Neat that OP's mum is part of that.

I am astounded that I've got followers on Twitter, too. Like 250 not 12k, I'm sure I'm disappointing to them all.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 04/06/2021 05:38

@Musication

haha I get it op. I would probably be surprised if my mum in her sixties became a social media hit, followed by celebrities! Good on her of course - I can see that you love your mum and I get the element of surprise in this situation. :-)
Yes, I agree with @Musication. I'm in my sixties and I completely understand how you might feel like that, OP!
ApolloandDaphne · 04/06/2021 06:20

My DDs are in their 20s and they don't use Twitter. I am late 50s and I love it but Instagram baffles me. I guess there is a platform for everyone! I am now following your mum OP. I love a good garden!

HalleLouja · 04/06/2021 06:22

My mum got over a million views on TikTok. That was a bit mental.

EveningOverRooftops · 04/06/2021 06:28

I guess your mum posts the kind of wholesome content everyone wants to pop up in their feed between the shite, the politics and the nastiness.

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 04/06/2021 06:32

Not at all the same thing but reminds me of the conversation I had with my DM when I was around 19.

I came home from work and she wasnt home, i messaged her asking "erm where are you??" she replied out why? I then asked what do you mean out? Where are you??? DM then told me she did have her own life and that she doesn't have to be home all the time, just for me. I had my keys, I was rather shocked. She had her own little life outside of being my DM who is always home to greet me 😂

I just checked my twitter after a couple of years not being on it, everyone has unfollowed me, how sad.

MarshaBradyo · 04/06/2021 06:40

Hasn’t heard if the gardens but they look pretty

It’s not odd for her to have these followers given her job

MarshaBradyo · 04/06/2021 06:41

Hadn’t..
