To think this is why people’s ideas of portion sizes is messed up.

Watch any diet/healthy eating show and they talk a lot about portion size. I had an M&S butter chicken curry tonight. It costs £4 and comes in what people would commonly believe is a single potion size. I do actually only eat half at a time, mainly because I have it with naan bread, but can easily see why someone would eat one on its own. Yet look on the back and it says, in small print, “portions 2”.

DS has been eating a lot of tinned soup lately rather than more calorific lunches as he is trying to lose weight. But again look on the back and 1 tin is apparently 2 portions. So why don’t they sell it in half tin sizes? You get half tins of beans, spaghetti etc so why not soup.

Many, many other foods are sold in portions of 2, sometimes even 3 or 4. But it’s not clear unless you go looking for it.

If we want to tackle the obesity crisis then why doesn’t it say in big letters on the front “x amount of portions” rather than bury it in small print on the back? Yes you could argue that people should look and inform themselves but realistically, until a person is already overweight, most won’t bother.

While I don’t disagree that people need to take personal responsibility I do think that the way things are packaged and sold has had an influence and that highlighting to people what a single portion is could go some way to making a difference.

It's not hidden on the back in the small print. It's right on the front, first thing at the top of the nutritional breakdown.

I’m sorry if I’ve offended you but yes I have put up with my mums eating disorder, whatever you want to call it, for years. Including being malnourished as a child because of it. If I am misinformed it is because I don’t want to know anymore about it. I’ve had enough of it.

For that reason no I don’t have issues myself. There’s no “mock horror: about my thread. I am genuinely surprised that such a small amount is considered one portion.

They used to sell the 400g ones which are marked as 2 portions and 280g iir which was marked as 1 portion.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/06/2021 21:05

Sorry. Missed "tinned soup" that's what i meant

3AndStopping · 03/06/2021 21:06

I don’t think people are this stupid. I can just look at the packaging/portion and think ‘that’s for 1 person’ or ‘that’s for 2 people.’ Doesn’t mean I always follow the advice Grin

ShirleyPhallus · 03/06/2021 21:07

People eating processed crap won’t be healthy, no matter what the portion size is

PurpleDaisies · 03/06/2021 21:08

@Meruem

God that’s true re the pizza. I eat a frozen pizza to myself with extra mozarella that I add. My mum (a wannabe anorexic, she tries but loves eating!) still insists that a pizza that size serves 4!
Nobody wants to be anorexic. Nobody. You know it’s the most deadly psychiatric disorder?
someonesomewhere1 · 03/06/2021 21:09

Erm... it's very obvious it's a portion for 2 people, no? Confused

😴

PurpleDaisies · 03/06/2021 21:11

Whether someone eating processed crap is healthy or not depends on what proportion of their diet it makes up.

EmphaticPeriod · 03/06/2021 21:13

That is interesting to me OP cos I have bought the butter chicken twice recently and shared it with my DD as the naans came in packs of two.
I would not have thought twice about eating the lot on my own as I thought it was a single portion and I was just being nice Blush

Meruem · 03/06/2021 21:15

I’m not going to ask for that comment to be deleted because as I say, it’s been my reality with my mum and I stand by it. Even if it was said in a flippant way. But then I learnt to be flippant about it long ago as a way of dealing with it.

If someone else wants to report it and it’s against guidelines then fair enough. I accept that. I certainly did not set out to offend anyone by saying it.

But plenty of people have read it by now and I won’t try to make myself look better by asking for it to be deleted. People can judge as they see fit. Again, apologies for any offence caused, it was not my intention.

Butter chicken is not a good choice for dieting in the first place but yes, the ones that come without rice are for two people.

Sometimes the portions are dictated not by the calorie content, but to stay under guidelines for fat and salt etc, to make it appear more healthy.

That's the deal with the soup, there is no way that an average can of soup is sufficient for 2 adults without adding in extra bread etc which is worse probably than just eating a whole can.

I find some things clearer than others but to be honest I tend to cook more things from scratch and work out the calorie content myself and that also helps with potion size.

MiddleParking · 03/06/2021 21:15

It’s universally accepted that ‘serves 2’ is a fun joke they put to help you enjoy it more as you eat the whole thing stood up at the kitchen counter. Duh.

lazylinguist · 03/06/2021 21:15

Ready meals are going to have smaller portions because they are often massively unhealthy and calorific. If they sold them with more realistic portion sizes, the salt and fat content would look horrific! Conclusion: don't eat ready meals.

Famousinlove · 03/06/2021 21:16

I think a lot of them are 1 portion on its own or 2 portions inc sides?

Sparklfairy · 03/06/2021 21:16

It annoys me when I get a meal deal for lunch. Sandwich, crisps and a bottle of coke/pepsi whatever. The drink says half a bottle is a 'portion'. Well obviously I'm going to drink all 500ml, especially before it goes flat and it was bought in my lunch meal deal!

My friend started logging all his food on MFP and couldn't work out why he didn't lose weight. It wasn't until he logged his bottle of lucozade as '1' that I pointed out he'd actually drunk '2' according to the app. He'd buy a packet of biscuits and scan them as '1' portion too and eat the whole lot Grin

MargaretThursday · 03/06/2021 21:16

@RaspberryCoulis

OMG you eat HALF a butter chicken with naan? OMG all those CARBS. If I ate that much, I wouldn't need to eat again until Halloween. A slice of cucumber at breakfast and i'm STUFFED for the day.

Do love a competitive under eating thread.

I was going to say that a strand of spaghetti and a piece of celery fills me up for 24 hours easily, but I see you're beating me so I will go away and sulk. Wink
SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/06/2021 21:16

The worst for portions is a microwave rice! Not really 2, but too much for 1🙄

PurpleDaisies · 03/06/2021 21:17

Apparently bachelors pasta n sauce (my extremely guilty pleasure) serves 2.

TheLastLotus · 03/06/2021 21:17

So the actual AIBU is that ‘the food industry has messed with people’s idea of portion size?’
YANBU.
Mainly because there’s no such thing as a one size fits all portion size!
Men need more calories than women. Some people have higher metabolism, more daily activity etc.

Surely you KNOW how much you eat and manage accordingly? Do people actually look at the pack and go ‘oh it’s a single serving that’s one portion’ and lap it all up? We have fridges and food containers for a reason ...

PurpleDaisies · 03/06/2021 21:18

Conclusion: don't eat ready meals.

Conclusion: don't eat ready meals often.

Kissthepastrychef · 03/06/2021 21:18

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

They reduce the portion size so the ratios of salts/fats/carbs can be that pretty shade of green (or if needs be the cheery orange) on the wrapper. Not because some dietitian has decided that X ounces of butter chicken is the right portion for All Humans.
This with knobs on.
Happyschool · 03/06/2021 21:18

I find it quite puzzling judging portions from a packet. We just eat plain stuff we cook at home like eggs, meat , veg, pasta etc and never measure anything , in fact I struggle to keep weight on us. It’s worth watching the tv programme What are we feeding our Kids?

PurpleDaisies · 03/06/2021 21:19

Yes! Totally agree. It’s a nuisance.
